Stephen Colbert in the Zeitgeist – June 26, 2009
By
Happy Friday, Zoners! I hope everyone’s weekend is off to a great start. It’s time for a quick look at a few of the interesting Colbert gleanings from the web this week. Today, we have a cartoon Stephen, a nerd following in Stephen’s footsteps, and a lumberjack (but not that lumberjack). Here’s your zeitgeist for June 26th.
- Casting the Simpsons – MomLogic.com
“If there were going to be a real-life movie made for “The Simpsons,” who would you choose for each role?” (A slideshow of photoshopped pictures offers suggestions for who should play each role, including Stephen as Weiland Smithers. I have to confess that I don’t watch “The Simpsons,” but I’ll assume that would be a good choice. Because when would Stephen ever not be a good choice?)
- Hodgman debriefs on his D.C. debut – POLITICO.com (John Hodgman recaps his appearance at the Radio & Television Correspondents’ Association dinner last Friday, and acknowledges that he had a tough act to follow.)
“Hodgman also admitted… that he was aware of the large shadow created by ‘Comedy Central’ colleague Stephen Colbert, whose 2006 speech before the White House Correspondents’ Association’s annual dinner became on online sensation.
“‘As a member of the ‘Daily Show’ and ‘Colbert Report’ family, obviously I felt very keenly the very high bar that Stephen had set,’ said Hodgman. ‘And it became clear that that was a destructive path to think on. There’s no way to match it. You just have to do your own thing.’”
- Local timbersport pro Forrester chopping at the bit – The News-Review (Roseburg, OR) Remember this Sport Report from last summer that focused on timbersports? The subject of that report, Mike Forrester, offered up some reflections on his experiences filming the segment for the show in this profile.
“After 14 hours of non-stop filming (for a six-minute clip), Forrester said he was exhausted, and still a little skeptical — after all, the 43-year-old had just been encouraged to act like a backwoods lumberjack for the amusement of a national audience. But after seeing the final product last June, Forrester said the experience was well worth it… ‘They did a great job,’ Forrester said. ‘They tell me Stephen Colbert likes timbersports and he’s really into it. It was a fun deal.’”

This was fun – thanks for the lumberjack (yes, that lumberjack!) link!
re Simpsons: I was willing to complain about Stephen as Smithers until I saw George Clooney as Homer – now that’s satire!
I don’t think John Hodgman had anything to worry about; I saw that speech a week ago and it was a hoot.

If Stephen’s going to be a Simpson’s character, I’d go for Principal Skinner. Authoritarian out of touch with his surroundings? How can you miss? Smithers is a ball-less, gall-less bootlicker.

lol – I wonder if real Stephen is really into timbersports, as they told the lumberjack from last year’s spor repor?! that sounds a little like something they just told the guy to stroke his ego a little!

I wondered about that, too! Stephen never struck me as a timbersports kind of guy.
