This post series profiles the wonderful Colbert Completists who work to keep this site the absolute best Stephen Colbert fan site on the internet.
Blogging handle:
nerdygirl
Age:
40
How long have you been a Completist?:
About eight months, I think? Pretty sure it was around the Christmas break.
What’s your No Fact Zone news beat?:
I do the weekly Daily Show Toss recaps, when there’s Tosses to recap. Sometimes if there isn’t, I make one up!
Occupation:
I work for an IT Consulting company in Los Angeles.
When did you first become a ‘Colbert Report’/ Stephen Colbert fan?:
I was a fan of Stephen’s going back to the Daily Show days, although back in those days I was always fonder of Steve Carell. I remember tuning in to the first week or so of TCR and being a little disappointed — I had liked him better as a correspondent. I watched on and off for a while, but was more of a casual viewer until one day a friend sent me a link of Stephen doing the duet of “I Write the Songs” with Barry Manilow. Barry Manilow has always been a bit of a guilty pleasure for me, plus I have always been a sucker for a man who can sing. Especially men with hidden singing talent — I had never heard him sing before. That clip did it — I went from casual viewer to full-on unabashed squeeing fangirl in the space of two minutes. Never looked back. The only way it could have been better would have been if they’d done “Weekend in New England.”
What are some of your hobbies outside of blogging?:
My nerddom extends to classic movies, music, and pretty much anything related to computers. I am currently building a web server and trying to learn PHP programming.
Favorite recurring character on the ‘Colbert Report’:
I miss Tad the Building Manager and Steagle Colbeagle the Eagle.
What’s your favorite part about participating in the Colbert fandom?:
I think as with all fandoms, it’s just really cool when different people from different walks of life can come together in their shared enjoyment of something, in this case TCR. That sounds sappy, but it’s true.
Favorite quote by Stephen Colbert:
I know he didn’t say it, but I’m pretty sure he wrote it (if the commentary track is to be believed); it’s a line from Strangers With Candy: “I cried because I had no shoes, until I met a man who had no feet. And then I laughed my ass off.”
Is there anything else you’d like to tell the Zoners?:
I love it when I’m disappointed in a Toss and everyone else loves it! It makes me see it with fresh eyes. I feel privileged to be participating here, and I’d like to thank DB and all the other Completists for the great work they do here.
I like this whole “Better Know A Completist” bit. I’m pretty sure Stephen saw the “I once cried because…” quote in college. I can’t remember specifics, and I may be wrong with what I do remember, but that seems to strike the right note in my memory vault.

I love that you got turned back on to the Report by Barry Manilow! I was never much of a Manilow fan one way or another, but my opinion of him was bumped up a notch by that interview – he was just so sweet and gracious through the whole thing.
I agree about the toss thing, too. That happens with interviews sometimes for me – maybe there’s something about the guest that bugs me, but other people thought it was great. Often I can see something new in the interview if I watch it again.
Thanks for sharing. I wish they would do so many tosses that you’d be busy with them every day!

Yes! I’d love to hear Stephen & Barry sing “Weekend in New England!”
My favorite toss is Jon’s standing ovation after Stephen & the crew returned from Iraq. After that, any toss where Stephen breaks character (or gets Jon laughing) are my favorites.

Thanks for sharing, nerdygirl! I love your recaps of the Toss. And I don’t think it’s sappy at all that our community comes from all walks of life (and age groups!), but that we have one overwhelming passion.
I’m with juice on my newest fav Toss – where Jon gives Stephen a standing O after the Iraq shows. After that, I think it would have to be the pirate one. That one’s never not funny. A costume *and* a character break!

I loved these BKAC segments! I live in L.A. as well! Maybe we can get together sometime. I think it’s great that you’re a computer guru. Always gives you such an edge no matter where you go! LOVED the Barry Manilow segment as well…especially when Barry notes “Wow. He’s a lounge lizard!” Haha. That was pure gold.
I’m so jealous that you saw Stephen and Steve when they were actually on TDS! What a great time!
I hope someday…maybe for the 500th anniversary episode…Stephen will bring together all characters both old and new and they’ll sing something like “Auld Lang Syne.” Haha.

Forgive me, but I can’t get this song out of my head since this wonderful BKAC segment began:) Caution: Be aware of cheesiness!
