Stephen Colbert in the Zeitgeist – August 1, 2009
By
Hey Zoners! I hope everyone is having a great weekend so far. Here’s a look at the Colbert news from around the Interwebs, your zeitgeist for August 1st (and how did it get to be August already?).
MOVITS!
The huge Colbert bump MOVITS! got as a result of their TCR appearance on Monday is really paying off, as Stephen himself demonstrated in Thursday night’s Tip/Wag. For those of you who still have the extremely catchy “Fel Del Av Gården” stuck in your head, like I do, Äppelknyckarjazz is now available from iTunes in the U.S. And for those of you in or near New York City looking for something to do at midnight tonight, the band is doing a free show at The Bell House. I know it’s extremely short notice, but if you can get yourselves down there, it should be a good time.
White House Beer Summit ‘09
- Comics find something to laugh about with Gates – Associated Press
“Late-night comics found a few things to laugh about in the racially charged arrest of a Harvard professor — once beer was added to the equation… Comedy Central’s Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert were quicker to the story last week, but talked around the edges… Colbert noted that police had dropped charges on Gates even though ‘he committed the perfect crime, robbing his own home. Think about it. He knew exactly when he wouldn’t be home.’”
- The Moment is Beer – Time magazine’s Swampland blog
“It’s still too early to say what will happen, but the whole orchestration calls to mind the wise observation of Stephen Colbert at the 2006 White House Correspondent’s Association Dinner: ‘No matter what happens to America, she will always rebound — with the most powerfully staged photo ops in the world.’”
Stephen vs. the Birthers
- Colbert vs. Crazy: Stephen Takes On ‘Birther’ Movement – Huffington Post
“While Stephen Colbert the person may find the birther movement morally reprehensible, Stephen Colbert the character embraces it wholeheartedly. That’s why, despite his obvious distaste for guest Orly Taitz, he spent the better part of last night’s show “defending” the conspiracy theorists… Colbert broke down last night and gave this group the acknowledgment they deserve by allowing his viewers into the Colbert birthing chamber… and talking to Ms. Taitz about her bat-sh*t crazy theories.”
- Claims Barack Obama not born in U.S. live on – The Toronto Star
“The Birthers saga reached an absurd apex this week on Comedy Central’s Colbert Report, when mock-conservative host Stephen Colbert gushed over the movement’s self-appointed matriarch, oddball California lawyer/dentist/realtor Orly Taitz, vowing to champion her cause… Colbert demanded that witnesses come forward to resolve the Obama birth question, Kenya or Hawaii, once and for all. ‘If you were one of the sperm watching at home, call my studio,” he said. “What do you remember hearing at the time, ukulele music or tribal drums?’”
“One of the bravest moments in comedy”
In an interview with TV Squad’s Joel Keller at aTelevision Critics Association panel earlier this week, Robin Williams briefly discussed his reaction to Stephen’s WHCD speech. The interview is in the short sound file posted at the end of the article; I don’t have the technical know-how to post the file here, but here’s a small snippet from the relevant part of the discussion:
- Robin Williams: You want to know the bravest moment of comedy recently? It was him performing at the White House press dinner. Watching that was the greatest thing, because all of a sudden you realize, they must have hired him thinking he’s a real conservative, and no one went [whispers] “He’s joking. It’s a satire.”
Be forewarned, this being Robin Williams, there’s one f-bomb that makes this NSFW. But how great is it to hear someone of Williams’ stature praise Stephen for his work?
- Is the Reddit Alien Stealing Stephen Colbert’s Look – Comedy Central’s Indecision blog
“…[Y]ou might have noticed that the Reddit alien recently got a makeover. And can’t put my finger on it, but he reminds me of someone America-y… (Why yes, he does look a tiny bit familiar…)

What a great sound bite from Robin Williams. Firstly, I can never hear enough gushing about the WHCD speech, and secondly, it’s Robin Williams!
