I’m sure those of you who weren’t lucky enough to snag tickets to the Benefit for Two River Theater Company at the Count Basie Theatre are wishing there was a way you could participate in this event. Well, friend of the blog Courtney Perez from the Two River Theater Company wanted me to share an opportunity to ask a question of Stephen himself!
Courtney says, “Do you have any questions you would like Stephen Colbert to answer personally? You may be in luck! On November 1, Aaron Posner, Artistic Director of Two River Theater Company in Red Bank, NJ will be conducting a live interview with the out-of-character Stephen Colbert. We are looking for some input on what questions our Colbert fans would like answered.” I’ve been doing this blog for over three years now and an opportunity like this to get a question to Stephen out-of-character is VERY few and VERY far between.
All you have to do is become a fan of the Two Rivers Theater Company Facebook page, and ask the question in their comments thread. Only the questions that are submitted via the Facebook page will be considered.
Make sure to let them know that you’re a Zoner! And in the comments here, give a shout-out if you’re going to the show. (You can share your question here, too, but only the ones submitted on the Facebook page will be considered for the Q&A with Stephen).
Snagged tickets for this show back in August, and I absolutely cannot wait! I’m down to 30 days!! Gah! I truthfully don’t know what to do with myself.
As far as any question I would ask him, I have a comment and a question that I plan on asking him at the show. I want to thank him for his coverage in Iraq, because I learned more about the Iraq War in the 4 days that he was there than the entire 6 years on the news networks. I really appreciate him for that.
And my question was going to be either: How hard is it for you to stay in character when a guest says or does something that personally offends you or does something absolutely absurd (like when Richard Branson threw water on him haha), -OR- I just recently read Wigfield, and was wondering how much of Russell Hokes is in the character he created for TCR, because I can definitely see a lot of similarities.

Oooh, a really good question about Russell Hoakes! I’ve thought the same, there are certain similarities between the Colbert character and Hoakes.

One thing I’ve always been curious about is if there are certain situations (e.g. family gatherings) where Stephen goes full-on South Carolina accent. I had a friend from Belgium that spoke like 5 different languages and he would actually switch accents (still speaking English though) depending on the group of people he was talking to. It’s an interesting phenomenon and I would think that Stephen would be a possible candidate for that.

Colbert has stated that when he was a young kid, he intentionally avoided having any southern accent because he always saw that the accent was unfairly associated with stupidity.
I’m sure he can do the southern draw, but I would feel certain that he never slips into that when around his fam.

yeah that’s fair, but if you remember, when stephen was running for president and going around meeting people in SC, in the youtube video he sorta slipped into the SC accent just a tad.

Heh.. I musta not realized it…i’ve been in florida for quite some time so it is very possible I didn’t hear his slip =p

Oh, I like that question! I wonder if there are moments when he just slips into the accent. Very good idea – submit it! :)

I’ve been marking the days off on my calendar since I bought my ticket! My question relates to what I call his “charitable spirit”. Is it something that was instilled in him since childhood? I know his Dad was a doctor, but was charity work encouraged in the household? Is it rooted in his Catholic faith? So, off to Facebook!

Good question! I’ve wondered that, too. Hope it gets picked. :-)

I have a lot of questions and no access to facebook (The Chinese governnment is afraid I will use if for subversive activities, when, in fact, all I want is the latest scoop on the Letterman scandal). Maybe some of you know some of the answers:1) Have any of his kids’ teachers seen Strangers With Candy? If so, does it make parent-teacher interviews awkward? 2) Is he worried that it is going to be difficult to keep his kids on the straight and narrow as they get older, find out about his pot-smoking teenaged years and start understanding the sexual references on his shows? 3) Does his wife ever get fed up with all the female attention he gets? 4)Does he ever miss anything about the touring company from Second City, or is life much better now? 5) Was that colonoscopy bit real? 6) Whom does he consider to have been the most difficult guest on his show (besides cookie monster)? 7) Is it easier to “nail” liberals or conservatives in character? I would also like to thank him for his willingness to discuss his faith in public, but I guess that’s not really a question.

Love your 1st question! I’m a teacher, btw

I got premium tickets the day they went on sale. O_o If this actually results in getting the chance to talk to him in person, and if I don’t literally pass out (I’m genuinely concerned about the possibility), I just wanna ask if he happens to remember the crazy blue and green haired girl who tried to ask him a question at a taping in May and ended up stuttering nonsense instead. >_> Cause yeah, that was totally me.

I’m going to my first taping next Thursday and am totally afraid the same thing will happen to me. I wimped out on asking Jon Stewart a question during when I went to a TDS taping last year. But I bet you weren’t the first person to do so (maybe the first with blue/green hair though)!
Have fun at the show!

I’m sure I would be completely tongue tied as well. Have a great time!

ooh, I got premium tickets too! do you think picture-taking will be allowed at the reception?
I can’t think of any questions right now, other than ‘Can I hug you?’

I’m going, I became a Two Rivers Fan, & I have so many questions floating around in my head I can’t focus on a single one! Maybe something about his Sunday School teaching. IDK, IDK!

Ooo! A question about his Sunday School teaching would be so great! I’ve always wanted to know more about that. :)

Ok, I became a fan, but now where exactly is this comment thread that I’m supposed to ask my question in? Do they mean on the wall? But no one else has written on their wall…Help please =[

On the wall of the Two River Theater Company facebook fanpage is a post reading: What do you want to know about Stephen Colbert? Post your question and it might be used in Aaron Posner’s interview with Colbert on Nov. 1!
There are now 5 questions posted. Please post yours as well!
Here is the link..

Hi guys i’m new to this site and I think you are doing a fanatastic job… so many interesting articles and videos – that one with Stephen reading to the children is priceless… I had a couple of questions – I hope they aren’t too weird…
Ok…
First I was hoping he would give us just a sampling of what his Sunday school class might be like…next
when I was watching the video of him speaking at Harvard he did a quick and beautiful Hungarian accent and I thought, jeez, we’re only getting the tip of the iceberg here, he is so talented and brilliant, The Colbert Nation is a great gig but maybe someday he’s feeling he no longer wants to portray all events through that characters’ eyes and do a completely different something or other in a movie or something, is that going to be like stopping a train and trap him in a George Reeves/Superman like snare where he is so typecast he can’t be seen as a different character… my guess he wouldn’t even worry about that and just do whatever works for him – …I think it helps that he is now showing himself as more than that character – showing his wonderful nature as a father and generous friend – like the race for breast cancer he recently did along with his friend that had been stricken with breast cancer…
Also, it must be kind of interesting to be thinking in character more hours than you can just be yourself – especially since the lines are not so cleanly drawn – parts of him in his character and vice versa…. He certainly keeps you guessing…I wonder if sometimes he looks at something new and reacts FIRST as his character and then as himnself – I suppose it must feel like you are just riding a wave of the character – sorry I’m writing a novel here…Are these questions goofy or should I try them at the Two River theater thing? I’m going to the Two river gig and the next day to the Colbert Report! What could be better?
