Klassic Kolbert: OMG! Space!

Good morning, everyone. I meant to post this yesterday for the anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing, but real life sort of sandbagged me and I didn’t have time to get it on the site. I trust you’ll forgive me when you start watching these clips of Stephen Colbert interviewing astronauts and basically geeking out over the space program, though; his excitement is infectious and, I think, a perfect way to celebrate some of NASA’s greatest men and women.
I’m really torn as to which of the following clips is my favorite, but I’ll start with this interview with Jim Lovell.

If you guys haven’t watched In the Shadow of the Moon yet, I highly recommend it. It’s very funny and informative, and it really gives you a sense of just who these individuals were, these remarkable astronauts who traveled behind the moon.

Doing that corny thing where I’m commenting on my own post, but …

Ms I, thank you for those clips, especially Lovell, Aldrin, and (OMG! SPACE!) Reisman. The expressions on Stephen’s and Garrett’s faces during the shuttle interview were a priceless delight.
“Eat it, Jon Stewart! I’m talkin’ to SPACE!”

Glad you liked it. Did you ever read The Onion’s take on the moon landing? The “OMG! Space!” caption had the same “I cannot BELIEVE how cool this is!” feel as that did. (Warning: The Onion is, as might be expected, somewhat more expletive-laden than what we put on this site.)

Ms I, I saw In the Shadow of the Moon twice in theatres and own it on DVD. I loved Michael Collins who had a great sense of humor and deserved more attention despite not actually landing on the moon during the Apollo 11 mission.
Oh, how I love how Stephen turns into a little boy when it comes to space. So cute! Can you imagine how cute he would have been as a little boy watching the moon landing in 1969?

Michael Collins absolutely deserved more attention than he’s gotten. He wrote a fantastic book back in the mid-70’s about his experiences as an astronaut, called Carrying the Fire, which is one of my favorite books ever. He was signing it at the Air and Space Museum in DC on Sunday, and it was a thrill to meet him. Buzz Aldrin and Al Bean (from Apollo 12) were also signing their books, and I got to meet them as well. It took 4 1/2 hours to get through the line but it was worth it!
And the “OMG! Space!” interview is one of my favorites. Stephen’s excitement is priceless.

Thanks for posting these, Ms I! I absolutely love the interview with Garrett Reisman actually in space, Stephen gets SO excited and it’s the most adorable thing I’ve ever seen. :)
