Good morning Zoners! I hope everyone had a lovely July 4th yesterday. Today’s brunch is a simple one – PB&J, with a glass of milk. I’ve got a ton of activities planned for today, and I need all the time I can get!
First, a little bit of a recap of WordCamp Dallas 2009 last weekend. It was amazing, as I knew it would be. My presentation on Authority went very well – thanks for those of you who watched it on UStream (courtesy of local Video blogging celebrity Cali Lewis). The video still isn’t edited and posted, but if you’d like to see what I talked about, my buddy Charles McKeever blogged about it over at his blog, Open Source Marketer. I also got to spend lots of time with my WordPress rock star buddies Lorelle VanFossen, Liz Strauss, and Jonathan Bailey, and made a couple of new friends – Dave Moyer and Erica O’Grady, among them. I’ve got some great ideas about how to redo a few things on the site, and I can’t wait to start playing with the ideas here.
Another thing I’ve been inspired to do recently is to help our Colbert University guru, Lisa, do a bit of a redesign on Colbert U. For what we have in mind, we might need some help, so if anyone would like to help contribute to the overhaul, please e-mail me (see Contact link above) and we can see what can be done.
One final thing – my interview with Mark Malkoff is this afternoon, so if you have any questions you’d like him to answer, go over to the Mark on Air Tran post we did a few days ago and make sure to put your questions in the comment section of the post.
Now, here’s my question to all you Zoners for this week:
What kinds of things do you like to do to occupy your fandom time when the ‘Colbert Report’ is dark?
We have a whole week with no shows coming up, so what kinds of things might you like to see on the site? And what do you do with your personal time when you have that 30 minutes free every day? Can’t wait to hear from you!
Fun question! To be honest…when the show is on vacation- I tend to get more work done!! :) I just assume there won’t be as much news out there regarding the show or guests so I don’t check as often. Not checking means a page or two more of rewrites and revisions for my dissertation proposal or reading more journals/articles! I do, when I am looking for a fun distraction look up old videos I may have missed or have forgotten about at The Daily Show or ColbertNation. I love that recently, those sites have been posting mash-ups and behind the scenes themselves so that has been nice!
In terms of what I would like to see here, I just look for the same, fun, and consistently entertaining posts: Klassic Kolbert, The Book Club (even if I can’t always participate), Zeitgeist, Six Degrees, Interviews, links to Colbert U., etc.
Perhaps we may want to celebrate Christmas in July and rewatch A Colbert Christmas! (I think of that because I was listening to my ipod the other day and in the middle of my workout “Can I Interest You in Hannukah?” played and I almost chuckled myself right off the treadmill! It definitely caught me off guard.) Oh! I also have not had the opportunity to visit the chatrooms when they were running…maybe another one of those would be nice to connect with everyone here!
I just love what you and the completists do here–so whatever more you are willing to do is just an added bonus!

I went on holiday last week, so I’m a whole week behind on TCR. My plan was to watch one a day this week so I wouldn’t even notice the break!, but I’m too inpatient so I’ve already watched two episodes today :-S
I tend to replace the lack of shows with plenty of youtube time :-)
I love the klassic kolbert bits that you do, they usually keep me occupied :-)

My breaks usually consist of fanart and rewatching old eps I saved on Tivo. With better internet all around Ill be able to take a better look at the Klassic Kolberts now. I agree with luvtcr that we should have another chat room session because Ive always just missed them. Since i have an iPhone now I can catch them even if I’m not home.

I agree, this is a good question! Well, when ‘The Colbert Report’ goes dark, I like to go through the archives for fan favorite clips that I haven’t seen for some reason or another and dig them out to watch. I especially like going through Stephen’s ‘Daily Show’ segments – there were some really great ones. So, I guess I’d like to see more Klassic Kolbert segments around here – you guys have brought some really fun videos to my attention!
In other news – I’m really looking forward to The Rachel Maddow Show this week because she was on vacation last week and she comes back on Monday! :)

I am more productive when TDS and TCR are on vacation, but I usually enjoy looking for old clips of Stephen on The Daily Show since I didn’t start watching him until TCR aired.
Since this is summer time, maybe you could show a summer-y Klassic Kolbert each night this week. For example, I love the TDS segment when he goes down to Louisiana, goes to a daquiri drive-thru window and flirts with the girl!

I usually get more work done – or at least I attempt to work!
Somehow I manage to watch favorite episides or segments I’ve saved on iTunes. What might I enjoy? The verbal Shakespearean duel with Stephen Greenblatt (I love Stephen’s “Yeah, don’t f*** with me, man!”); the duet with Marsalis, actually, most of the music episodes; anything surrounding the election/inauguration; the Iraq experience, including ‘The Kiss!’ Then I might visit the Colbertnation archives for some of my favorite clips: any of the character breaks, for example. However, my favorite episode overall is probably the Strike episode.
Having said that, luvtcr’s idea to watch A Colbert Christmas is great – Christmas in July!
I’d like to read Wigfield, but can’t find it yet.
Re WordCamp Dallas: I got to see the last 10 minutes of Dave Moyer – what a prodigy! Glad you had a wonderful time, DB.

I start another summer school class tomorrow, so it will be nice to ease in homework-wise. I’ll also probably watch more episodes of a show called Peep Show (from the UK, so have to watch old eps on youtube) that really makes me laugh. I have kind of fallen off TDS for the past few weeks, so I will try to watch at least the highlights, like Jason Jones in Iran!
the aspect of Colbert fandom (besides the shows) that I like best is interviews. I just love reading or listening what Stephen and people related to the show have to about the show, comedy, politics, any of it. there’s something about “in their own words” that makes it fascinating.
ones that are from right after the show came on the air are especially interesting, because they’re reflecting on such a narrow amount of time, and looking forward with uncertainty to a future that we now know is very bright. or even better– from when Stephen was with TDS–once he was worried he’s only be known as the guy who laughed with a banana! totally not even a problem anymore!
anyway, a nice post could be a roundup of great old interviews with Stephen, either ones with unique questions, or just good comprehensive ones, or ones that are kind of historical, either because they were about a certain part of the show from the past (running for President) or they’re just older. I don’t know if this has been done in the past, but it certainly hasn’t been done for a while.

I might finally get to finish reading the teacher’s edition of America The Book. After a few minutes of digging around and inhaling dust, I found it buried under a pile of cookbooks at a bookstore that sells secondhand/previously owned books. I immediately grabbed it and went straight to the cashier to pay for my find, my birthday present to myself :) I was able to find lots of awesome books from digging around the shelves (The Reader, The Hours, and Little Children). I was even able to complete Armistead Maupin’s now hard-to-find Tales of the City series.

Colbert Univ. is a great site too. It complements The Report in a wonderful way. I particularly like reading anything that attempts to deconstruct Stephen’s performance. What he does and how he does it. So fascinating.

This is how my rerun week usually breaks down:
Thursday night, 11:59 PM: Cry.
Friday: Update Facebook and Twitter to remind everyone of how angry and mournful I am that next week is the dreaded rerun week.
Saturday-Sunday: Cry.
Monday-Wednesday: Pop in my Strangers with Candy DVD and watch every episode, then turn around and watch the episodes with commentary. Wish they all had commentary.
Thursday: Watch every Exit 57 skit, revisiting my favorites multiple times (Bottomless Lake, My Wife Left Me, and Down in the Basement)
Friday: Head over to LJ and giggle and blush.
Saturday: Cozy up with the SWC movie, or perhaps A Colbert Christmas with my brother.
Sunday: Stare at the clock.
Monday: Dance. Update Facebook and Twitter to remind everyone of how excited and happy I am that “He” is coming back tonight.
Monday night, 11:30 PM: Watch my personal hero as he pulls off a strong enough show to make up for the fact that he was gone the week before. His break was obviously a good one, because he seems rested, rejuvenated, and…is that an extra centimeter of hair I detect??

Do you think you could repost classic election videos? I remember watching an interview that made me fall in love with Colbert, because it was so brilliant – it was the one about the lady that argued whether Obama really should be classified as “black” and Colbert just twisted her logic inside out in a huge, hilarious roast.
Unfortunately, I don’t actually know what clip that is, so I would be happy to see it again on Nofactzone XD

I rented the Indecision 2004 DVD from my library and that’s tiding me over for at least a few days. I was finally able to see that beautiful scene where Jon and Stephen share the pizza. Oh, and I especially loved “Requiem for a Show That Was Daily” hosted by Stephen.

On the bonus disc, you can select the actual election night coverage (bottom left, I believe), and it’s in the intro scene where they recap the 2000 election. I’ve always wanted to see that, so I was pretty excited.

Oh thank you! I thought the scene would be a little bit longer, but it was long enough! I love it when a guy is wearing a dress shirt with rolled-up sleeves and a loose tie. I find that incredibly sexy! Unless, of course, it’s a politician at a town hall;)
