Hello Zoners! In my search for today’s featured episode at ColbertNation.com, I stumbled over the Word: I am the Great and Powerful Oz. After laughing myself to tears over how true his indictment over my state’s educational system is, and seeing that this episode also featured the Better Know A District with Representative Brad Sherman, aka the porn BKAD, I knew I had today’s Klassic Kolbert. So without further ado, I give you quotes and videos behind the cut! Enjoy!
Some notable quotes:
- I’ve got some advice. I lived in Chicago for 11 years. Once you get there, do yourself a favor and head to the Wienner Circle at Clark and Wrightwood. Get yourself a Francheesey. That’s a Polish sausage, sliced open, filled with cheddar cheese, wrapped in bacon, then they drop the whole kit-n-kaboodle in a deep fat fryer. Jen, you eat one of those every day, you won’t just feel like you’re from Chicago – you’ll look like you’re from Chicago. *Editor’s Note: Ugh. Just hearing that makes me want to throw up.*
- Have you ever seen a naked woman?
- Rep. Sherman: Of course.
- Stephen: OK, great. What was the name of the movie?
- On a related issue, what was the name of your first pet?
- Rep. Sherman: My dog Sandy.
- Stephen: Sandy? And what was the name of the first street you grew up on?
- Rep. Sherman: That would have been Keller.
- Stephen: So your porn name would be Sandy Keller. My porn name would be Caesar Honeybee.
- Rep. Sherman: Why would I want a porn name?
- Stephen: Because you don’t want to be doing porn as Congressman Sherman – that would be terrible for your career.
- I feel for these teachers. We all know how hard it is to get anyone to listen to you when you’re talking to a room full of smart alecs. [Like Helen Thomas]
- Look at Bill O’Reilly. [And Turn to Stone]
- I just think the suit and no tie – you don’t look casual, you look drunk. Are you drunk right now?
- High level sectarian tension – that has a poetry to it, Dan. I think Lincoln said it: “Now we are engaged in a great high level sectarian tension.”

thanks for picking an oldie! I love the show now, but sometimes I miss the old episodes (2005, 2006) when the character was played a bit heavier (if that’s a correct word for it). And this was an absolute classic – the character break as he’s introducing the BKAD and leaves out the telling detail for the joke; that wonderful word; the classic interview which really shows off Stephen’s style; and the great list of North Side Chicago hot dog stands (including my favorite underneath the Belmont El station!).
The mention of Bill-zero’s “Peabody” … um… I mean “Polk” reminded me of Crooks and Liars recent post showing a clip of Papa Bear predicting doom for America now that Frankin is in the Senate. And why so much love loss for Fankin? The 2nd clip on the post shows Frankin explaining Bill’s mistake to an audience and Bill himself.

Out of ignorance and curiosity, I googled Polk and O’Reilly. Here’s the link: http://www.fair.org/index.php?page=1070
The best tidbit of truthiness was this: “Inside Edition won a Polk Award, not the better-known Peabody, for reporting that was done after O’Reilly left the show–Washington Post, 3/1/01.”
“And Turn to Stone,” indeed!

LadyNocturne, thanks for the episode. I didn’t begin watching till 2008, so I’d never seen this episode. The Word was so brilliant, I watched it twice.

I love that the congressman asked why he needed a porn name! how practical of him!
it’s nice to see other commenters who are new to the show, juice! and veterans like Jennie reminding us how the show used to be different is useful. :)

Being from Chicago, I’m partial to Gold Coast Dogs myself. They have a great veggie burger (and an outlet at Midway Airport!). It doesn’t have to be all about pork and beef. ;)
The rest of what Stephen said about the cold and wind is true; sometimes even in summer. I hear it’s been unpleasantly chilly much of this season. My condolences!

Great episode! And it’s sad because the audience wasn’t the best that night.
Now I want a hotdog.
