The Daily Show Toss Recap, week of 6/29/09

By nerdygirl on July 3rd, 2009 ·

Before we go, let’s check in with our good friend Stephen Colbert of The Colbert Report…

Greetings, Zoners, and happy Independence Day to our American Zoners (a day early). This week in Tosses, we revisited a rather familiar theme — Jon wants to do the Toss, but Stephen is too busy:

Daily/Colbert – Stephen Is Busy: Stephen can’t talk to Jon because he’s going through a tunnel and trapped in a mineshaft.

Love that screengrab.

This is a variation on a familiar theme — Jon wants to do the Toss but Stephen’s too busy, or makes excuses. We’ve seen this angle as recently as May (Stephen’s Busy). There’s also this fun one from 11/17/2008, in which Jon tries to do the Toss, but Stephen’s trying to eat dinner (“Take me off your list!”). And one last reference to a classic: Just a Quickie — Jon wants to do the Toss, but Stephen’s not in the mood. He has a headache.

How did everyone like this week’s Toss?

A Toss is always fun, and I like this running theme of Stephen being too busy, lolz. Nothing will ever be better than the ‘Just a Quickie’ Toss. I don’t know how they could top that, honestly.

“Just a Quickie” is one of my favorites, too.

There has been a running gag of “Stephen’s too Busy for Jon,” hasn’t there? Seems like one of these days it’s going to reach a (sorry – couldn’t resist!) climax.

You’re welcome, but I must thank nerdygirl for the perfect set-up.

I read in some taping report somewhere that one of the questions Stephen was once asked was how they determine when to do a toss. Stephen’s answer was that in part it depends on whether there is time after TDS or if the TDS interview runs long then they can’t squeeze a toss in and have to cancel it. So, I think a subtle aspect of the recurring theme is that it’s perhaps a bit of an inside joke that it probably depends more on if Jon leaves time for it than if Stephen is the one who is “too busy” or “not in the mood”. Anyway, I thought the toss last night was a bit weak, but a weak toss is still more delightful than about 99 % of anything else on TV.

I agree that a Toss is always fun, whether or not Stephen is too busy or Jon starts to crack up and never really finish it or they pull it off successfully.

I agree that a Toss is always fun, whether or not everything goes according to plan.

I also liked it when Stephen did a reverse toss, and when he introduced Jon as his “tolerable co-worker.” :)

I think this year’s best tosses have been the Superbowl (why are Romans numeraling our bowls?) and of course the Keyboard Cat toss. I nearly died laughing over the cat one. But it’s interesting to find out the origin of Stephen being “too busy.” Thanks armillariella!
