Klassic Kolbert: “The Girl Is Mine” cover featuring John Legend and Stephen Colbert

By DB on June 26th, 2009 ·

After the news of the tragic death of Michael Jackson yesterday, I received numerous requests for the video of the John Legend/Stephen Colbert duet, “The Girl Is Mine”, featured on ‘The Colbert Report’. The video is not available on ColbertNation.com, due to copyright or something I’m sure, and I feared it was lost to the annals of time.

As luck would have it, however, Doce.Ca featured this song as one of the 10 most unique Michael Jackson covers in its MJ tribute published today and even found a video that they were able to post to YouTube.

Grab your KeepVid software and download this sucker quick – it won’t be around for long if the Viacom lawyers get wind of this.

Great clip, or the greatest clip? I love that smooth, sexy, jazzy voice…John’s not bad either =]

Like everyone else, I’ve been looking for this clip forever. Thanks for posting in MJ’s memory.

Thanks for finding that clip. It was great to see the vid again. I listen to this song almost daily, and man the audio quality of the vid wasn’t the best, so those who want to get a better quality of put it on your mp3 player can download it from http://www.4shared.com/file/94076763/e7adde38/The_girl_is_mine.html

Thank you for posting this. I have a lot of great childhood memories tied up with Micheal’s music. It’s so terribly sad to see him go, but his talent and music will live on forever. Rest in peace…

Oh, thank you so much for posting this (and thanks lacolberta, for the audio link)! It’s one of my favorite songs from the show. John Legend is incredible, and it’s a great performance by Stephen. Often he really belts out the songs, which is cool, but his voice just shines in this softer arrangement.

And, of course, it’s a favorite for Stephen’s “I will kick your prom king ass” line.

Absolute gold, and lovely to hear in memory of MJ.

“I will kick your prom king ass!”
LMAO!

This was a beautiful tribute. I grew up watching and listening to the Jackson 5. Even though Michael just got too weird for me in recent years, he was still a greatly talented man .

You know, I wonder if Stephen will re-broadcast it on Monday’s show, in MJ’s memory. The news was breaking around the time of Thursday’s taping.

Of course, the snarky Viacom lawyers will probably still keep it off the TDS site. :(

YAY YAY YAY YAY YAY! :)

Thank you so MUCH! I could watch this clip over and over and over again … and now I will, because I just saved it and will now have it forEVAH! :)

Wow, I am usually not such a squee-ing fangirl (fangirl, but usually not quite so squeeing – 35yr old professional here!) but I just love this duet so much, everything about it – Stephen’s singing, John’s lovely singing and playing, John’s facial expressions (those *eyes*!), and of course the banter at the end. (love the premise too – fighting over lady liberty/america – cute, clever, and in character!)

I was one of the people who requested it Thursday night, after watching vids online of thriller, beat it, billie jean, etc. I was never a huge Michael Jackson fan and it’s not really my kind of music, but damn some of it is really brilliant (and his dancing was amazing); and as my age suggests, “Thriller” was in the background of my childhood. It’s neat that lots of others thought of this clip too, and cool that someone else included it in their tribute to MJ. Thanks!

hihi from the cuts and decoding filter I used I’m pretty sure this is the clip I ripped and uploaded on youtube a few hours after the show.
It took Viacom only a day to get it removed but it had over 16k views by then and all, over a hundred, comments were positive. A first for youtube ;-)

Nice to see it resurface :D

Hope you all managed to save a copy of the vid before it was taken down; I know I love it (but then, it always makes me happy when the Comedy Central boys salute the “King of Pop”).
