The Top 10 Best ‘Colbert Report’ episodes EVER! – #5

Okay, everybody, let’s work out our Transitive Properties muscle for this next batch of videos. The #5 contender in the No Fact Zone Top 10 Best ‘Colbert Report’ episodes list is:

#5 – Who made Mike Huckabee? – The Jon/Stephen/Conan crossover (Episode 4017 – 02/04/2008)

This technically isn’t one episode, but a trio of three shows, on two different networks. But it simply had to be on the list. So I bring you the highlights of the feud between Stephen Colbert and Conan O’Brien.

During the strike, the struggle to find material was often painfully obvious to the viewers of the shows with striking writers. However, Conan O’Brien, Stephen Colbert, and Jon Stewart pulled an amazing story seemingly out of thin air. The cumulation of the taunts and jabs came to a head in one of the most amazing crossover bits in the history of late night television.

This first clip is Stephen addressing Conan about claiming to have made Mike Huckabee, and giving some history behind the fight.

Then Jon comes onto the ‘Colbert Report’ and settles the argument by claiming that he had made Conan (and brought along some deliciously archival footage to prove it), therefore, he made Huckabee.

And then it got Britney Spears crazy. The crossover started on the ‘Daily Show’. (Fave line: “Nobody puts Baby in a corner!”). Then, the trio take it to the set of the ‘Colbert Report’. The fight finally makes it to the set of ‘Late Night with Conan O’Brien’, where, let’s face it, wackiness ensues.

Does ‘Late Night’ not have the video of their 1/3 of the Jon/Stephen/Conan crossover anymore?

  3. jentaps says:

So much fun! So far these top six episodes plus the honorable mentions have all been my favs.

DB, I don’t know how you chose these, but they’re all teh awesome! You are making the time go by faster.

The whole “Who Made Huckabee” thing was a riot, and especially loved because it was during the strike. All three of the guys are geniuses. And the fight was the lamest, most brilliant thing ever.

    Good times.

  4. ann says:

Loved this! This was one of the things that really made me want to watch all three shows all the time.

I loved the little things, like Conan hits the desk with his shoe, then realizes he had scratched it and tries to fix it. I love how Jon was cracking up when Conan said he’s on a network show, or Jon asking for the screenshot of when he is taller than Conan, or when Conan helps his stunt double up during the fight.

So sad that Conan is in LA now and they can’t do this kind of thing anymore.

It’s been a while since I thought about the legendary feud. I was so mad bc I had decided not to watch either TDS or TCR that night and chose to wait il morning, so when I finally saw TCR I was so enraged that I had missed the whole brawl saga live X(

  6. MaryLovesColbert says:

I LOVE the Jon/Stephen/Conan showdown!! One of the best things they ever did, in my opinion. When Jon came on with that archival footage? Classic! Great choice, ladies. :)

  7. Splendiferous_Zeppelin says:

This whole thing has got to be one of the strangest most surreal moments on TV. So many moments were, though, during the strike. So random and funny. I love how Stephen starts attacking Jon too. I didn’t keep this in mind as I was watching but I don’t think Jon ever attacked Stephen – did he? Was that their way of emphasizing Stephen’s character’s…um, anger issues?

    • Silvarius says:

Jon hits Stephen over the head with a bottle. That’s what starts them turning against each other. Then Jon helped throw Stephen down the stairs, and of course, the final punch at the end. There’s probably more, but I’d have to watch the fight again.

  8. Laaaura says:

I was feeling just as giddy and I had just as big a smile on my face, as if I was watching this for the first time.

The way Conan says: “I have made this clear on my show, a network show! mwuahahaha!” cracks me up so much lol.

  9. a finn of a fan says:

I remember first seeing this on Late Night – at the time I had yet to see TDS or even know who Stephen *was*. Even from that very narrow perspective, the brawl was hilarious beyond belief and effectively made me seek out these two, to me, unfamiliar shows. Needless to say it was love at first sight :) That’s why this particular saga definitely holds a special place in my heart when it comes to TDS/TCR. Also, I love the fun they have with VHS.

Ah yes! Classic and hilarious stuff.

DB, thanks for posting Tha Thrilla from Vanilla!
I missed the whole thing when it happened since i didn’t have cable, & Conan’s show was waaaaaay too late for me.
Those 3 guys are brilliant, absolutely brilliant!

  13. Erika says:

HAHAHA oh the memories. I think my favorite part, besides the fight itself, was when Jon came on The Report and Stephen wouldn’t stop showing the tape again and he said “How come Conan doesn’t look any older?” lol.

  14. MaryLovesColbert says:

Is anyone else having trouble watching the TDS/TCR embedded videos? They aren’t working for me all of a sudden…

  15. Silvarius says:

Love the “Late Night Fight”. While I’m not a huge Conan fan compared to Jon and Stephen, the three of them do work well together.

Maybe it’s just me, but in the extra fight footage, it seems like Stephen doesn’t say much. It’s mostly Jon and Conan doing the talking. Weird.

  16. Lilimich says:

This trilogy of comedy love was just utterly fantastic. I remember being on such a comedy adrenaline rush that I couldn’t go to sleep that night from laughing so hard. Fantastic pick! And the belt removal/desk slapping left me in tears. : )
