epguideiconEPISODE NUMBER: 5089 (June 30, 2009)
GUEST: Alexi Lalas, Kevin Mattson
SEGMENTS: War on the 4th of July, Is it time to care about soccer?
VIDEOS: Tuesday, June 30, 2009

Just a quick reminder to the Zoners – let’s do our best to keep our Episode Guide comments on-topic. We only have one thread to discuss each show, and I think the conversation flows better when the comments stay focused on the show at hand. Thanks for helping us keep this blog both shiny and happy!

Did you see that teeny, tiny swish of hair on the top of Stephen’s hair? IT’S GROWING, Y’ALL! How exciting! But not nearly as exciting as Al Franken finally being allowed to be Senator! Whoo!!! I’m all about the callback on the show, and I laughed quite hard at the War On Easter Fourth of July recycled graphic. Another recycled joke that I loved was the “you can grate cheese on that” – how many of us remember that line being used to describe Brad Pitt’s abs?

Kevin Mattson was really starting to freak me out – he’s so Will Forte in 15 years. I do admire him for sticking to his talking points despite the fact that Stephen was very “Stephen” tonight.

What kind of love did you have for the show tonight?

  • Yes, I also express sadness through cheering and applause. It’s like my left hand is Al Franken and my right hand keeps slapping him.
  • Plus who can trust the court’s ruling so soon after the death of Michael Jackson?
  • What a f@#king a$$hole.
  • I feel like we’re rolling the dice here having an untested guy in the US Senate, when remember, people, we are still fighting two wars – the war on Christmas, and the war on Easter.
  • War on the 4th of July – We didn’t have time to do a new graphic, but a gun-toting Jesus is appropriate for any occasion. Because everyone knows in 1776, Jesus joined the Continental Congress representing the colony of Heaven-sylvania and signed the Declaration of Independence. Then he pulled Washington across the Delaware and ascended into the sky in a beautiful explosion of color.
  • I say an abandoned gas plant is a perfect place to shoot off fireworks. The pyrotechnics could last for weeks.
  • These animals should thank us for liberating them from the British. If we hadn’t, all nature documentaries would look like this [Benny Hill theme].
  • Normally, I wouldn’t think twice about this sport, but that is before we were good at it.
  • By the way, Spain is expected to make a full recovery.
  • Soccer is so engrained into Brazilian culture that you can’t even be born without getting past a goalie.
  • How long have I been asleep? Do I have a beard?
  • Pro – Fun Scarves
  • And [the scarves] are useful – “Yoo hoo! Beer man! More warm beer please! Here let me get my 3 euros, and 2 euros for the tax.”
  • You could grate cheese on that stomach. Cheese that American athletes would then eat.
  • Con-Low Scores
  • Pro – Rioting
  • I say against Mexico we build a giant wall down the field.
  • WE’RE GOING TO WIN THE WORLD CUP!
  • Which was longer, that speech or the title of the book?
  • He was the original Blame America Firster.
  • It’s like if your wife says, Do these pants make me look fat, you say No, they don’t. Carter said, we looked a little chunky.
  • Carter, worst president, or worsted president?

Will Forte! Hahah. I was thinking through the whole interview, “Wow, this guy looks a lot like a certain celebrity…hmm what is that guys name!?” Yeah, definitely an aged Will Forte. lmao.

“What a f@#king a$$hole.” I loved that line. I’m definitely glad Al Franken was finally determined the winner.

The soccer part was really funny too. Especially with the scarf, “yoohoo! Beer man!” I actually have to say that the scarfs are really cool (I have a few) and I think Americans should add scarfs to all the other types of memorablia we have our favorite sports team logos on.

Ok, I had to vote for the whole soccer segment because my husband plays soccer. Not professionally. It’s in an old farts league but, man, they get rough out there. I love soccer but found that segment hilarious! And Alexi Lalas… *dreamy sigh*

I also really enjoyed the interview and thought Mattson did an excellent job with it. He was a good sport while still sticking with his talking points.

Oh and the nature documentary with the Benny Hill theme made me laugh!

I had to vote for Alexi Lalas’s interview simply because when he told Stephen, “Don’t go screaming and yelling that we’re going to win the world cup…,” my first thought was, “Oh, don’t say that. You know Stephen’s going to start yelling about how we’re going to win the World Cup now,”…and then he did. : )

PS–ColbertNation.com has been fussing with their look and made a few tweaks, including a new header!

The ragging on Al Franken was hilarious. Given his former comedian status I’m sure Stephen will happily continue to “BRING IT” about Senator Franken knowing that he will really enjoy it.

I loved yesterday’s episode. That character break after the Benny Hill music made me smile.

But, I just had to vote for the soccer segment. I mean, we got to see him do everything we wanted. He falls asleep, messes with scarf while he made fun of the british, and his audience agreed with him about rioting.

The interview was terrific. I loved on how much he was in-character for it. Especially when he made his audience chant along with him.

I think Stephen has been waiting for a guest with a topic he could really let loose with in a comedic way! The discussion of Jimmy Carter was the right topic for him to revist and emphasize his Reagan love! I really appreciate that Stephen gauges his guests and can determine when to heighten his “personality”! A truly terrific, engaging mind at work!

I voted for the Al Franken segment because I’m a Minnesotan who’s been impatiently waiting a long time for this moment! Not to mention, “what a f**cking a**hole” was so funny!

Other than that, I loved Stephen’s amusement of the audience’s mob mentality, and his character break after the Benny Hill nature video.

AND I agree that it was great to see Stephen dial his character way up for this interview, while the guy clearly held his ground. I’m glad I’m not the only one who thought of Will Forte!

So funny about the courts bit; I was just reading Chapter 5 (The Judicial Branch) of the Teacher’s Edition of America The Book and Frank McCourt was also mentioned there. :)

I had to vote for the 4th of July segment. As he said, Jesus w/ a gun is always appropriate. Plus the Easter graphic. And then the Declaration of Independence w/ Jesus H. Christ. Bwah! I had to stop it and back the TiVo up to look at it again. So funny!

The entire show was great. And I loved the interview. Way to go, Kevin Mattson, for keeping up w/ Stephen. I may have to get that book. I love(d) Jimmy Carter. The subject seems quite topical now.
