EPISODE NUMBER: 5112 (August 17, 2009)
GUEST: Bill McKibben
SEGMENTS: Obama writes an editorial for the New York Times, The WØRD: Must-Be TV, Even Better-er Know a District – Colorado’s Second (Jared Polis)
VIDEOS: Monday, August 17, 2009

Oh, it was so nice to get to sleep in last week! But it’s also nice to get to watch the show bright and early in the morning – nothing wakes you up like a piping hot cup of Colbert in the morning.

It’s good to see at least someone is holding the pundits accountable for their lies, especially when it’s the President holding them accountable. But Stephen does a good job of it as well. Stephen pointing out the fact that Fox News is creating the Teabagging and health care news that they are instigating was one of the more interesting WØRD segments I’ve seen in a while. Considering how much the public opinion is being shaped by both the Extreme Left and Extreme Right factions of the pundit industry, it makes me grateful that Jon and Stephen are around to keep tabs on them.

Yay for Even Better-er Know A District! Loved all of the eye-rolling by Polis. Maybe it’s because I do these guides before I have my coffee, but I just couldn’t get into the guest at all. While his topic, and his web site (350.org) are important, I just found him dry as all get out.

So what did you all like about the show? And did you laugh at the Jewish writer joke as hard as I did? See you in the comments!

  • Simply dishonest, Mr. President? Do you think it’s simple to convince people that you’re going around at night shooting blow darts at IV bags?
  • I remember the good old days when 2 times 29 really was 44!
  • People accused him of fearmongering, but keeping the public safe was his stated GOOOOOOOAL! [Actual Portuguese Pronunciation]
  • He needed that gun! Someone might have offered him dental coverage. [Wooden Teeth Good Enough For Washington!]
  • Rush Limbaugh, don’t just report that white men are being oppressed, replace yourself with a wise Latina. [¡Sarah Palinez!]
  • You have not tasted anybody’s teabag until you’ve had Boulder’s in your mouth.
  • According to my research, you ate nothing but Subway sandwiches for 5 years.
  • Loving men would be a breeze, because men know what men like. I understand, guys, okay? It’s easier to love something that’s like yourself, don’t you think?
  • You’re calling gay people narcissists? That’s pretty bold.
  • I’d be a huge feather in your cap right now, because I know you guys wear caps. That’s how I can tell people are gay is their feathery caps.

  1. Roland says:

This was the best BK-er-AD ever. Perhaps because its the first. But, it rivals the Bernie Sanders BKAD segment. Was absolutely wonderful and if I was gay I so would find tubby Polis attractive. He really did a great job of out colberting Colbert.

The 350.com guy was forgetable and did himself little good. I know the thing is that when you are a guest you are to play it straight, but my god—you don’t just repeat your talking points.

    • Mary says:

I cant find the bernie sanders BKAD on colbertnation – there is only an interview.

I would really like to see it. Could you provide a link?

“GOOOOOOOAL” had me cracking up so hard. B-er-KAD was great (and I loved the skiing and the big jump lol)! Also loved the recent StephenAtHome tweet: “can’t believe jared polis called me gay. ridiculous. In other news, totally fired up for project runway premiere this week!” hahah

Voting between the Word and B-erKAD was tough. Jared Polis’s interview was far more interesting than McKibben’s. However, I did go to the 350.org website, and there is a specific link for the Nation to use. One thing I appreciated about the site’s sign up is that the only required info is an email address.

Favorite lines: the Jewish writers, and the teabagging joke (talk about boulders!)

Wonder how long Stephen’s hair will be by the time the break’s over?

  4. Michele says:

Tough choice between The Word and BK-er-AD. I ended up choosing BK-er-AD simply because it was so funny. I would love to see the outtakes from that. The Word was great though too. And I agree that it’s good to see both Stephen and Jon skewering the pundits. Oh and I also laughed really hard at the Jewish writers joke. That was excellent!

I enjoyed the guest. Probably because I was interested in the topic. Yes, he was very dry but he did what guests are supposed to do. Stick with their subject.

  5. Tiger says:

wow, Jared Polis’s wikipedia page has already been updated to note that his name used to be different and the citation is last night’s BKAD. that’s crazy stuff. all I have to say is that wikipedia edits in light of Colbert comments have a history of trouble so I hope no one is going around editing in opinions about cocaine.

I voted for that segment, because I thought he did such a good job responding to Colbert without trying to be jokey. McKibben did the same thing though. I’ve read a lot by him, knew about 350.org, and he did stay very close to his message, which is great. by not being silly both of these guys made the comedy better, and I honestly felt like I became more informed.

that Jewish writers joke was so easy to anticipate, but still very satisfying when it paid off. :D

  6. O'Reilly says:

This segment, The Even Better-er Know a District, Colorado’s 2nd with Jarad Polis, is simply first rate. The context of Stephen’s “skiing” in Vale, plus all comments about the Celestial Tea Company, teabagging, and Boulder, Colorado leading into Stephen’s intro to Jared Polis as the first openly gay man to win a Congressional seat were just so delightfully irreverent and funny.

Stephen’s mistaking the Congressman for the Jared in Subway commercials as a ploy to imbed a commercial for Subway sandwiches is funny as an aside, since some programs are trying to do something similar these days because advertisers are aware that people do not bother with commercials when watching recorded shows. Stephen’s bonging a beer with Polis in response to Polis’ saying that going to Congress is like going back to college was good fun and worked really well for an interview with a Freshman Congressman, and Polis did seem to have a great time acting like a freshman again with Stephen. I did notice that Stephen got the Congressman to go first, like an upperclassman might purposely manage to do at school, even though Polis originally said he didn’t want to bong a beer with Stephen – quite funny.

The final scene, with Stephen back on skis starting an avalanche, “tidied up” (if that’s what one wants to say about an avalanche) and made the segment come full circle. So, in general, nothing but applause for this one – a really well written segment, and super well done, as always, by Stephen. What fun.

Going against the popular choice tonight and siding with The Word. I thought it was a particularly strong one with a lot of funny media criticism, which is what TDS/TCR really shine at (coincidentally, TDS did some media criticism tonight as well). Especially the part with the price of stamps “doubling,” hehe. I actually didn’t think BKAD tonight was as good as some of the other BKADs that Stephen has done before.

Oh, how I love that screencap DB! Thank you so much! I must say I voted for the BKAD segment primarily because Stephen was so darn cute skiing:)

  9. The Word was brilliant last night; I think this is what TCR and TDS are arguably best known for (media criticism, particularly during election season, when I first started seriously watching), so I’m quite partial to these kinds of segments. I enjoyed it a lot.

    Cute screencap! :)
