The Top 10 best ‘Colbert Report’ episodes EVER! – Honorable Mention #1

Okay, Zoners, we’ve got three weeks to kill, so we’re going to take some time to review not only some of the classic ‘Colbert Report’ episodes out there, but we’ve gone on a quest to find the best of the best. The episodes that kept people talking for weeks, months, or ones that are still mentioned within the fandom as being one that is absolutely unforgettable. We’ll do this series over the course of three weeks, Monday through Thursday, posting at the same time as the ‘Colbert Report’ airs. So if you need your Colbert fix (and who among us doesn’t, really?), we have totally got you covered.

So what is Honorable Mention #1 episode?

Whichever Show You Got To See Live

Let’s face it, no show on television is going to be able to match the one where you got your ticket from Mark, and waited five hours in the heat/cold/rain, and got a high-five in the front row, and got to lip synch to Neutral Milk Hotel with Stephen. Period.

So here’s my Show I Got To See Live. There were so many wonderful moments to remember from that night that sometimes it’s all still a blur. Meeting Mark for the first time. Heck, meeting MsInterpreted and Kinaesthesia for the first time. Getting to stand in line. Getting a shoutout from JenTaps in the holding room. The anticipation of waiting for Stephen to come out. Sitting there, on the front row, soaking in the whole set, memento by memento. Getting to see so many little quirks I had heard about that happen during shows, like seeing Stephen pet his hairdresser’s hair as she fixed his. Seeing him practice his “horn” part during the commercial break and wondering what in the world he was doing, and then supporting myself between my sweet husband and MsInterpreted as we giggled ourselves into oblivion when Stephen started to “play”. Shaking Stephen’s hand. It was all so amazing and wonderful, and I get positively stupid when I think about it too much.

Please tell us about your show in the comments, and your special memories.

July 29th….I stood in the rain for nearly 4 hours. I was first in line. We had no idea who the guest was that night and after much speculation I did not guess right at all. I’m still confused over why Kevin Baker was such a huge secret. Though I still say the extra interview with Meryl Streep totally made up for it.
I was in the front row. I got to high five Stephen twice. At one point he almost elbowed as he came back out because I was leaning a little too far over in my seat.
I can watch the episode now and hear my ridiculous laugh. I can see myself for about a fraction of a second as the camera pans over the audience in the beginning.
The Word was an epic fart joke. And we got a Sport Report with an air sitar.
I got to say good-bye to both Allison (who will be greatly missed) and Meryl Streep as they left.
I got to meet Stephen as he left the studio. The picture is now one of my most prized possessions. Followed by the one I took with Wyatt Cenac and my meeting with Jason Jones.
It was epic. And it will be part of the best vacation ever.

wow! DB, this made my day! being a writer, I’m usually soo tired of even typing one word when I get home, but this made me soo pumped up and spill by heart!
For the record and I just love to brag about this, but I actually sang Holland 1945 by Neutral Milk Hotel with Stephen! best 10 seconds of my life!
I have been to three shows – my guests have been Tom Brocaw, Rich Lowery and The Emmy Nominated Christmas Special! Heck, I have also been on Conan’s show when Stephen was the guest!
I needn’t say more as I already have detailed reports that I have posted here multiple times.
if at all anyone wants to revisit-

And I won a T shirt during the audience herding/rousing by answering the first question Mark asked, “Who was the very first guest on the Report?” (Stone Phillips). I about broke my shoulder throwing my hand up in the air so he could see me. I was way in the back of the room. :-) I was thrilled when Mark said there were people from the No Fact Zone there, and he wouldn’t let them answer any questions. That’s when I called out, “DB!?” We almost met!

Then there was the euphoric tap dancing w/ Stephen. It was actually hard to concentrate on the show after that. And evidently, Fareed Zakaria was standing in the tunnel w/ us (we had no seats). My husband mentioned it later, and I was all like, he was? Jim said he was standing right next to us.

    Best night ever!

I went to the taping when Stephen fell and broke his wrist (6/21/07)! It was awesome! (I always feel like a jerk saying that, cause he did fracture his wrist and all haha). But I was right in the front row and when he came and laid on our laps after falling, his feet were right near me and I totally touched his shoes. (Haha I’m a weirdo).

He did the King of Glory dance based on the question I asked. And I remember I felt like a jerk afterwards cause he just fell and could’ve busted his hip or something and there I was asking him to dance lol. I meant to ask him as a joke if he choreographed any other hymns besides for The King of Glory, but I pretty much just got flustered and mumbled something about, “…. King of Glory!..” and he started doing the dance haha.

There were just so many inside jokes with the audience that it was amaaaazing and it felt special. ^_^
-The audience kept clapping during the Table of Contents, when we weren’t supposed to (I think we were all especially riled up due to the fall lol). So it took prob 3 or 4 times to get a take where we didn’t clap and cheer. So right at the beginning of the take that was the final one, Stephen makes like he’s about to clap his hands before saying “Tonight!”
-After the opening theme song, the side of the audience near the interview table stood up, but the side in front of his desk didn’t, and Stephen was all, “That side of the audience likes me so much more than that side of the audience!” When really, I think we were all still in shock that he just fell and laid across our laps haha
-During the Q&A someone asked if he let his kids watch the show and Stephen said sometimes, but probably not tonight because The Word was naughty (“Porking”). So during the beginning of The Word, he said something like, “certain young people should go to bed now” then he did the shaka brah/hang loose hand signal.
-That hand sign was for his daughter, cause he told us during the Q&A that she called him that day and said it was International Surf Day and that he should talk about that if he needed some material haha. So he said right at the top of the show that it was International Surfer Day and he did the hand sign

  8. centering an epic new york city trip around a two hour Colbert Report experiance on July 14th, was the greatest thing. ever. meeting a fellow zoner (hi kristen!), making my very patient best friend wait in line for hours when we didn’t even need to be there was fantastic. it gained us respect and a promise from stewart (of whom i didn’t know his name till mark messaged me telling me who took over his job..so cool), also got us the title “the nooners” with the rest of the staff. all of which “heard about us” before we even got into the studio. a bit dissapointed by the number of v.i.p. ticketholders who got in first, i held my breath for a decent seat. ..nothing could have prepared me for the moment i turned the corner to the audience; and to the tune of cheers and smiles stewart led me to the best seat in the house, “for the nooners! i told you i’d hook you up!” with pathetic tears in my eyes i squeeled and hugged him. when it came time for high fives and questions, mine was the last stephen took. how i managed to force out words while his undivided attention was on me, i’ll never know. the show went on, and i drank in every moment.
we were introduced to senator wences, i got a taste of my favorite segment ‘the word’, and especially loved the antics that happened when the camera wasn’t rolling.
everyone involved truely did their best to make sure it was a great experiance. it’s definatly one i’ll never forget and one i can’t wait to do again.

  10. Erika says:

I finally had my taping report experience on June 23rd, and it was more amazing than I’d ever hoped. My sisters and I arrived in line at about 2pm and were the first ticket holders. The interns and audience coordinator were the nicest people in the world and we wouldn’t have had the great time we did without their help (my sisters didn’t have their I.D.’s and we got in anyway….shhhh). Then one of my sisters started having a panic attack and the two of them left the line and almost didn’t make it back in time. Again we were helped out by a very patient security guard and intern. So anyways, they were running late (which helped us lol) so we all got WristStrong bracelets, and I got a seat right in front of Stephen’s desk. When he came out, he didn’t do the usual run around the desk bit, and I later found out from other people that he had hurt his back somehow. After a few interesting questions from the audience, including one girl asking to go the bathroom, he called on me and I asked him to sing “Fly Me To The Moon”. Without hesitation he was very beautifully singing, and my favorite part was when he smiled and pointed at me during “You are all I long for all I worship and adore.” Needless to say, I was beaming, bright red, and practically shaking. I’m glad he didn’t call on my sister because she was going to ask him to do King Of Glory, which probably wouldn’t be very good for his back lol. After the show, we waited for a fairly short time when out he came, breaking into song as soon as he saw me. I’m not even sure if he was singing the same song or something else because I was too caught up in the wonder of it all to notice. We got our picture with him and I’ll never forget how soft his coat felt to me….(strange, the things we remember). He was as friendly as could be and chatted for a bit, before finally heading off in his car. An unforgettable night that I will cherish forever. :)

  11. Andy says:

My first time to a taping was in January, and it was the first show after the Christmas break (the guest was John King). I heard about the Q&A session from Mark, and I tried furiously to come up with a question that was funny, yet worth asking (a wag of my finger to the person who asked how hot Iraq was in another taping in June!). Well, I didn’t think of anything, and I was too nervous to ask anything anyway.

The high point was getting to shake Stephen’s hand, though he did notice that I stretched my arm maybe a bit too far, and he started shaking my hand while thinking it was the hand of the woman next to me. He smiled and said something to me (I have no idea what), and I tried to say something back, and that’s when my 10 years worth of English education went out the window and I think I mumbled something about muffins being cool.

On a side note: Before I heard of TCR, I never understood the fandom around a famous person, and I dismissed it as something for teenage girls. But, here I am, a 22 year-old (straight, I might add) man, and probably willing to give my pinky toe to have a beer with Mr. Colbert.

My first taping was on January 15. My friend and I got there at 2pm (first in line) and stood in the cold for hours. The staff were all so nice! The guests were David Gregory and Shepard Fairey. We got the seats right in front of the desk and laughed ourselves silly through the show. I remember just looking around the studio at everything. It was almost hard to pay attention. He shook hands with everyone in the front row before he left the studio and I had a huge, goofy grin on my face.

My second taping was on August 3 and the guest was Tony Zinni. My husband and I had lunch and were bored so we headed over to the studio around 2pm and were first in line. It was a nice day so waiting outside wasn’t a big deal and the interns, Stewart, and Jamilla made it fun. We got the seats in front of the desk and I stuck my hand out a little too far when Stephen ran by and caught the inside of his suit jacket instead of his hand. I was hoping to get to sing along with him to Holland 1945 this time. The last time I was singing along absent-mindedly and looking around the studio like a kid with ADD. I noticed Stephen look at me but he was talking with Allison and not singing. Well this time they didn’t even play Holland 1945 and Stephen talked with Allison on every break anyway. At the end he came down the front row shaking hands and I thought I should tell him how much I enjoyed being there but all I could manage to get out was an awkward, “hi”. *facepalm* D’oh! There’s always next time.

Oh, I love hearing everyone’s taping memories, they never get old. It also gets me super excited that I’m planning my own trip for March (still need to confirm with Stewart that the show won’t be on break).

Last week we were talking about gifts or holidays or something, and I told my husband “OK, just so you know, I only want one thing for Christmas this year. I want to go to NY for a Colbert Report taping.” He smiled, and rolled his eyes a little, then said “Why Christmas?” And I told him because Christmas is when you can ask for big important gifts. And bless his heart, he said “Well, then you’d better call J & L (our friends in Brooklyn) and tell them we’re coming to visit.” :) :) :)

  16. Ms Interpreted says:

Well, after giving this topic a little too much thought, I’ve concluded that I simply cannot pick a favorite memory from the tapings I’ve attended. So here’s my Top Five list, in no particular order:

    1) Same show DB talked about above. Getting to meet her (and EVERYONE else) was spectacular, and the staff of the show was just phenomenal that day!

    2) First show I ever attended, Stephen was playing with his Lord of the Rings figurines as part of the closing segment, and he continued to do so after the credits rolled. Adorable. Also, he and I had a post-show chat that included, among other things, shared contemplation of the hotness of Paul Dinello’s bod. Ha!

    3) The “Singin’ in Korean” day. ‘Nuff said.

    4) On the day of the Mid-Term Midtacular, I ended up asking him about his chest waxing experience. It was supposed to have been part of a bigger question, but he thought I was done when I paused, and he answered with his hilarious story about the experience (the one he’s also told on Conan). Even though it wasn’t the question I had planned to ask, hearing him tell that story live was just priceless. And the energy level for that combined show was awesome.

    5) The last time I was there, Stephen noticed me sitting in the front row during his “victory lap” over to the interview table, grinned, pointed and said, “Hey! Nice to see you!” before starting the interview. I’ve re-watched that interview many a time, and it never fails to make me smile.

Good times, all of them. They really know how to treat their audiences over there at The Report!

  17. luvtcr says:

It is around this time last year that I secured a reservation for my October 23rd visit. The guest was Jonathon Alter from Newsweek- discussing his book about FDR. It was amazing. I went with my sister and a good friend of ours who lives in NYC. We arrived around 2:30pm and were the first in line so we had some nice seats infront of the desk.

During the Q&A a variety of questions were asked and one lady wondered how Stephen felt knowing that CNN was reporting that Al-Queada was hoping he would run for president during the upcoming election… he seemed visibly shaken by this and said he had no idea that was the case. He even mentioned that it wasn’t the type of headline he was hoping to make before the election. Almost immediately he asked his staff to check on that story. Later, during a break from the taping, Stephen addressed the crowd about the story [it had been misconstrued--the report was about Al-Queada, but the ticker at the bottom was reporting a random poll regarding who college students wanted to run for president]and he made a joke about it but seemed relieved. I thought it was nice that he updated us! Another woman asked how he liked his new neighbors–mentioning she was one and he poured on the charm and said she was beautiful.

I was able to ask a question during the Q&A. He called me “The young lady in the front row” and I looked around…and he walked toward me and said, “Yes, you.” I joked that I was in my late thirties–not really young when you work with high schoolers everyday and he laughed. I asked: Is there a song that when you hear it you just have to belt it out at the top of your lungs? He immediately began to sing “King of Glory” and dance around. My little group began to clap and sing with him. At the end he looked over at us questioned “Catholics?” And we said 12 years of catholic school and he laughed. The show started…one mess up during the interview and they had to reshoot but other than that perfect.

At the end, I got a handshake and a “Thank you for coming to the show” I am pretty sure I floated out of the studio.

    Good times.

“I am pretty sure I floated out of the studio.” Haha, very good way to describe it. I’d say that’s gotta be how most everyone feels when they leave a TCR taping.

One of his neighbors was there? Did it look like Stephen recognized her and knew she was really a new neighbor? lol.

My first and only taping was going to the show he did in Philly on U. Penn’s campus. It was the night that Gov. Ed Rendell was on.

I guess the most memorable distinguishing factor of the taping I attended is one that never made it to air, which was Stephen re-singing L-O-V-E in between takes for the audience (in response to Michelle Obama cutting him off mid-song the night before). That takes the cake.

Forgive me if this get’s lengthy. I still get butterflies recalling this story.

I got tickets to TCR for the April 16th episode (the one that featured the “gay storm” commercial) and it was the best! We got there pretty early (like many of you) as we had driven in from Chicago the night before and were determined to have good seats. We ended up 2nd row right near the desk (lots of vips) and never had a camera block our view, which was great! During the warm up and beginning of the q/a session I had been trying to gather the balls to ask a question and when Stephen turned to our section my hand flew up immediately (out of my control haha) and he looked right at me and said “young lady in the 2nd row what’s your question”. In my head I’m like I know he’s calling on me but is he really calling on me?! Total shock on my face I began to tell him that we were visiting from Chicago and he immediately made fun of my “accent” which I was unaware that I had lol. My question to him was ” I know you spent time in Chi at Second City and I was just wondering if during that time you had been a Cubs or Sox fan?” As soon as I mentioned Second City he was giddy and he said that he had lived in Wrigleyville so he was a… Sox fan. My face went from smile to scowl I’m sure (being a cubs fan), and I said “eww what?” and he laughed and said I must be cubs fan and that he felt sorry for me because we always get screwed. I agreed and he then mentioned that he had only gone to cubs games while he lived there and that if he had a preference it would be the cubs. I smiled thinking my time was up when he then started asking me questions. He said “so do you like your beef sandwiches (popular in Chicago, not something I personally have a lot) hot or sweet?” and I said “what, huh?” and hes like “ya know the peppers, hot or sweet?” and I said “ohhh yea, hot for sure” and he said “wet?” and I said “what? no I said hot” and hes like “yea, hot and wet?” (big smirk on his face), me still not getting the joke since I was so nervous said “huh?” and he again said with a big smirk and sexy tone “you don’t like it hot and wet?” me the big idiot who still doesn’t get the joke says “no?” and he says “oh I feel sorry for you again” and now it hits me and I say “ohhhhh! omg!” whole audience is now laughing at me and Stephen is just smiling at me, I was so embarrassed but totally loving it. Again thinking our exchange is done he continues to ask me more questions about Chicago food “where do you like your hot dogs from”, ” have you been to Gold Coast Dogs”, “what about pizza, where do you like to go for pizza” and so on. I must have touched on subject he doesn’t get asked about often and he was excited to talk about because he spent a good chunk of the q/a just talking to me. I felt mighty special and it totally made the 13 hr drive worth it. I can’t believe I even remember that much of it as I was pretty convinced leaving the studio that I blacked-out during the whole conversation! The rest of the show was amazing of course and I can not wait to go back again in the spring…fingers crossed!

    My honorable mention:

Spring of 08. Still cold in NYC. Fifth in line, but seated in the front row perfectly in front of Stephen’s desk. Before the warm up guy could even come out he had to tape a toss with Jon, and that was so incredibly hysterical I could’ve watched just those two talking all night.

When Stephen was really ready to tape, he came out and I got high-fives! Got his attention and asked him to take my patriotically-colored D20 die and roll it on his desk, but that I wanted it back. He said the die might have to go to the Smithsonian because Stephen was a national treasure now. He had it in his pocket for the entire taping and took it out twice to play with it between takes. Gave it back at the end. Now it resides in a special display case next to the dreidel I asked Jon Stewart to spin on his desk.

    Best episode EVER. ;)

I love reading this thread! Great idea DB!

I attended a taping with my sister on September 2, 2008. Never shall I forget that night! Still recovering a year later:)I’ve shared this story before, but here it is again:

I raised my hand to ask the final question and Stephen first said “Yes, sir” since he first saw one of his staff in the aisle right next to me raise his hand for some random reason. He laughed, quickly apologized to me and said “Yes, miss.” I’m not offended by miss when Stephen says it:) My question was not the most original, but I really wanted to ask it even though it had been asked at least once before.

Q: During the Philadelphia primary, you began singing “L-O-V-E” to Michelle Obama, but you were rudely interrupted and I wondered if you could finish the song for us tonight.

A: “L…is for the way you look tonight…” Stephen sang the entire song and looked straight at me for the first few bars before surprising the woman in front of me by suddenly putting his face right in front of hers. This must have been really something for her as she was the one person in the audience who had never even seen the show before! He then ended the song by bending backwards with arms outstretched and microphone in hand. Everyone clapped. Stephen Colbert sang a love song to me. I heard Stephen sing in person. Words cannot express…

I’ve been to four tapings, and each one had their special moment, but the first one stands out for one reason: Meta-free-phor-all!!

Second best moment, from a different taping: after screwing up the previous few tosses, Stephen and Jon start taping a toss where Stephen apologizes for all the screw-ups… but then screws it up, causing Jon to laugh hysterically. I mean, he got up out of his chair and started clapping while laughing so hard I didn’t think he was going to stop. Stephen’s reaction: *headdesk*.

Third best moment: Stephen says farewell to Bobby the stage manager while eating a plate of ribs that may or may not have been Bobby. And the whole show was one big running cannibal joke.

WOW! If that would have happened to me (the hot and wet part) I honestly might have fainted. That may be the best story I’ve heard yet.

By the way, I’m a Minnesota Twins fan so I’m definitely another Sox hater lol. They’re pretty much our biggest rivals. I drove from MN to New York and the worst part was going through Chicago….oh my lord with the traffic!!!

boy its been a while since I’ve been here [commenting], but everything looks the same, so that’s good.

    Here’s a selfish post:

I dont have a live taping experience, yet.

I am gonna be in NY for parts of September (maybe Oct), and I’ve been checking the tds and tcr ticket sites (I saw Aug 22 link open up once, but wrong date for me). Unfortunately, most of the time I’m there the shows are on vacation. But there is some overlap, so I’m keeping hopeful. I’ve read through a few of the comments here, and the site’s faq (which has a few dead links). From what I’ve read, waiting there at the studio is about my best chance. I prob will do that, has anyone else had success showing up for standby tix?

  25. I was in NYC originally to visit a graduate program, but when that didn’t pan out, I just had TCR AND TDS tapings. Nice fallback plan!

It was the 3/30 episode, one where they just came back from a break. Being from Florida, I was HATING the cold (which is sad, since I’m originally from Jersey), but I stuck through it for Stephen! I also hurt my feet really badly in Boston a few days before, so I had to wear lined Crocs so I could walk!

I, too, was fifth in line and got a front row seat (*squee!*), so I got high-fived on BOTH hands when Stephen did his little pass through the studio! And I got to ask a question (I’m still surprised I could speak): I told him I was a teacher, and I knew he had taught Sunday school. He said he hadn’t done so in a year (or something like that), but to “go on”. I said, “As a substitute teacher, I have trouble controlling my students. Do you have any advice for that?” He said, “Normally I threaten them with eternal damnation. ‘YOU WILL GO TO HELL…if you didn’t bring enough gum for the class!’”

I also got to see a toss between him and Jon, which was absolutely hilarious (of course). I’m really happy those two get along and still talk.

Before he started the show, Stephen started flinging WristStrong bracelets into the crowd, but I couldn’t catch any. I was sort of bummed until I saw Stephen put one on his wrist, think about it for a second, then take it off and shoot it RIGHT AT ME! It hit me in the right hip and he laughed, embarrassed, but I didn’t care (I’m such a fangirl, I hoped it left a bruise xD It didn’t!).

After the show Stephen came around and started shaking people’s hands. I thought he was just shaking the hands of the VIPs…until he shook mine! “Thanks for coming!” he said. Stupid me, all I could blurt out was, “Thank YOU!” Probably because I was so thrilled he was shaking MY hand and answered MY question and was talking to ME! My friends back home were (and still are) quite jealous!

Afterwards I waited – again, not used to the cold! – for Stephen with my new friends I met at the taping for a picture. I got one, but I’m behind him and look ridiculous xD All the more incentive to try again for a better one! (I’m starting grad school in January and hope to make it to another taping sometime soon, maybe during that spring break!)

I told my students before I left how I was going to see TDS and TCR, since they were asking why I would miss class. They knew who Jon Stewart was, but very VERY few knew Stephen! :( Oh well! They didn’t ask about my WristStrong, either, although one group said they knew someone who would want it and would try and take it from me! They can sure try! xD

(I included a link to my taping report, which is slightly more detailed, but the gist is the same.)
