My personal best has to be Stephen singing in Korean.I was searching videos kinda randomly at Youtube and catched that,it was pretty much the first time I saw him and I thought “wow! that’s guy is funny is worth to take a look” …
So…that’s it…

My favourite musical moment (if it counts?) would have to be when Stephen and Jason Chaffetz played ‘Charlene (I’m Right Behind You)’ on Rock Band. It combines wonderful singing- times two!! it’s like Stephen doing a duet with himself!- with the sheer geekiness of a television host and a congressman playing a video game. Plus awkward failed fistbump? <3.

My favorite musical moment was when Stephen sang with Crosby, Stills, and Nash on “Teach Your Children.” It is one of my all time favorite songs and his being part of the group was a total surprise to me. I don’t think I noticed it until they almost reached the chorus and I picked out his voice…and began looking for him but didn’t see a tailored suit and tie–just a random guy at the end in jeans and a cowboy hat. I truly love it when he sings on the show- but this one was unexpected! [A close second is with John Legend on "The Girl is Mine"]

I’m pretty fond of Charlene (I’m Right Behind You). Creepy stalker Stephen is creepy – but funny! Cold, Cold Christmas, from the Colbert Christmas Special extras, is … more on the creepy side.

This is a very difficult question. I just listened through my Colbert music playlist, as I pondered this lol and I’ve decided I will have to split my favorite musical moments into three categories.
The first category being the songs I liked the best and where Stephen’s voice sounded especially nice.
Let My People Go
The Girl Is Mine
The second category is based on funniness factor:
Singin’ In Korean
The Lion King medley during a recent BKAD. That’s my favorite Disney movie and I was dying as Stephen just kept singing one song after the other.
Charlene (I’m Right Behind You)
And the final category just being my favorite performance by a musical guest on the show:
Feist – “I Feel It All.”

Oh I LOVED Stephen singing Lion King songs, what BKAD was that?? I’m trying to find it on the website but can’t :-(

Okay, yeah, I just went to watch it again. It’s actually Better Know A Lobby, not Better Know A District. Such a good segment hahaha!

(I’m an admin so I’m not entering the contest, just wanted to chime in.)
Great choices so far, people! :) I’d also include a couple from his non-Report days, like the “How Do I Do It?” duet he did with Steve Carell for Steve Carell Salutes Steve Carell, Hosted by Steve Carell and the national anthem performance that the Daily Show correspondents of the time did on the old Indecision DVD. I think that one’s still my favorite anthem performance — although they’re all delightful — mostly because I love Ed Helms’ voice with Stephen’s on that one.
Oh! And the “Devil Went Down to Georgia” that he and Paul Dinello did was priceless, too.

Oh god, that one with Paul made me laugh so hard the first time I saw it! Such a simple concept, but they pull it off so well!

I Write The Songs – the duet he did with Barry Manilow. It was the first one I ever seen and, what I think, was the best one. His voice in that sounds so sincere, especially when he’s singing with Barry.
As for single artists, I definately enjoyed Yusuf. It was very mellow and the song was suprisingly good. I went and bought the CD the next day while shopping.

Hmm, difficult question. Following Laaaura’s lead, I think I have to split it up by category.
For lovely voice & performance:
Let My People Go (a nice warble and a little bit of soul)
The Girl is Mine (smooth & sweet)
For suave and ridiculous laughability:
Singin’ in Korean
For dancing action:
National Treasure Pt 1 (When Doves Cry lip-sync)
Sexy Back dance (hot hot hot!)
For guest performances:
Feist (I Feel It All)
David Byrne (Life Is Long)
Wilco (Wilco the Song)
(I love the guest and performer choices on the show. No vapid movie stars promoting the latest films, just interesting authors and activists who actually have something to say. And similarly, the musical guests have been incredibly well-chosen – some new surprises, some big names, but always great performances. Kudos to Emily Lazar!)

There have been so many great musical moments on the Colbert Report – Charlene (Stephen with 80s hair and black eyeliner), He’s Singing in Korean (Raiiinnn!), The Girl is Mine with John Legend, Guitarmageddon, the Christmas Special – the list goes on and on. It’s too hard to pick a favorite. If Comedy Central ever released a DVD featuring the best musical moments from TCR, I would buy a dozen copies.

One of my favorite musical moments happens to be the Movits! performance you just embedded. It only took a few bars of “Fel Del Av Gården” for me to know I was hooked. I love the catchy combination of hip-hop, swing, and jazz, and the fact that it was in Swedish made it even more fun. As soon as the song ended and the show went to commercial, I called up a friend (one who) and we immediately set out to buy tickets to the performance on the following Friday night. Our adventure from Connecticut to New York required taking a car, a train, and a subway, but their performance at Joe’s Pub was worth all the trouble. We had a great time and even got to meet and take a photo with everyone in the band. It was a highlight of my summer and I’m immensely grateful that Stephen has such great musical taste, and that he decided to share it with the rest of the Nation.
That being said, I’ve been watching the show from nearly the beginning, and I wouldn’t want “Stephen, Stephen,” Hiphopketball: A Jazzerbration, and the “I Don’t Want You to Mix My Words” remix to go without a mention!

Oh my gosh, I can’t believe I forgot the Lessig Remix! A great tune, glowing face paint, and crazy rave dancing = win, win, win!

I’m going to restrain myself and only pick one musical moment, and that is John Hall and Stephen harmonizing to Dance With Me. Not only is the singing superb, but I’ve also grown to love the song itself. I’ve even tried sneaking the song to my friends’ playlists whenever I’m near their computers!
Also, it’s nice to see how Stephen convinces Hall to sing against his advisers’ recommendations. Must be his South Carolinian charm at work there.

I’m going to have to be unoriginal and chime in with a vote for Stephen and the Colberts’ “Charlene”. Other than the obvious reasons, it makes me laugh because, in the video, Stephen was styled just like all my “cool” friends back in the 80’s.

I would say “Let My People Go” was probably the most moving musical performance on the show and is probably my favorite. I also really enjoyed seeing REM because they were such a huge part of my college life and I’m still a fan. I’ve also enjoyed being introduced to new music, like Lisa Hannigan and Movitz. And Stephen’s duets with guests are always a treat. I really love music and could go on for quite awhile here so I’ll just leave it all at that. :-)

I really adore Singin’ in Korean if only for the M*A*S*H reference which never fails to make me laugh hysterically. Going along with Stephen himself singing, I’d say along with Singin’ in Korean, Charlene (I’m Right Behind You) is definitely one of my favorites, because despite the fact that I’m a ’90s baby, I still got a ton of the ’80s stuff when I was a kid.
As for musical performances on the show, easily Movits!. Seeing the Jazz/Hip-Hop fusion was just phenomenal considering I’m a big swing dancer – I actually just got back from the weekly meeting and a post-dancing dinner and danced with a Swedish friend of mine, though I don’t know if he knows about Movits! or not. I actually flew into Newark the day they played at Joe’s Pub and desperately wanted to go [they look like they put on a fantastic show], but I had to drive up to Massachusetts that night. Maybe they’ll come to Hong Kong? I also adored Lisa Hannigan, because she is just amazing and adorable and seeing her play made me fall in love with her music, even more than if I had just found it on iTunes or something.

Without a doubt, my favourite musical TCR moment was when Stephen joined in on the jam session of the show’s anthem at the end of the Guitarmageddon show. I could watch that over and over and over… I was quite impressed with Stephen’s work on the talkbox, and he seemed to really be enjoying himself.
Ahh, memories… :)

For me I’d have to say:
The Girl Is Mine – John Legend
I Write the Songs – Barry Manilow
And you can’t go past the full package that is “Charlene I’m Right Behind You” Stalking is so totally the new Black!!

I have to go with “Charlene.” It’s a classic Colbert moment, one that every fan knows and it’s the perfect combination of unbearably creepy but also hilarious. I love it! :)

I love all the singing, but some of my very favourites are from an old segment he did on TDS where he sang about the Oscars. Total gigglefit every time. (“Uma Thurman looked just like a two dollar whore!” and then having to clarify it was just for the rhyme, bwah!)

My favorite musical moment would have to go to the deut with Barry Manilow. It was the first time I heard Stephen sing. I listened to it once and, man, I was so addicted to that. I keep listening to it and listening to it and listening, until I finally decided to search for other clips. So I guess this clip took me from “Oh, this Stephen guy is cool” to “Stephen is the awesomest awesome EVER!!” complete with a fangirl squee.

The last song of the Christmas special sung with Elvis Costello (“There Are Much Worst Things”) does such a good job of capturing the “sincerely strange/strangely sincere” game that Colbert’s character plays and which is my favorite aspect of the show. Watching it never fails to make me pause and really listen to the lyrics. It leaves me feeling peaceful, but not resigned and engaged, but not preached at. In the right mood I can even get a little wistful at the line “the answer to all sorrow in a box beneath the tree.” In that sense, we are all even. At least that’s what I believe in . . .

I’ve already kind of shot my wad with this question (you’ll pardon the expression), so I will recuse myself.
However – I did want to join the love for “There Are Much Worse Things” from the Christmas special, and Spoon in a Spork Fight (great handle) has laid out all the reasons better than I could. It’s a much deeper song than it appears at first (it’s also performed live in one of the takes, which is almost unheard of on TV these days).
And I’m not sure if I’m more jealous of Elvis for getting to sing with Stephen, or more jealous of Stephen for getting to sing with Elvis.
I also thought the vocal arrangement of “(What’s So Funny ‘Bout) Peace Love & Understanding” was brilliant. All the music in the Christmas special was great.

I’ve always been a huge fan of Feist. Seeing her on the Colbert Report just minted it.
From their adorable interview – (something along the lines of) “Feist? Leslie? What do I call you…?” “You can call me whatever you’d like, as long as you call me,” to Stephen wearing her sparkly blue dress from the 1234 video… It was all perfect.
And who can pass up Singing in Korean and Charlene (I’m Right Behind You)?
They’re probably the top two Colbert Report clips I constantly revisit.

Wow these are all so great – I love the duet with John Legend on The Girl is Mine because they sound so fabulous together, but I love “Charlene” with the 80s look because it’s so hilariously funny as well. I love any show where Stephen gets to dance – not only was the Movits! episode one of my very favorites, but I just love that jazzy dance move Stephen made on the way over to interview them. I have to cast another vote for “(What’s So Funny ‘Bout) Peace Love and Understanding” from the Christmas show – it works great as a group performance. So many! And yes that old Oscar telecast singing from TDS was great too!

As a former music geek, just about any time Stephen decides to sing brings me so much happy! XD But my all time favorite has got to be Stephen’s duet with John Legend. Why? I was in a bit of a predicament at the time with family, especially my mom, and school, and then that episode aired and it brought me so much joy. That very next day/the following morning, on a completely unrelated note, the giant predicament was completely cleared up. So, that song/segment/episode has always sorta held a special place. c=

Am I too late?
Short answer: Anytime Stephen sings is my favorite.
Faves of faves: Teach Your Children Well w/ CSN (still on my hard drive – thanks to iTunes)
The Girl is Mine
I Write the Songs
Let My People Go
Any time Stephen has sung or “played” Star Spangled Banner, i.e., the “trumpet” duet with Wynton Marsalis – saved that one, too
The entire Christmas Special, esp. duets with John, Jon, Willie, & Elvis
I love duets, can you tell?
Can’t remember her name now, but she stitched her own album cover – loved her music
Movits was FUN! Lyrics were kind of weird (I googled the translation), but the music was fun.
I would buy a DVD (’cause a CD just isn’t enough Stephen!) of Musical Moments of TCR

My favorite musical moment on The Colbert Report would have to be Stephen’s patriotic songs. Not only was it a brilliant satirization of the cheapening of patriotism through song lyrics, but it was just goofy. No other comedian on the face of the planet could have looked as priceless as Stephen did when he transitioned from “My Country ‘Tis Of Thee” to “Walk Like an Egyptian.”
