Those of you keeping tabs on these things have probably noticed that tonight’s guest is Arne Duncan, the Secretary of Education. Well, here’s one that should be right up the alley of our readers in the education biz (or anyone with an interest), from This Week in Education:
TV: Colbert Report Needs Questions For Duncan Interview Tonight
October 5, 2009 | Posted At: 09:10 AM | Author: Alexander Russo | Category: On Maryland AvenueWriters from the staff of The Colbert Report have contacted me asking for help with tonight’s interview with Education Secretary, Arne Duncan. They need questions and jokes for Colbert to ask. I’ve only got a couple. Can you help out?
. . .
Unfortunately, the only thing that I can think of relates to a certain tragic occurrence that’s been in the news lately; I’d like to know whether and to what extent Sec. Duncan works with other governmental departments (state and federal) to address issues of student safety — both at school and traveling to and from classes — which have to be on the minds of a lot of families that live in more troubled neighborhoods. That doesn’t seem a very good topic for The Colbert Report, though, so maybe some of our readers could add suggestions (doing so over on the linked post would be a good idea).

The State Board of Education, in Texas, a state that ranks near the bottom in education, they’re fighting over whether they should list Easter AND Christmas as examples of Christian holidays, in our Social Studies textbooks. Can this really be THE most important agenda item? An example of might being right (sadly) is that as goes TX’s schoolbooks, so goes the country’s.

I posted this question/joke:
What’s the difference between education and training? Do our kids need to be educated to serve the rich and powerful? Why can’t we just train them like the betas in “Brave New World”?

Obama’s proposed extending the school day past 3 PM; having classes on Saturday; having classes 12 months/year…
Pros and cons? Does she agree? Can’t think of a joke for this – just something I wonder about

Guess I’m a little late to post a question (long day, plus a faculty meeting with the superintendent & union), but I’ll enjoy the show. I enjoyed your question, vigwig; hope Stephen asks it!

Thanks juice! If it’s used I’ll be THRILLED!
Seriously, I’ve always been frustrated that a broad education is seen by many as subservient to training for corporate America.
