We got some late-breaking news a few hours back about Stephen Colbert appearing on Stand Up! with Pete Dominick, the Sirius radio show hosted by Pete Dominick, who most of you know better as Stephen’s warm-up act before a live taping of the show.
He did his second interview with Pete this week, and you can now hear the audio on Pete’s website for the show. They talk about Iraq, and the Thunderbirds flight, and some very juicy bits about how different sketches come about. I loved the part where they talked about Formidable Opponent and “Stephen 2″.
You simply must listen, and make sure to talk about your favorite part in the comments! Also, if you Twitter, you can follow Pete at @petesbigmouth.

Just finished listening. I enjoyed hearing Stephen out of character.
Most interesting fract: learning how the StephenAtHome twitterings are developed (almost the end of the interview, sorry, don’t have the exact time).

I live for these kinds of interviews. Even if they’re not heavy on the jokes or anything, they satisfy the curiosity like no other.
I always wondered about the DADT Formidable Opponent, which was just about the balls-iest thing Stephen did while he was over at Iraq. I was like, “The generals must not be too happy about that one,” but I’m glad it still managed to go through to broadcast.

What an AMAZING interview. I loved that one of his bodyguards was from South Carolina. Also, I believe Stephen was closer to death after the Thunderbird segment than when in Iraq. Stephen, I’m so glad you’re alright!
Loved it when Pete Dominick began going on and on how great a boss Stephen is and how he brings out the best in his staff. Stephen is one of those rare celebrities who stays grounded after making it big…despite or maybe because of the character he plays four nights a week.
Oh, also loved hearing Pete Dominick’s observation of Stephen’s reactions during the Q&A when people ask Iraq.
Megan, thanks again for bringing this interview to the attention of NFZ!

Really great interview! It’s so endearing to hear Stephen speak out of character, especially during the moments where he sort of gets soft spoken. It was also oddly endearing to hear Stephen answer the phone. lol.

The best part was when his phone rang! lol…But what a great interview! I remember when I met Mark Malkoff a few months ago and he said how he would carry his love for Stephen to his grave! And everyone who works with him shares the same notion!

What a wonderful interview. It’s so rare that we get to hear Stephen as himself. I enjoyed sitting here picturing them in his office. This satisfied my curiosity on so many points. Thank you Pete, and thanks for posting this!

Loved the interview. I hope DB had ear plugs handy for the end though when Stephen was graphically describing the aftermath of the Thundercats stunt.

I like the way he took the opportunity to praise his staff, describing how he mentally walks through the building picturing them all and remembering their contributions. No wonder they love working for him.

OK I just listened to it again and I’m going to add that I like the bit where he talks about watching baseball with “my boys”. I wonder if he values the father-son relationship more because he lost his own father at such a young age…
