Better Know A Completist (Colbert U Edition): Lisa

This post series profiles the wonderful Colbert Completists who work to keep this site the absolute best Stephen Colbert fan site on the internet.

Better Know A CompletistBlogging handle:
Lilimich/Lisa M

Age:
32

How long have you been a Completist?:
I started out as a humble contributor to Colbert University in mid-2008 and slowly worked my way to Senior Fract Archivist earlier in 2009. I now handle most of the odds and ends of updating the site with all things Stephen and could not possibly have more fun doing so!

What’s your “Completist” beat?:
I spend most of my time adding content that’s posted on No Fact Zone to the various sections and courses of Colbert University, in addition to adding notable Colbert Report videos as well. Our mission is to create and maintain an accurate and up-to-date archive of all things Stephen for all the loyal members of the Colbert Nation!

Occupation:
I just started a new job as a Medical Editor for a small medical publishing company in Central New Jersey that creates Continuing Medical Education (CME) programs and activities for doctors (which they must complete in order to maintain their license). Right now, I’m handling a lot of clerkical-type duties, but I’ll eventually progress to running, editing, and administering projects on my own from start to finish. I just finished my second week there, and so far, so good.

When did you first become a ‘Colbert Report’/ Stephen Colbert fan?:
Back in 2007, hubby started watching The Report and at the time, I thought Stephen’s humor was crude and not at all funny (what was wrong with me?). When he broke his wrist, I saw the cast and thought, “Oh no! He broke his wrist! I wonder if he’ll talk about how it happened.” So, I stuck around and watched the show a few more times and *finally* became an It-Getter and a huge fan. Shortly thereafter, I Am America (and So Can You!) and the Vanity Fair article (*purrs* Hello cover…) came out and I became officially addicted to all things Stephen…and I haven’t looked back!

What are some of your hobbies outside of blogging?:
During my down time, I enjoy spending time with my wonderful It-Getter husband of over 6 years as well as all our friends and family. I love to read, write, and take all of our friends’ money during our semi-regular Texas Hold ‘Em poker tournaments. I also love watching documentaries, going to concerts, and visiting as many New Jersey diners as humanly possible. I’m also a huge Foodie and I LOVE The Food Network.

Favorite recurring character on the ‘Colbert Report’:
If you consider it a character, “Bullet” from The Wørd is hands-down my favorite. I miss “Bobby” terribly and really wish PK Winsome would make more frequent appearances.

What’s your favorite part about participating in the Colbert fandom?:
The wonderful and fabulous folks I’ve met on No Fact Zone and in the rest of the fandom are intelligent, kind, supportive and hilarious! I really enjoy commenting on and discussing political and social issues of the day with all the Zoners, and I love the fact that I found a group of people who also have an insatiable need to know the latest breaking Stephen Colbert news at all times. Before I met all you guys, I thought I was the only one!

Favorite quote by Stephen Colbert:
When I first came across this quote from the main Home page on Colbert University, it struck a chord; I adopted it as my personal mantra and this philosophy has helped me get through some pretty awful stuff:

I would say laughter is the best medicine. But it’s more than that. It’s an entire regime of antibiotics and steroids. Laughter brings the swelling down on our national psyche, and then applies an antibiotic cream. [...] Obviously, it’s a challenge to make light of the darkness but, um, it’s better than crying about it.

- From “Stephen Is King!”, Entertainment Weekly, January 2007

Is there anything else you’d like to tell the Zoners?:
I only attended my first Colbert Report taping a few months ago, and aside from my wedding day and the day hubby proposed to me, it was the most unbelievable, indescribable experience of my life. The brandy new Audience Coordinator sat us in the front row, I got a high-five from Stephen before the audience Q & A, he answered my audience question, I actually got on TV during the taping, and he shook my hand at the end of the night!! In a word: surreal.

Here’s the clip I’m in (at around 1:14; I’m standing to the right of the blonde with glasses, in the front row)!

wow, it’s really cool you got on TV in a forever sort of way! I was captured in the zoom in before the first segment, but that’s cut when they have it in pieces instead of a full show. now I only have a single screen cap to commemorate my microsecond of fame! I’m a little bit tickled that Stephen’s also in the frame for me though.

that’s also a great mantra! sometimes I’m so surprised, a little bit of comedy can work wonders when I’m in a bad mood. I don’t necessary go into it hoping to feel better, but seeing things from that perspective often leaves me relieved, even when the “funny” situations are on the darker end of comedy.

also…you not liking Colbert’s humor reminds me of my avid dislike of Jon Stewart through my early years of high school. I was annoyed when other people talked about him and his jokes! then after I got to like Colbert, I became a regular (though not completist) viewer of TDS, and now I really enjoy Jon!

now that I’ve practically written another post here, and it’s all about me, really, I’ll wish you the best settling into your new job and wrap this comment up!

Loved reading your bio Lisa! How nice that you enjoyed 15 seconds of TV fame. I’ve never really thought of Stephen as crude…but that’s either because he really isn’t that crude or he emanates such a wonderful person underneath that he never seems to be crude:) I know you don’t find him that way anymore anyhow. When I think of crude, I usually think of Bill Maher…but I digress…

I have been so IMPRESSED with Colbert University and greatly appreciate your cataloging all of the audience questions which would be lost in the Internets otherwise. These are “unpublished” pieces of information that we could not find easily find otherwise…and to break it down into categories is really something. Amazing work. Thank you, thank you, thank you!

Hope you continue to enjoy and grow in your new job!

I think Stephen would be happy to know that your taping experience was close to your wedding proposal in joy production. Thanks for doing all your do at CU and doing it for the joy machine and the Zoner community. And thanks to all completists for their contributions and interesting bios.
