Eight of the categories that the Emmy awards ceremony traditionally broadcast on awards night are possibly going away on the prime time broadcast, being awarded earlier in the day and their acceptance being “time-shifted” with edits to the acceptance and nomination sections. According to the Hollywood Reporter, the reason behind moving these categories is to allow time for popular, but non-award winning programming, to be featured on the show.
The problem comes for the Colbert Nation when these not-so-important (?!) categories are defined. “Outstanding Directing For A Variety, Music Or Comedy Series” is possibly one of the awards to be time-shifted. This also happens to be one of the awards where both the ‘Colbert Report’ and ‘Daily Show’ are nominated:
- Outstanding Directing For A Variety, Music Or Comedy Series
- American Idol • Show 833 (The Final Three) • FOX • FremantleMedia N.A., Inc. & 19TV
Ltd.
Bruce Gowers, Director - The Colbert Report • 4159 • Comedy Central • Hello Doggie, Inc. with Busboy
Productions and Spartina Productions
Jim Hoskinson, Director - The Daily Show With Jon Stewart • 13107 • Comedy Central • Central Productions, LLC
Chuck O’Neil, Director - Late Show With David Letterman • Episode 2932 • CBS • Worldwide Pants Incorporated
Jerry Foley, Director - Real Time With Bill Maher • 705 • HBO • Bill Maher Productions and Brad Grey Television in association with HBO Entertainment
Hal Grant, Director - Saturday Night Live • Host: Justin Timberlake • NBC • SNL Studios in association with NBC Studios and Broadway Video
Don Roy King, Director
As always, we’re rooting for Jimmy, and while this time-shift will not affect the outcome, I’d love to see Stephen’s reaction if Jimmy wins this year. I’d also love to see Jon’s reaction if Chuck wins as well.
Here’s hoping that this controversy will end up resulting in more air time for the awards we, the Colbert Nation, want to see presented on the air. They’ve already dealt us a blow with deleting the “Old Men Beating Stephen Colbert” category, and taking away airtime for Jimmy’s nomination is just a kick in the shin after that.
Love the Doctor Who reference ;) Number Ten is my doctor! Woo!

Oh no no no. I really hope they won’t take it away. Jimmy and Chuck both deserve to win…

The Emmy will still be awarded, but it just won’t be awarded live. It’s annoying, though, that they find that as one of the categories that deserves to be demoted to the off-air awards.

Yeah. I feel that they should be shown on air. They deserve that.

Is it me or have the Emmys really messed up this year? Instead of dividing the award for outstanding performance in a variety show/special into two different categories (one for series [ahem, Stephen's award :) ] and one for one-time specials)they delete it and now this?!
How much time do they think can be saved? The categories they are pushing off the main broadcast seem to come, predominantly, from cable channels. To me, this is wrong. If the Emmys are highlighting the best of television–it shouldn’t matter if they are cable or broadcast basics. Notice none of the writing/directing for comedy series awards are being awarded before the ceremony because, in my opinion, 30 Rock and The Office dominate the nominees. To me, that is not fair. You can’t just “move” the drama categories and not the comedy ones, though I would prefer they not move any at all. The problem rests with the terrible hosting job done last year!
Ugh! I am ranting so I don’t know if it makes the most sense! I should qualify this be saying, these are my gut opinions and can not be backed by too many facts! Thanks for letting me vent. Back to work! :)

I have to agree — last year’s “hosting” (if you want to call it that) was beyond terrible. I was actually embarrassed for the Emmy people and whoever decided that letting Ryan Seacrest “riff” was a good idea.

Doctor Who reference!!! That made me happy.
The news, however, does not make me happy! That stinks that their TV time might be taken away. :( Nevertheless, here’s hoping that either Jimmy or Chuck takes home the Emmy! :D

Why are the Emmys being screwed up so much?

I wish I knew. I find it very odd that they want to make room for programming that’s popular but wasn’t nominated. What’s that all about?

I’m with you, Mary. What exactly does that mean – popular but not nominated. People like it, but the Academy is clueless? That sounds about right.
I’m miffed that they’re moving Jimmy or Chuck’s award to the “non-aired” time slot. Can the Emmy folks do anything right? (Notice I didn’t include any of the other nominees.) :-)
I’ll never get over totally getting rid of Best Performance in a Variety, Musical or whatever show. Stupid Emmy people!

Have the Emmy people thought about the fact that all these bad decisions could mean less air time for Stephen and Jon? And will that help their precious ratings! Quite the opposite! I hope we will still have another great Stephen/Jon appearance!
So unfair to first remove the host category and now put the director’s category off the air.
IMHO, what should be eliminated are the best guest star emmys – that’s a concept that I’d like to see go and I think no one would miss it. And anyone who’s won more than 3 times for playing the same character can be retired.
