Jon Stewart questions Pres. Obama’s putting Iran “On Notice”

Did you all watch The Daily Show last night? I certainly hope so. In the midst of the coverage about the G20 (and lots of puns about the Iranian city of Qum), Jon made this little comment about the President’s position on Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s nuclear plant:

Pres. Obama: So, I think Iran is on notice …
Jon: “On notice”? Really? We’re giving a crazy guy with nukes the same warning Colbert gives bears?

Hee! I love it when there’s crossover between my favorite shows.

Watch the clip below. The exchange in question comes just after the five-minute mark (but there’s no reason not to watch the whole segment).

That was hilarious segment. And I truly loved the cross-over. Also, yes, Jon. You have much to atone for, but don’t atone for making me laugh out loud.

That was brilliant! Jon was having way too much fun with the name of that town. But the Colbert joke was absolute gold.

I also loved Jon’s reaction to Stephen’s picture on the screen. Hee.

  5. Michele says:

As soon as he showed that clip of Obama saying Iran was on notice I knew he was going to make a joke about it referencing Stephen. I laughed so hard at that! I wonder if Stephen is going to say something about it this week.

    I’m really disappointed in Jon…
I was saddened when he went on his show on the holiest day of the Jewish year, and then joked about his baconnaise breakfast–even if he wasn’t serious, I think it sent a message…
maybe I am being too sensitive about all of this, but I just wish he could have done things differently.
you know, like sandy koufax and art shamsky, who were not observant Jews, they still refused to play on yom kippur, with a lot on the line, to make a statement that resonated; jewish pride. if only jon could have done the same! oh well, maybe next year he will do things differently.

Not being a particularly religious person, myself, I can understand if Jon, who has never claimed to be at all observant, chooses not to make the public gesture.

I think it’s lovely when truly devout people choose to act in accordance with their beliefs (or refrain from acting, in your example), but I don’t think Jon has ever accepted any responsibility as a spokesperson for Jewish pride. I like that he doesn’t level spurious attacks, but I don’t think he owes it to anyone to do more.

I think his making a religious gesture based on anything other than personal faith/inclination would be empty and insincere. And, frankly, if he wasn’t moved to change the format of his show on his own, I like that he proceeded as he did.

Hahaha!! As soon as I saw that clip of Obama saying that Iran was on notice, I thought of Stephen! I love that Jon made the connection too and said it on the show! =D

While I understand what you are saying, and while granted, Jon is a private citizen, he is also a public personality with a very public, popular Television program. As such, society sort of holds him to a different standard. Therefore, his actions reverberate more so than other private citizens. Obviously, he chose not to, and ultimately, it is his personal decision. All I’m saying is his personal decisions can sway many many people.

Yes, they can, but that’s true of everything he does. There were people during the campaign asking why Jon (and Stephen) didn’t campaign for the Democrats; the obvious answer was that he did not want to use his celebrity to directly act in that manner (and anyway, I doubt he’d have voted the party line, so to speak). I don’t see why choosing whether to be active on a matter as personal as religion should be any different.

Any public figure chooses what he or she “endorses”, either in word or action, and we don’t always agree with those choices. But the decision to affirmatively become a role model is obviously theirs to make, we can only react.

You obviously wish Jon had acted differently, which is understandable. For myself, I think it would be fine to act differently if he felt differently; otherwise, I’m glad he chose not to pretend something he didn’t feel.

Jon, you win forever for your reaction to Stephen’s picture.

  10. I lost it when Jon said that. LOL! My mom shot me a strange look and then wondered why my favorite late-night fake newsmen were transferred to prime time.

I LOVED it when Jon mentioned Stephen. When Obama said ‘On Notice’, I yelled at the TV, “Mention Stephen!” and annoyed my brother, totally worth it though because Jon did. That was a highlight for me, so was Jon’s reaction to Stephen’s picture. The whole segement was really awesome.
