EPISODE NUMBER: 5133 (October 14, 2009)
GUESTS: Amy Farrell, The RZA
SEGMENTS: Yahweh or No Way
VIDEOS: Wednesday, October 14, 2009
Even though I’m a born and bred Texan, and lived my entire adult life here in God’s country, I’ve never been a fan of boots. But I have to say, the boots that Stephen was wearing last night were quite spectacular.
I was also looking forward to the interview with Amy Farrell. It’s no secret that “Stephen” has made no bones about his fear of being fat. So every time a guest comes on that is going to discuss that issue, that comes to the forefront. I thought it was interesting that they put the side-by-side pictures of Stephen up to show how much Stephen has changed. I do miss that glorious mane of hair (it’s coming back, slowly but surely), but yeah, he does seem to have changed a bit. But I don’t think he’s gotten “fat” by any stretch of the word. Speaking as one of the 67% of Americans who are overweight or obese, he is so far from being “fat” it is not even funny. I am quite grateful, though, that no one puts four-year old pictures of me up on national television and compares them to how I look now.
There’s just something about Stephen dancing to Cher that warms the cockles of my heart. But Stephen dancing to Cher with his rapture helmet on? Divine!
Was anyone else as confused about The RZA as I was? I kept waiting for something to make sense, but it never did. Mathematical truth? I’m sorry, what’s happening? The two of them were so on different planes, and yet they managed to be able to have a conversation. Sort of. And RZA did manage to blow Stephen’s mind, so that’s always a good thing.
What did you all take away from the episode tonight?

- I have 300 words for [Sen. Olympia] Snowe, and I can’t say one of them on TV.
- You see, folks, we’re on a runaway stagecoach of government, being chased by the coyotes of increased deficits, and heading right into an ambush of the Comanche in Chief and his Hope Hopis. And unless the Marshall of fiscal responsibility arrives on the noon train of free market principals to drive these saloon girls of new taxes out, the pickup truck of high premiums will get eaten by the death panel prairie dogs and the boot hill tumbleweed sarsaparilla varmint six-shooter cattle rustlin’, do you think you use enough dynamite there for a fistful of dollars, Yaaw! … Ma’am.
- Among Ensign’s weight loss tips – boning your top aid’s wife. It really works the glutes.
- Here, piggy, piggy … said society.
- Oh, they can’t use the same seat as everyone else. You know who that reminds me of? Rosa Parks. Oh, she’s thin? Then why couldn’t she sit at the front?
- I’m sorry, but our bodies are the only grown industry we have left.
- The word “obese” is fatter than the word Fat, isn’t that more descriptive?
- What’s wrong with that? I watch MTV’s Pimp My God. I think he’d look totally awesome with some flames and ground effects.
- Because even God is sick of Uncle Jerry bitching about the bar and the sofa bed sticking into his back. You’re lucky you’re not sleeping in the garage, Jerry!
- Either that, or Jesus used a full-body Biore strip. 40 days in the desert is hell on your pores.
- Unless Cher with a mustache is the second coming of Christ.
Where can I buy a rapture helmet?? I want it to be as easy as possible for God to lift me up and the handle, I believe, will definitely help.
Here’s hoping they cap off the week with a totes massive show!

The Rapture helmet made me LOL so hard.
I thought the before and after picture thing was a joke–didn’t he look exactly the same?
That amendment makes me worried. I don’t mind the principle of paying extra for being overweight, but it will lead to job discrimination if hiring a fat person will cost the company extra money.

No, he didn’t look exactly the same. However, he still looks good and is not “fat”. And I agree that the proposed amendment could open the door to job discrimination. And overweight and obese people are already discriminated against as it is.

I’ll have to watch it again–those particular two pix looked basically identical to me. Hm.
HAHAHA–my recaptcha is myopia Hardart–myopia indeed!

I wouldn’t say it was a very big difference and, personally, I think he looks better now.

The helmet with the handle on it made me laugh SO hard.

I don’t think Stephen has gotten fatter since the show started. But I think he’s bulked up, meaning he is working out or something. I do notice that he is obsessed with the buttoning & unbuttoning of his jacket, though. I too would like to know where I can get a rapture helmet. I do miss that segment. The RZA is just…The RZA. I don’t think he’s out to make any deep intellectual points. I might get shouted down for my generalization of rappers. Good show. Hope that tonight’s is a great one to hold me over. How long will we be on a Colbert fast?

DB, you make a very good point on the “fat” issue. If Stephen is 5-10, and that’s what I’ve always read, I really doubt he is even technically overweight. FWIW I do think he looks a little thinner than when I started watching back in December. However, I agree that the obsession is exaggerated by “Stephen” and his ego. He tipped it off by saying to the guest “I’m fat, you’re fat…” when she doesn’t look fat either. I didn’t really agree with her point about eliminating overweight/obese though, certainly it’s better to be only 10 pounds over than a lot more in terms of health? But there is bound to be discrimination and it’s a point worth making.
I actually liked the RZA interview, though I agree it was a little cryptic at times. The one plus one being two – or eleven – or two – was the best part.
I loved it that Stephen kept the boots on all night.

i can see the different in stephen from the earlier shows and the more recent ones, and i have to say that i much prefer how stephen looks now as a ‘fat’ person. he looks much more jollier and he has a kind of glow to him. :) although that might just be in changes to the show as well.

In the earlier shows he sometimes looked sort of pale and wan and drawn to me. Sickly. Now he looks healthy and delicious.

The hat and boots and cowboy talk made me laugh but the rapture helmet made me laugh really hard! The interview with Amy Farrell was interesting. I’m someone who lost 30 pounds 2 years ago and still struggles a bit to keep it off. Did Ralph Lauren *really* say that model was fat?! *eyeroll* I intensely dislike our cultural views on weight! I have to admit that I was starting to fall asleep by the time The RZA came on so I really don’t recall anything from the interview. I’ll have to try to watch it online today if I get a chance.

The notion that that model was “fat” was incredible. If Ralph Lauren wants to display his designs on models as thin as coat hangers, surely he should use actual coat hangers instead.

Evidently, yes. According to the reports, she was fired in April because they said she could no longer fulfill her contractal obligations, including fitting into RL’s sample clothes.
I’ll hang a big ol’ Whiskey-Tango-Foxtrot on that one.

RL thought a 5’11″ 115 lbs. woman was fat?! Sheesh! Incredible. No wonder women and young girls have such a distorted image of beauty. *shakes head sadly*

I loved the line about RL putting clothes on Pez dispensers instead of women! Being healthy and in good physical shape is not scale/pounds related. Muscle weighs more than fat and someone with good muscle tone would have to weigh more than a too low 120 lbs at 5’10″, it’s absurd.
p.s. Stephen looks great in a cowboy hat.

Just a different perspective on the before/after pictures, which is something I’ve noticed on many people I know: People’s faces often change in their 40′s, independent of weight. For instance, my husband hasn’t gained a pound since we were 22 years old, and he looked exactly the same for about 15 years. But at 39, his face has started to broaden, his chin’s becoming less pointy, more square, etc. Very much the same changes you see in Stephen’s face comparing now to TDS years. All of which I find really interesting – just like laugh lines, people get better as they get older :)

Stephen looks softer now than he did when he first started the show. I loved his boots, I didn’t think that he would wear it up until the end. I loved his face when he was dancing to Cher’s music and accented by that light!
reCAPTCHA: 10022 garments — I’m guessing that’s how many suits/costumes Stephen has worn since he started the show

best show of the week.
anyone notice that thursday’s show has been best of the week for a few weeks now? maybe just a my personal take…

I loved those cowboy boots.
The rapture helmet was completely awesome. I showed the pic of Stephen wearing the helmet to my neighbor in the next cubicle at work (a total it-getter as well as a fan of rapture humor), and that led to an entertaining discussion of post-rapture pet care. Hilarity ensued.
Speaking as someone who’s been a fat person for essentially my whole life, we absolutely do get treated differently, and we do get discriminated against. Stephen is definitely not fat. I think he has filled out a little bit as he’s gotten older, and his face has changed and become a little softer (for lack of a better word). I actually prefer how he looks now. He’s only gotten better as he’s gotten older.

1. I didn’t know what the heck The RZA was talking about.
2. Stephen is like wine…he gets better with age.

While I didn’t understand what The RZA was talking about, I still liked the interview, if only for Stephen’s side of it ha :).
And I agree so hard with #2!

Holy wonderful, those cowboy boots were fantastic! His “southern twang” accent was quite adorable as well. :)
I did love his interview with Amy Farrell, and I thought she made some great points on an issue that I am very much interested in.
But actually, my favorite part of the show was at the beginning when Stephen mentioned Olympia Snowe and the health care bill, simply for the line: “I have 300 words for Snowe, and I can’t say one of them on TV.” Right when I heard him say that, I immediately thought back to his message to the Fjords and realized – he CAN say one of those words, as long as he puts a ‘j’ in it! HA! :)

LOVE the rapture helmet, and I think maybe the show should always have those rapture lights on!
