Thoughts on the show: The post-Emmy post

Well, kids, another Emmy year has come and gone. This time, Stephen did lose to the guy with claws for hands (and no offense to Hugh Jackman, but I really was rooting for “Much Worse Things”). We never like to see Stephen and his team go home empty-handed, but we’re genuinely happy for Jon and The Daily Show crew. To wrap things up, here are a few more pics from the evening:

Commentator extraordinaire -- John Hodgman!

Ricky and Jon - Emmys 2009

Jon and Stephen - Bromance at the Emmys 2009

Multiple winner Jon Stewart -- Emmys 2009

Congratulations to Jon and his “ninety writers”! I’m looking forward to seeing what they all say when the shows come back tomorrow night. Jon did a little interview with Access Hollywood after the ceremony, discussing the win and the Emmy “fort” he’s building. I can’t embed it, but you can watch it here.

What did all of you think about the telecast? Did you enjoy the host? I was highly amused by the Dr. Horrible appearance; what was your favorite part? I’m sure we’ll all be picking out our high and lowlights until next year’s show, so have at it in the comments.

my favorite part was The Daily Show winning (not because TCR lost, but because I like TDS) and the Dr. Horrible part! I love Dr Horrible and seeing it come on as a type of inside joke made me so pleased. it was really funny, because I HATE BUFFERING and all that stuff– when I watch TDS/TCR on Hulu in my room, I can’t watch on full screen and about five minutes into the first segment, I always have to stop for a while while the rest of the video loads. but anyway.
as I said, I was also really pleased about The Daily Show. they had a very exciting year, what with the election, and I really enjoyed watching it all!
also, John Hodgman’s announcing was great! I was so surprised to hear it at first, but it worked well and I kind of looked forward to them. though I can’t help but wonder what would have been announced if TCR/Stephen won in any of the categories they were up for.

I agree, my favorite part hands down was Dr. Horrible, I flipped out in the room. No one knew what was going on, they just knew I was spazzing out. It happens when your an internet fiend.

I’ll be in the audience for the first post-emmy show and I’m sure someone (or me) is going to ask about it.
The mind boggles at how Colbert Christmas was snubbed.

Ooooh! Have fun! And it’s nice to “see” you back around, Harper. I’m “votequimby” over at the CN board although I haven’t been there much for the past few months.

I’d like to see a video of Jon’s acceptance speech!

That TCR didn’t win at least one it’s odd. It feels like a step back, but at least it’s TDS they lost against. Maybe Stephen should have bring his daughter again, she brought him luck last year.

  4. SusieBlack says:

I still am having trouble believing that the Academy won an Emmy.

At least one truly worthy rival won, TDS, and I am happy for them. Maybe part of their success was due to Jon’s killer interviews, especially of Jim Cramer.

Like Nukaleu tweeted: (Operation Iraqi Stephen) is going to kick some serious late night butt next year!!!

    • mrtigger001 says:

Hear hear. And with segments like “The Word – Neutral Man’s Burden,” and the DADT Formidable Opponent during the Iraq shows, TCR is coming back with a vengeance for sure.

Did they have another funny writer’s montage for the comedy nominees? I loved those.

Yes- but I haven’t found it on YouTube just yet! Colbert’s writers were introduced and then the shot panned out to show them standing near the “Late Show w/David Letterman” marquee. Stephen ran out, yelled “Hey!” and pointed out the marquee while his staff ran away. He then stood and waved at the camera. I hope someone will post it! Those segments are one of my favorite parts of the telecast.

I thought it was a good show, but part of me thought something was definitely missing without having Stephen and Jon present an award together. [Or Steve Carell for that matter!]

I liked how Jon pandered to the Academy Awards by commenting that if they had written him a song… pretty funny! [I would have liked to have seen "Much Worse Things" win but was surprised by the Justin shut-out!]

Next year will be the year The Colbert Report takes away The Daily Show’s run– I can feel it! I love TDS, but it just makes sense that TCR be the one to replace it!

    John Hodgman
    Jon Stewart
    Ricky Gervais

… the funniest quartet in the industry.

  9. Dee says:

I totally LOVE Jon, but 7th Emmy in a row is a bit too much! The entire Emmy show was just a repetition of last year, it was almost bland! Stephen absolutely deserved at least one award and it’s weird how the TV Emmys keep awarding the Oscars! I was disappointed with almost every single award, but I laughed out loud during the Jimmy Falon segment, esp, seeing Steve Carell cracking up! Otherwise, BOOO Emmy committee!

  10. MaryLovesColbert says:

I honestly had fun watching the show! I enjoyed Neil Patrick Harris as host and I thought the Dr. Horrible interlude was absolutely hysterical!! However, I have mixed feelings on the ‘variety’ category. I’m genuinely crushed that Colbert Christmas was snubbed, I’m genuinely devastated for poor Stephen and rather upset that he lost, but I’m also genuinely happy for Jon and the TDS crew. It’s a weird, mixed reaction, I guess.

  11. VerdureVision says:

Dr. Horrible was the surprise of the night. I was laughing out loud with delight at that segment. (No friends, TV is not going away thanx to the Internets. Not at today’s tech levels. Buffering much? Ugh!) But Stephen completely shut out…unbelievable. True disappointment. Next year has to be the lock, right? I mean, Operation Iraqi Freedom! Gotta good feeling about that one… Ricky Gervais must have humour seeping out of every British pore, dunny? (Eew!) Still, very funny man! And Hodgman providing “color commentary” during the victory walks to the stage? GREATNESS! Ooh, and the Family Guy segment…dark, twisted, hilarious! (But that’s the way I roll.)

Long story short: one of the sharpest, funniest, and most entertaining Emmy ceremonies I believe I’ve seen in years.

  12. lockhart43 says:

I was incredibly upset that Jon and Stephen didn’t present together.
They’ve presented together for the past three years, and their bits are always the funniest parts of the night. I have a feeling that they didn’t have them present so they could have LL Cool J and Chris O’Donnell go instead (to plug their new CBS show), which is just ridiculous. No one cares about Chris O’Donnell. LOL Well, I don’t, anyway.
AND Colbert Christmas not winning was just uncalled for.

But anyway. My favorite part of the night was definitely Ricky Gervais presenting Best Variety. He’s always so hilarious! I wish he’d host next year. They always cut to Stephen or Jon during his bit, and the shot of Stephen was just adorable. I thought Neil Patrick Harris did a fabulous job of hosting (Dr. Horrible was hilarious), and John Hodgeman’s color commentary was fantastically witty and funny. TDS winning (twice!) was a highlight as well :D
I’m definitely looking forward to Stephen ranting on not winning on tomorrow night’s show ha. Maybe he’ll put the Emmys On Notice ;)

  13. Katt says:

I’m rather crused that TCR didn’t win but am so glad that the awards went to TDS. I was quite shocked to see Jon in a tux, he always wears a plan suit and Evie and Tracie looked beautiful.

The world will be a happy place the day someone let’s Gervais host an awards ceremony!!

  14. juice says:

Favorite parts: John Hodgman, TDS winning, Ricky Gervais, NPH hosting, Toni Collette winning (I’ve never seen the show, but she’s a fantastic actress), all the nominations Stephen & TCR earned, despite the outcome.
    Honorable Mention: Jimmy Fallon

Not Favorite parts: The total shut out of all things Colbert; not seeing Stephen & Jon present; an awards show being allowed to win an award (so will NPH be nominated for an Emmy next year for hosting last night?!) – and I say this as a devoted fan of “the guy with claws for hands.” I mean, honestly, which song runs through your head at 2 a.m. – Jackman’s opening number, or “There Are Much Worse Things”? ;)

I’m looking forward to how Stevie C. treats the Emmys on Tuesday’s show. Harper, please share here about the taping, you lucky Zoner!

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

  15. Ashley says:

Poor. Stevie C. didn’t win anything. But, I’m glad that TDS did their thing and won an Emmy. In the words of Stephen: “It’s still in the family!”

I’m wondering what he’s gonna say on Tuesday like everyone else. He would rather not say anything, be mad about the fact that he lost to TDS, or depressed because he got nothing.

I still can’t believe that Hugh Jackman won that award for Original Music & Lyrics. I was hoping Colbert Christmas would get something. And I don’t understand how an award show should win an award. It’s kinda redundant. :-/

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

  16. Caitlin says:

Yeah, Colbert Christmas was TOTALLY snubbed. And I thought for sure that if Jon won Best writing, Stephen would get Best Show(since last year, Stephen won writing and Jon best show). I’m not complaining, though, since I am a die-hard TDS freaktard. (Been watching since the Kilborn years, so I have my loyalties.) We love you Stephen, with or without Emmys!

I LOVED that Jon and Stephen hugged, like TWICE! So cute. And Ricky Gervais, always a pleasure. I think a Steve Ca-rell/Gervais joke is officially an Emmys tradition. The Dr. Horrible cameo was THE BEST. SO NERDY!

I loved how when Jon won, Hodgman said “This is The Daily Show’s 900th Emmy…” SO HILARIOUS!

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

  17. Karen says:

Come on, Emmy people. It was funny the first couple of years. But how could you not give Stephen’s Christmas special an award?

I’ll probably get flamed for this, but I gotta say it:

Honestly, I think the writing is more challenging on TCR than TDS. I love Jon, but the past couple of years TDS has been stuck in a rut. It’s mostly Jon at his desk; where is his supporting cast?

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

    • Honestly, I think the writing is more challenging on TCR than TDS.

Very true. TCR’s brilliant writing achieves a level of sophistication that very few shows can match. I actually can’t think of one…or maybe because I don’t watch TV all that much anyway, save for TDS and TCR. TCR has brilliant writers. They’ve been robbed of an Emmy! But I’m also happy TDS won.

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

    • Caitlin says:

Now I’m convinced that the Academy voters just don’t GET Stephen’s comedy. It’s too nuanced or over their heads or something. I agree that he should’ve at the very least won for Colbert Christmas. I thought he’d get best writing this year as well.

I don’t agree, however with Jon being “stuck in a rut.” TDS has been on FIRE this past year. Granted, it’s a different character of satire, but no less quality. Jason Jones’ stories on Iran had better reporting than anything I’ve seen on CNN or MSNBC, and Joliver has just been getting better and better. The show itself is undeniably influential, and probably will continue in that vein for a while, which may be part of the reason he keeps getting Emmys. You know these award shows are popularity contests and they award people who have tenure(not that that’s always bad). Stephen’s just gotta hang in there. He’ll win sooner or later. Hopefully sooner!

I’m not a huge fan of award shows, and mainly just tune in when I know someone I really love is up for an award. So all I cared about last night was Colbert, Stewart, and Carell. So I was disappointed that none of them even presented. And I truly think TCR deserved an Emmy, and was totally bummed that they didn’t get anything. I was happy for Jon and TDS, yet was still like, “*hmph* Colbert should have won…”

Ricky Gervais and Jimmy Fallon’s presentations were funny though. And I thought NPH did a good job and I liked his opening number (but don’t think it should be nominated for it’s own Emmy next year or anything).

But does anyone know where I can see Stephen’s acceptance speech from last year, when he won? I just searched youtube, but can’t find it.

Hi all. I’m a newbie here, although not quite a newbie to The Colbert Report. Started watching last March and been hooked ever since. Anyway, I was really hoping they’d win. Oh well. I think they’ll win next year coz TCR had a lot of great stuff this year.

But I’m just curious. I’m not from the US so I’m not really familiar with how the Emmys go. Were the awards given out last night based on the performance in 2008? Thanks! ^_^

To be eligible for this year’s Emmys, the programs submitted had to originally air between June 1, 2008 and May 31, 2009.

  20. Roseha says:

sumomo, the Emmys have a weird deadline each year, I think it’s June or something. Maybe someone here knows the exact date?

Well, I did think Ricky Gervais was the funniest person I saw (didn’t watch the end of the show). He was the one person who made me laugh out loud with that routine about being more handsome than half the room. It was great that Jon immediately claimed that he and his group were better looking than Ricky.

The only reason I can imagine that Stephen and Jon weren’t asked to introduce (besides CBS’s obvious desire to plug their own shows) was maybe that the Emmy people were afraid they’d “complain” about their category being eliminated. But that’s just silly, NPH launched into a big “complaint” after he lost and it was funny. Stephen and Jon doing something similar could have been the highlight of the show.

You, know, I’m sure Stephen is happy for Jon, and without TDS there wouldn’t be a TCR, but I just wonder how many Emmy voters even watch TCR. It’s almost the way they seem to treat a lot of programming, “Oh let’s give it to West Wing again. Let’s give it to Frazier again. Let’s give it to Tony Shaloub again.” They do this *all* the time and you really don’t know how much of Stephen’s show they even watch. And I agree that his humor may just be way too subtle for a lot of them. I started watching Stephen last December and it did take a while to catch on to everything he was doing. And I watch every show. How many of the Emmy voters do?

I really think there should be a limit on how many awards one person can win for a given role/program, or how many times the same show can win, and I have thought this for years whether it was drama, comedy, whatever. That’s always been my problem with the Emmys.

Maybe Stephen can do a “guest appearance” on his own show next year, since that category still exists! Anyway, good luck next year Stephen & co!

I guess now’s a good a time as any to say this:

I think we should all take a moment and take a note of something. I personally believe we’re living in the Golden Age of Satire right now. This is the one of those eras that in the future we’re going to say “remember back in the good ole’ days when…?” With TDS and TCR delivering such great material night after night for 4 nights a week, I mean, yeah, late night comedians on the broadcast networks can write jokes about politics, but our favorite duo are on a whole nother level. It’s nice that they’re recognized for it year after year at the Emmy’s, but even without the Emmy’s, TDS/TCR are still top-notch, intelligent, quality shows to me.

To Allison Silverman, congratulations and thank you for being a part of that. To the rest of the Zoners, sit back, relax, and enjoy. This is a time like no other.

The only letdown for me was Jon and Stephen not presenting. I was very happy for TDS. I thought it was well deserved, considering that they submitted one of their shows from Denver for this year’s Emmys. Those week of shows were golden. Had TCR won, I’d have been pretty happy for them, too. Just as long as they keep it in the family. :D

Each time I hear someone promote something because it’s sophisticated or subtle, I remember a footnote about Literary Reviewmanship in a great humor book, The Complete Upmanship by Stephen Potter:

The Lifemanship Correspondence College advised using the phrase, “Delightfully fresh and spontaneous,” because it “will suggest that the critic, in spite of his rather scruffy appearance, is himself pretty fresh and spontaneous.” (italics in original)

It just makes me laugh. At nothing again, I suppose. ;)

I truly hope that the Emmy people will get over their short term memory and give TCR the Emmy for next year. The Iraq shows will have been over a year ago at that point.
I thought the funniest parts of the Emmy show was the Dr. Horrible bit, Jimmy Fallon and the writer’s nominee clips.
Why didn’t Stephen and Jon present? I thought they would and was waiting for it all night.
I also agree that it’s weird to give an Emmy to another award show.
If I could choose who should write the Emmy broadcast it would be Stephen, Jon, Conan, Steve Carell and Ricky Gervais.
BTW, I think that Stephen started a trend. I saw that some people were complaining about not winning. Wasn’t he was the first one to do that back in ’06?
