EPISODE NUMBER: 5103 (July 30, 2009)
GUESTS: Kathryn Bigelow
SEGMENTS: Beer Summit, Stephen Colbert’s MeTunes, Tip of the Hat, Wag of the Finger
VIDEOS: Thursday, July 30, 2009
Yay, more Frank! I still think the MeTunes intro is one of my very favorite intro graphics ever. I have to admit, though, that I hadn’t heard one of the songs that he selected as “Song of the Summer”. It may be because I refuse to listen to stations that feature songs that all use Auto Tunes. Yes, I’m old, don’t judge me. I tend to listen to my iPhone iTunes a lot (including a whole playlist of Stephen songs), and if I do listen to the radio, I listen to “Jack FM” or other stations that feature 80′s, 90′s and Today music. Of course, by “Today” they mean songs that don’t have Auto Tune in them.
I can tell your right now, my song of the summer is definitely Fel Del Av Garden. I haven’t been able to get it out of my head for days. I still haven’t made it over to Amazon to purchase the album yet, but it’s on my To Do’s for this week. I had to turn to my co-worker yesterday and say, “Help me! I have a song stuck in my head, but it’s in Swedish, and I don’t know the words so I’m just humming the melody in my head and it’s driving me crazy!”
Stephen was so amazingly self-referential in tonight’s Tip/Wag. I hope he keeps pimping Movits!, because I’m not quite as sick of them yet as he is. When I saw Tucker Carlson on the screen, I knew there was going to be a good slam on him. And Fatherf@#ker was a pretty darn good one.
One last thing: What kind of a Yankee builds a taco like that? Everyone knows that it’s meat, then cheese, then lettuce. Lettuce on bottom – huh? Maybe it was to keep it from all falling out when he took a bite. It was Hollywood camara-ready style, maybe?
How did all of you enjoy the show tonight?
- I consider being sober a pre-existing condition. But I have a prescription for that.
- Nothing says unity like three men sitting down together and insisting on three different brands of beer.
- Actually he chose Bud, but he caved to Republicans who insisted he water it down.
- Foreign beers?! They should have had American beers. Thank you one person who said Ooh. Who wouldn’t be willing to put aside their racial prejudices over a tall, frosty bottle of Alabama’s own Klu Klux Klager.
- Beer before liquor, racial tension’s thicker, liquor before beer, let’s go take a crap on Biden’s lawn.
- The Black Eyed Peas clearly know their audience – Bar Mitzvahs DJ’s.
- Peas, please!
- Next up, the new hot jam from the artist whose name from the looks of it is Jeremih. He generates a lot more excitement than fellow R&B crooner, Jeremeh.
- Yes, Birthday Sex. Brilliant. The easiest way to make a song popular is to make the title two things everyone loves, in this case birthday and sex. It could have easily been titled Ferarri Snow Day or Cupcake Reacharound.
- I’m talking about the song, actual birthday sex gets 5 Me’s.
- You can’t call every time shorty starts a fire on the dance floor. If there is a fire on the dance floor, put it out with the Sprinkler. I’ve got disco elbow.
- From now on, instead of calling people who are too assertive and irritable “Bitchy”, we’ll call them “Teste”. And how come only women get to be described as sluts? Have you seen the way I put out for my sponsors? I am a total whore. And what about motherf@#ker? Sorry, ladies, from now on Tucker Carlson is a Fatherf@#ker.
- How I Met Your Movits!
- I’m telling you folks, by Christmas you won’t be able to swing a cat without putting a bowtie and stupid glasses on it.
- Don’t worry, in movies you can always outrun the fireball.
- I’m just saying, you want to put asses in the seats, a Decepticon or two wouldn’t be a bad idea.

I am torn between “Me Tunes” and “Tip/Wag” but am leaning towards MeTunes. MeTunes included desk dancing (the sprinkler), a minor character break while looking at the “Jeremeh” graphic, and random pointing at someone in the audience with an adlib to “write that down” re: birthday sex being given 5 me’s!! (Wonder who that was? Anyone at the taping?!)

Wow, it’s like you read my mind. All of your favorite parts were mine too. ; )

Yes. Who was he looking at when he said “write that down” regarding birthday sex?! Hmmm…maybe someone during the Q&A had an interesting question….or had said their birthday was the same as Stephen’s. Haha. Oh, how I wish someone was at the taping to reveal this inside joke!
Shout Out (Hey!):

All my favorite bits, too! I don’t think that was a random ad-lib, you could see him leaning around the camera to look at someone in particular.
Shout Out (Hey!):

You’re right! It was random to me, in that I didn’t expect it–but isn’t that what an adlib is anyways?! Ugh-redundancy! :) Glad it is Friday!

In reference to the “write that down”, I assumed Mrs. C was in the audience last night.
Shout Out (Hey!):

Good call! I don’t know why I didn’t think of that. I assumed it had something to do with a pre-show comment!
Shout Out (Hey!):

That was my thought, too,

I also assumed it was his wife in the audience, also because he briefly mentioned her during the interview as well (which seemed really short by the way!?) Great Episode overall =D
Shout Out (Hey!):

Yep, his wife was in the audience. I was at the taping, it was an amazing show, and I’m now Stephen Colberts official German friend btw :D

I knew it would be a great episode when it began with some Frank eye candy. MeTunes was my favorite segment overall, and the character break and “write that down” sent it into “5-Me’s” territory. I’ll admit, I was hoping to hear a sampling of “Jeremeh’s” music.
“Actually, he chose Bud, but he caved to the Republicans who insisted he water it down” was my favorite line of the night. Ow!
I wish Kathryn Bigelow’s interview was longer, or maybe on another episode. It seemed like her time was shortened to make room for Gidget’s tribute (which was funny, btw)

Found your blog whilst trying to find the full quotation involving “cupcake reacharound” hahahahah … I laughed for like a year when he said that.

Welcome to the NFZ, Jamie!

my job is to gather & analyze music chart data. my joy is stephen colbert. so when i watched him saying many of the exact same things i have said in my office (we don’t know how to pronounce jeremih either), my mind was blown.
meTunes FTW.

I was also really torn between MeTunes and Tip/Wag. They were both so funny and I love a good character break. I also had never heard those songs. Then again, I mostly listen to my CDs. If I’m listening to the radio it’s usually NPR.
I enjoyed the interview with Kathryn Bigelow and really want to see “The Hurt Locker”.
I’ll be at the show on Monday. Anyone else from here going that day by any chance?
Shout Out (Hey!):

Oh, so envious! Have a great time on Monday.

Thanks jentaps! This will be my second time there. The husband and I fly out tomorrow morning and are spending a few days in NYC for our first kid-free vacation. :-)

Birthday sex hmmm, was Evie in the audience? Jeremeh break was too funny and loved the Me tunes — I can’t get enough of those cd covers.

A quick correction, if you don’t mind: Movits are from Sweden, not Finland, and thus they speak Swedish, not Finnish. As a Finn I can tell you, the difference is a significant one. ;) Also loved MeTunes, by the way.

My bad – I write these guides at 6:30a, and sometimes I’m a bit out of it. Fixed now.
And I’m glad you like the show! I hope you’ll stick around and talk to us fans here at No Fact Zone more often!
Shout Out (Hey!):

Thanks, I’ll certainly do that. From what I’ve seen so far, seems like a very nice place, this site. What with it being about Stephen, and all…

Have I got double vision or was Stephen wearing 2 Wrist Strong braclets tonight?
I loved that everyone started cheering when Waterloo came on and as always nothing beats a character break!!
Shout Out (Hey!):

I noticed that too, during the interview. I don’t know if he was wearing them the whole show or not.
Shout Out (Hey!):

I saw that as well. Kathryn Bigelow was also wearing one.

I totally agree with DB’s comment about those songs, and I’m not even old! The only thing I like Auto-Tuned are the news. Which reminds me – I do believe it’s not “shorty”, but “shawty”. See, I already know too much about these things.
That sprinkler looks fun and easy enough that I might give it a try, at a proper time.

Where in the World is Gigot?
”In 1997 … Gigot single-handedly renewed interest in Chihuahua stereotypes.” Clips that follow are from Oliver and Company, Lady and the Tramp, and Beverly Hills Chihuahua to prove Stephen’s original statement that “many Americans have forgotten our long, proud history of animals portraying minority stereotypes.”
But he also suggests that we now have entered a new age and have bade the old one a fond farewell with the passing of the great Latin American icon Gigot and the Senate Judiciary Committee’s approval ot Sotomayor on Tuesday, both occurring in our present post racial world.
This “at the bookcase” tribute to Taco Bell’s Gigot, paralleled with the Senate Judiciary Committee’s vote on the Sotomayor appointment and the statement that nobody judged Sotomayor on her skin color, but on how she judged them on the color of THEIR skin is so clever. The conclusion in both situations – everything is different now: “We’ve come so far,” with the absurdity reaching its height in Stephen’s eating his taco while saying, “Gigot, I’m sure you’re in a better place … (gulping down a bite) my mouth.” So outrageous and funny, a great ending to take us all into the weekend.

Note: Wherever you see “Gigot” pretend you see “Gidget.” It is very, very late after a very, very, very long day (shhh – sounds good as an excuse, don’t you think?). Nite, nite everyone.

took me long enough to comment, I think…I watched the show at 11:30 PM, even! I really liked me-tunes. it kept making me LOL. I always like that segment, so I was pleased to hear it announced. I didn’t get that that Black Eyed Peas song was by them…like, I knew the song, I knew they had a hit, but I didn’t put it together. I do listen to Top 40 radio, but it usually takes me a while to figure out what I’m listening to!
I still love that Movits! song. soooo catchy. I downloaded it from Amazon. I am not knowledgeable about that type of music but you can’t deny a cool tune.

I loved the show. Totally fun episode. Mrs. C in the audience. That was so cute when he looked at her re: birthday sex. Love Me Tunes and Tip/Wag. I also enjoyed the interview.
I just downloaded Movits, and can’t wait to listen to all the songs. The one they did on the show is so catchy. Makes me want to dance.

I was wondering who he said, “Write that down,” to. That’s so hilarious.

Haha, I don’t know why that struck me as funny.

Oh my! Supremely cute taping report from Thursday’s show here. There were evidently a few smile-inducing exchanges between Stephen and his wife before and during the show, as well as a reference to Stephen’s “Thunderbirds” experience that just makes me want to send him virtual hugs. The things he does to support the troops and keep us laughing …

Oh, MsI. This taping report deserves its own post, don’t you think?! I’m afraid some Zoners might miss this story!

Just a quick note, I was in Newfoundland all week, where TCR is on at 1:00 am and then at 11 am and 5 pm the next day and the shows were great. I did not know, however that Evie was at the Thursday show! How cute. I will say that I loved the Movitz followup since I could not get them out of my head for quite awhile! And Stephen giving himself both a tip and a wag was priceless!
