Emmy Night 2009

emmyHoly cow, it’s that time of the year again – EMMY NIGHT! We’re so excited for Stephen and Team Colbert as they walk the red carpet and get ready for the biggest award night of the year.

This is how we’re going to do things around here. All of the Zoners are encouraged to chat throughout the show in the comments here, and we will be letting people know here as soon as the award winners are announced.

We’ll also be doing live reporting of any interesting appearances on the Emmy red carpet, from the E! red carpet pre-show, and if Jon or Stephen end up on any of the “surprises”, we’ll report that too (they’re not scheduled to be presenting this year).

All of the winners will be behind the cut, so please, join in the conversation and the community as we celebrate the 2009 Emmy Awards!

Here are the categories where Stephen Colbert or the ‘Colbert Report’ are nominated:

LET THE LIVEBLOGGING COMMENCE!!!!

The E! Red Carpet show has started. This, my friend, is what separates the fair weather fans from the hard core fans. *sigh* Ryan Seacrest makes my ears bleed/

Also, if you’re Twittering, follow other Zoners by using the hashtag #TCRemmy.

3:43p PDT
Steve Carell and Nancy Walls look fantastic on the red carpet. Apparently Stephen is there, as he’s been seen in the corners and side of the screen. But no features on the E! red carpet show yet.

3:57p PDT
Stephen and Evie were wonderful. Stephen’s lovely bride Evelyn is wearing a gorgeous fuscia halter dress. The interview started with Ryan asking Stephen about the Wikipedia entries for Stephen Colbert and “Stephen Colbert” (the character he plays). When asked by Ryan to define the difference between Stephen and “Stephen”, Evie said, “One’s nice, an one’s a jerk.” To which Stephen added, “One’s not invited home. One better not show up for dinner.” Then Evie chimed in again – “One’s dumb, and one’s very smart!” When asked about the rudeness that’s been happening in the media lately, Stephen responded “I’m thrilled about it. I hope on stage tonight I can start a dialogue about health care and someone will jump up and call me a nazi.”

4:21p PDT
There is no better angle for me than underneath the nostrils. – Jon Stewart to Ryan Seacrest

4:26p PDT
Stephen signs on the signature cam: Stevie C.

5:10p PDT
I love Neil Patrick Harris. That is all.

5:44p PDT
Sexyback played by the orchestra FTW!

6:05p PDT
I’d love to know what the snarky comment was from Jon Stewart to Stephen after the big reality dance number.

6:39p PDT
ZOMG DR. HORRIBLE!!

7:03p PDT
0 for 2, so far for Team Colbert, but congrats to the ‘Daily Show’ crew for their win for Best Writing!

7:15p PDT
Well, kids, we’re 0 for 4, but again, congrats to the ‘Daily Show’ for their best Variety show win.

“This, my friend, is what separates the fair weather fans from the hard core fans.”

I’m in Ontario and I can’t actually FIND the E! red carpet pre-show, otherwise I would be enduring alongside you :-( I’m watching Star Wars instead (such a burden, haha).

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

  2. SazzrahUK says:

I’m watching it! Just saw Steve Carell being interviewed, he is so nice :-) I hope there is some form of surprise involving Jon and Stephen, I’ll be a bit disappointed if there isn’t!
I’m in England, so staying up till 4am watching the emmys….I have a day off work tomorrow, so what the hell!

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

  3. Mel says:

Watching live too, hope I can find a live stream link that actually works. I’m in Germany, so I gotta stay up till 5. Crossing my fingers for Jon and Stephen!

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

  4. Ann G. says:

I actually caught Stephen and Evie’s appearance on the red carpet. I wasn’t watching E!, just happened to turn to it at the right time, and there they were! They both looked gorgeous.

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

  5. Mel says:

I’ve finally seen Stephen and Evie. They both look great

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

  6. Dbells says:

I would love for someone to call Stephen a Nazi out of no where, especially if it was Jon XD!! (or somehow Taylor Swift, his secret love X) )

I’M ROOTING FOR YOUR REPORT! (and Daily Show 0.~)

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

  7. mori says:

i missed stephen and evie! :( i was making grilled cheese at the time. the weird name signing- ‘stevie c’ i think?- was adorable though.

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

  8. Laaaura says:

Stephen and Jon aren’t scheduled presenters this year, after the epic years in the past!? Awww.

I missed Stephen and Evie’s interview, but just saw Jon and Tracey. And saw Stephen sign Stevie C. haha!

I see Jon went for the tux this year. He looks nice!

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

  9. meaculpa says:

I turned it on just in time to see Jon and Tracey, but I missed seeing Stephen. =(

    By the way, helllooooo NFZ!

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

  10. MaryLovesColbert says:

    I can’t believe they aren’t scheduled to present!! :(

Thanks for setting up this very organized Emmy post!

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

    • Mel says:

I know :( It’s been the highlight of the show for the last years.

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

      • mrtigger001 says:

I’m hoping that jon or stephen is going to rudely interrupt one of each other’s award acceptance speeches and insist that someone else had the greatest late night shows of all time.

        one can hope.

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

  11. Dbells says:

I’m somehow missing all these Stephen and Jon moments D:

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

  12. colbaby says:

Wow, so I’ve missed all the fun red carpet moments. Hopefully they’ll end up online.

    So they’re not presenting?! :(

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

    • juice says:

I missed the red carpet, too. Stupid lesson plans! They’re done, so now I can watch the Emmys.

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

  13. Dee says:

I jussstt arrived from the Nokia Theater! I didnt get a glimpse of Stephen but I did see Jon! Also, saw everyone from Mad Men! yay

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

  14. Roseha says:

Oh, I was wondering why Stephen and Jon weren’t mentioned as presenters this year. What are they thinking? But I am glad they were on the red carpet, I DVR-d it so I can see it later. I hope something funny will happen. Is Conan there? Maybe they can have another spontaneous “feud”!

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

  15. bipolypesca says:

I had a terrible sinking feeling that American Idol was going to win that first one. What, dear gods, is the world coming to?

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

  16. juice says:

Well, if it couldn’t be TCR, I’m glad TDS won.

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

  17. bipolypesca says:

I totally agree with juice that it’s better TDS than neither, but gosh… I really do feel that TCR’s writing is better than TDS’s. Now, if it was an award for ‘best interviews,’ I’d have to admit that Jon should get that one, hands down. But for overall writing? There’s so much more clever crafting involved in having to write for a character saying the opposite of what he’s actually trying to get across–not to mention the addition of writing for Bullet–whereas the bulk of the writing done for TDS is Jon saying pretty much what he really means. It’s much more straight-forward. Difficult! Yes. But, still. I’m a bit confounded by this decision… though I suppose I shouldn’t be: See American Idol comment above. heh

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

    • Laaaura says:

Yeah, this is exactly the thing. The Daily Show is brilliant, but writing for The Colbert Report is even more so due to the fact that they are writing for such a character.

I’m glad TDS won, but yeah, I am sad that TCR didn’t win.

I’m also sad that Jon and Stephen aren’t presenting. This show could really use more Stewart and Colbert. I’m so biased, and I am very bored watching this now.

Oh yeah, and it truly is a pet peeve of mine when award shows win awards. I don’t know. It just irritates me. I mean, it clearly aggravates me even more when TCR is nominated in the same category, but still.

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

      • bipolypesca says:

Totally with you on the award-for-awards-show thing. When I saw the Hugh Jackman/81st AAA on the list, I was pretty damn sure they were going to hand that one over, and I’d kind of written it off (despite the fact that it was sooooooo not deserved), but it still torques my jaw, man. Un. Fair.

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

  18. whatsername says:

Sigh. The Emmy goes to — the Emmys.

Can’t they just add a category for “Best award show”, and get them away from the other shows?

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

    • bipolypesca says:

Seriously. They have the room now that they’ve eliminated Stephen’s category, right? Grrr…

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

    • Roland says:

I am saddened about this as well. They essentially have an award show to honor other shows.

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

  19. venus says:

if anybody’s interested in the e! red carpet interview, i uploaded the video here:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o18svLdei8s
hopefully youtube won’t take it down.

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

  20. Ms Interpreted says:

It’s no less sincere, but I’m getting awfully tired of having to say, “Well, if it couldn’t be The Colbert Report, I’m glad Jon and Co. won.” I really am happy for The Daily Show crew, but I do wish more people recognized the brilliance of The Report. I’d love to see Stephen with some more hardware, and it would have been nice to send Allison off with a final Emmy for her work on The Report.

Nonetheless, congratulations, Jon and your “ninety writers”!

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

    • Roland says:

She still has a chance next year with the Iraq shows!

And yes, at least it was TDS rather than SNL. SNL has some funny parodies as the cold open, maybe one funny skit once in a while, and the rest is just painful to watch.

Still think that the TCR writers do a better job as they have to breakdown the same stories as TDS, then do a huge spin.

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

      • juice says:

“She still has a chance next year with the Iraq shows!”

        I keep telling myself that.

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

    • harper says:

I totally agree! Colbert has much more brilliant writers than TDS! They took the bagel tonight:(

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

    • dentry says:

I have to agree also. I’m happy for Jon and TDS, but I really think Stephen and TCR do not get the credit they deserve. The writing for TCR is way better than the TDS in my opinion. But Oh well, the Academy made their decision. I guess, the old saying goes, there’s always next year.

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

    • Michele says:

It does get tiresome doesn’t it? I mean, I love TDS and I’m sincerely happy for Jon and crew but spread the love around a bit. TCR deserves some of it too.

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

      • dentry says:

It sure does. I agree TDS is wonderful and I do love it also. But I think the Academy needs to shake things up a bit, and give another show like TCR a chance to win once in awhile.

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

  21. Roland says:

    Stewart!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Here’s some screen grabs that i’ve taken so far, they aren’t really high quality but it is what it is….

  22. supernova8610 says:

This is so frustrating… TCR is obviously the best out there; they DESERVE an Emmy!!!!!

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

  23. MaryLovesColbert says:

Sigh, so sad. I’m glad for TDS, definitely, but so sad for Stephen. :(

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

    • bipolypesca says:

Sad for Allison, too. Would’ve been the perfect send off. And they sure as heck deserved it.

::sigh:: Well. Now I’m depressed. Hmm… I suppose I could attack the Americone Dream in my freezer.

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

      • MaryLovesColbert says:

Yeah, it definitely would have been a good send-off. Sigh. So sad.

Aw, I wish I had some!

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

    • luvtcr says:

Hopefully next year they will win — it will be a delayed send off but a good one nonetheless. The Iraq shows will be eligible for next year and she definitely helped make those shows great!

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

  24. wren says:

Ok, the Hugh Jackman number was fine. But honestly, have you ever found yourself humming it, or singing it? To me, that’s the mark of outstanding music & lyrics. I guess they went with flash. *sigh*

Glad for TDS wins, but sad to see the Report 0 for 4. Off to bed to nurse my cold/flu…

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

  25. Mel says:

It would have been great for Allison, and also, the whole team deserves it so much. Happy for TDS, but really sad that TCR didn’t get anything

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

  26. Roseha says:

Yes but the Emmmys are like this. They don’t like to share the love, that’s why Frazier got something like 19 Emmys. (No offense to any Frazier fans, but you know what I mean.) I mean, TCR has had so many amazing shows, and it should have gotten something. You could almost tell by the clips of Stephen, they were so short. Springsteen at the Super Bowl seemed to be getting more time.

sorry Stephen but I know you will have great material for us next week:)

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

    • dentry says:

Your right, the Emmy’s definitely don’t like to share the love. Same goes for the Amazing Race (Which I do like) but they have won 7 times in a row. Can’t wait to hear what Stephen has to say on the show Tuesday night.

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

  27. Colleen says:

Congrats to the TDS crew, I’m happy they won. I love both shows equally, so I really think both should win in a giant glob of emmy deliciousness.

Also, I was cracking up when John Hodgeman was going “This is the 79th year The Daily Show has been on. This is their 900th emmy, which frankly is too much”

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

  28. mrtigger001 says:

    Outstanding Directing… Idol? Really? Really??

Outstanding Original Music and Lyrics…. while Hugh Jackman is an incredibly talented man, is it not odd that an award show would nominate and select another award show?

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

    • Lucy says:

I just watched it on YouTube. While I agree that Hugh Jackman is talented (“he’s got claws for hands!”), I thought the song was eh.

If they’re going to give the award to another awards show, I think they should put the awards shows in their own category and for once give Chuck or Jimmy a chance to win.

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

      • Lucy says:

Sorry, I wasn’t paying close attention when I wrote that: one of the awards shows (usually the Oscars telecast) always wins in the Directing category. Still, “American Idol” winning is incredibly lame.

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

  29. John says:

    AAAAAGGHH!!!

AMERICAN IDOL! ARE YOU F***ING KIDDING ME???

And what the hell is with Hugh Jackman getting the award for his work on another awards show? Doesn’t that break some sort of cosmic awards show rule?

All right, well…Congratulations to TDC, they definitely deserved it. Better luck next year, zoners.

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

  30. silkyjumbo says:

heads up, zoners – the shows from iraq weren’t eligible this year, but they will be next year. so there’s that.

    (recaptcha – baffling term)

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

  31. Tiger says:

wow…I SO DO WISH TCR had won something, but I can’t get all cranky about it because another show I watch every day (TDS) did win and that is thrilling. I am basically FINISHED with these awards shows winning stuff. it’s so not the same commitment of time.

I also wished that Hugh Laurie would win and he didn’t. I don’t watch much TV besides TDS/TCR so I don’t have much else to say. sweet pics and great coverage on NFZ again this year! :D

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

  32. ImOldFashioned says:

I agree with the other Zoners who made the point that TDS is great but TCR certainly deserves something–spread the love Academy!

The defeat that really cheezed me off was the loss of “Much Worse Things” to the (pretty lousy in my opinion) AA song montage. That beautifully written and performed song, the heart of that wonderful Christmas special lost to a 3rd rate ripoff of a Billy Crystal bit from a decade (or more) ago?

    Just plain wrong.

I also really enjoyed the sight gag outside the Letterman marquee–I nod to it on my way to Colbert tapings.

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

    • ColbertGirl27 says:

I can’t agree with you more regarding “Much Worse Things.” Such a heartfelt song. Well, we know who the real winner is no matter who won the gold statue.

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

  33. ColbertGirl27 says:

I feel so sad right now and feel far from a happy, shiny Zoner. Of course, we must stay positive and not dwell on the negative. Stephen, with or without awards, you’re a treasure to us. In the long run, I believe your work will far outlast a bizarre Oscar dance number or American Idol. These things are fleeting, but your work will stand the test of time.

I look forward to your rant against the Emmys this Tuesdasy which I hope will be both in and out of character;)

    recaptcha: timepiece clownish

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

  34. Catherine McCaw says:

I’m in China, so this is about my only source for TCR-related Emmy news. Thank you! I can’t believe Jon and Steven weren’t presenters this year. Last year’s effort still cracks me up.

Who thinks Steven should start a feud with Jon Stewart and/or Hugh Jackman?

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

  35. Silvarius says:

While yes, we’re sad Stephen didn’t win and Jon did, either way, it’s still a victory for fake news. Except for the Christmas Special, that decision was just stupid (but let’s not go there).

So congrats to Jon & the TDS crew. Sorry Stephen & the TCR crew. Maybe next year.

And kudos to everyone for the liveblogging/livetweeting. Looking forward to it again next year.

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

  36. TCR’s writing is so sophisticated and brilliant. Can’t believe they didn’t win. :( I’m happy TDS won, though.

So cute to see Stephen so happy for Jon. I loved it when Jon looked back at his wife Tracey and Stephen and Evie (love her dress!) when they won for writing. :)

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

  37. Maia says:

After all that I read here, I should be happy that I wasn’t able to watch it. And Stephen and Jon didn’t even present an award. Sad, very sad.
But I’m happy for Jon. He’s a great guy and my hero :-) And his wife was there this time!

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0
