The Top 10 Best ‘Colbert Report’ episodes EVER! – #2

We’re almost there, folks! The end of the break approacheth, as does the end of our Top 10 list. The penultimate entry to our No Fact Zone Top 10 best ‘Colbert Report’ episodes ever is:

#2 – The Colbert Report: Doritos Spicy Sweet Pennsylvania Primary Coverage from Chili-Delphia — The City of Brotherly Crunch! (Episode 4051 – 4/17/08)

The trip to Philadelphia during the primary season of the 2008 Presidential election was monumental on so many levels. But none of the episodes was as mammoth as this power-hitting episode. Featuring cameos from Hillary Clinton, John Edwards, and Barack Obama, this proved beyond a shadow of a doubt the true power of the Colbert Bump, or at least politician’s desire for one.

My favorite, favorite, favorite bit in the entire week was the “EdWØRDs: Valued Voters” segment. John Edwards absolutely nailed the delivery of the entire bit, and only got sidetracked a couple of times from the laughter of the audience. I loved the balloon drop from Bullet at the 1,000,000th mention of Edward’s father being a mill worker, and the delivery of “But what does need to be said is that I will only support the candidate who promises to make me a spy. That would be so cool!” was just so friggin’ spot on. After watching that segment, I was kind of wishing he was still in the race. And the funniest part of the whole thing is that Edwards made a call back to the Jet Ski joke in his endorsement speech for Barack Obama.

What did you love about Philadelphia? And did you ever actually try Spicy Sweet Chili Doritos?

Oh, how I loved John Edwards at this point in his career. And oh, how mightily he hath disappointed me. But still, this episode of TCR was awesome even if my political crush on Edwards has turned to ashes.

this is a great episode, made better once you hear stephen talk about it on NPR’s “fresh air.”

my favorite philly moments, however, were stephen & john legend singing and just seeing the roots on the set.

ps – that flavor of doritos might be my favorite. my neighborhood got it a month before it showed up on TCR, so when he first pulled out the bag, i freaked out a little.

Didn’t Terry Gross say that he literally stood on his head for the audience? Haha. I would have so many butterflies in my stomach during such a week that I wouldn’t even think of going upside down!

i believe he said he hurt his back while standing on his head – which means he did that whole show in some sort of pain. jeez, talk about dedication.

Such a FUN episode!! I’d been meaning to watch some of the Philly shows, so this was great! Man, Edwards had so much fun with that edWORDS segment – hilarious!

This episode is special to me, not only because it was hysterically, deliciously funny, but also because it was when I realized I’d become a dedicated member of the Colbert Nation.

  10. Lilimich says:

In response to DB’s question about trying the Spicy Sweet Doritos, wasn’t that the flavor Dortios asked consumers to name? I’m pretty sure they were, and if they were, I did try them before they were even named. They’re pretty damn good too…
