Stuff Journalists Like rates Jon Stewart #45
ByThis homage to the famous “Stuff White People Like” mentions Jon Stewart (and Stephen Colbert) in a most amusing light. While they do not attempt to conduct the “Jon v. Stephen” battle that so many other bloggers feel the need to engage in, they do touch on it towards the end.
Ask any respected journalists who their news anchor idols are and you’ll get reputable names like Cronkite, Murrow, Jennings, Koppel. Well, at least publicly. But ask any journalist who their favorite anchor is after a beer or two and you’re likely to hear one name. Jon Stewart.
…
While journalists typically try their hardest to avoid saying something stupid, inaccurate or idiotic but
ifwhen they do, they set their TiVos in hopes of catching their slip on one of the Daily Show’s news reels. While journalists’ adoration for Stewart is obvious, the opposite is even more so. Without journalists’ bumbles, mistakes and penchant for wanting to be Tasered, Stewart’s nightly 30 minutes would be filled with fart jokes and impressions of George Bush (not that that’s necessary a bad thing). Journalists are the straight man, the set up, and Jon Stewart is the punch line.On every journalist’s TiVo is bound to be episodes of 60 Minutes, 30 Rock and of course, The Daily Show with Jon Stewart. Stewart is one thing most journalists can agree on. The only thing they might argue over is who they like more – Stewart or his counterpart Stephen Colbert. Friendships, jobs and teeth have been lost over that battle.

FINALLY someone who doesn’t need to fuel the Jon Vs Stephen debate. I frankly, hate it. Jon and Stephen are great friends, and admire each other very much. Why can’t people leave it at that? Ofcourse some people will prefer one over the other, but the whole *fight* is way to stupid.

Yes! People need to stop comparing them. It IS stupid.
They go together like peanut butter and jelly. Or fake news and comedy. Take your pick.

Yes! Peanut butter and jelly! That’s why their shows are back-to-back. =)

Exactly! And they are always best when they are together. That’s pure comedy GOLD.

Or like Jimmy Dean’s pancake-wrapped sausage on a stick and baconnaise!

Some of the grammar in that article is questionable, but I’m amused by the sentiment. And Jon is a delight.

They make some good points about Jon, how he does tend to do more than the average journalist and how he’s not bound by ethics codes and the like. Very interesting.

I just found this elsewhere in the list:
#85 abbrvtns
… Also, most people don’t realize but copy editors are also the culprits behind celebrity couple names like Bennifer, Brangelina and the always popular Filliam H. Muffman*.
* Might have been created by the staff of The Colbert Report.

Great article. I especially liked this: “Journalists wish they had their own Camera 3.”
I bet they do wish that!

They saved the whole “Jon vs. Stephen” debate for Stephen’s entry–#46. In fact, the article basically just slammed Jon, from what I could tell. Consistency, anyone? Sorry, it’s just, they ARE like peanut butter and jelly and it felt like a slap in the face to read about how “great” they thought Jon was, turn around and say the exact opposite. It’s like, they commended Jon for his honesty where it has lacked in the “real” news media, and went and proved themselves right AGAIN.
Also, I don’t think TDS “needs” journalistic/political mistakes in order to have a show. They didn’t always have that format. Stupid things happen every day without the media’s help. It’s like the people who thought Jon and Stephen would be out of a job once Obama was inaugurated.
Sorry about the stupid rant, guys. *steps down*

Jebus Crisp, were they mean to Jon in the #46 clipping! Choosing Jon or Stephen over the other is like choosing between your two children: you just can’t do it! Like I’ve said in the past, gun to my head, I’d rather get the bullet than choose one or the other.

I also hate it when people try to compare the two or force you to “choose” who the best it. It doesn’t seem fair. They have completely different styles and formats that are meant to complement each other, not compete with each other. And when it comes to the interviews, I love Stephen’s quick barbs and satire, but I also love Jon’s obvious intelligence and curiosity, and his attempts to get the guests to go beyond their talking points and get to the core of the matter. There have been many times when Jon Stewart made me feel less alone in the world, and that should be valued.

Slightly off topic, but the only thing that I MIGHT like more than Jon and Stephen together is… Jon & Brian Williams: http://www.thedailyshow.com/watch/mon-july-20-2009/brian-williams
It’s segments like that that make me think Brian Williams got into the wrong profession.
I’m still awaiting the day BriWi will go on to TCR. Although he did have that brief segment during the WristStrong days, I still think a full interview is in order. He’s more than a good sport, he gets his own jabs in there too.

You hit the nail right on the head. Ya know what I also miss? “The Giant Head of Brian Williams” that TDS used to do. Like this one. I know they did others that were way funnier but I can’t seem to find them on the site.

Agreed, and for Ted Koppel as well:

Bob Wiltfong was a local news anchor before he became a Daily Show correspondent, so it’s not too late for Williams or Koppel. :)
