As of late, The Colbert Report has been masterfully providing us plenty of good reading. However, folks at The Daily Show have also showed up in the media in interesting ways, whether describing their lives or making jokes with about the President. Let’s see what they’ve been up to:
Aasif Mandvi (Correspondent, The Daily Show with Jon Stewart)
- Two weeks ago The Guardian had a great story about Aasif, where he spoke about his experience growing up in the UK, trying to find acting work in the US, and coming to The Daily Show. It’s called ‘I sit on a fence between two cultures’, and you should definitely check it out.
- Hopefully after reading that article, you’re impressed and sorry you didn’t see some of Aasif’s earlier roles. Well, you have one night to see Sakina’s Restaurant, the one man show he wrote and performed in. It will be on July 28 The SoHo Playhouse. You can get ticket information here.
John Oliver (Correspondent, The Daily Show with Jon Stewart)
- As regular Bugle listeners will know, John did a photo shoot with GQ a month or so ago. The result is now available to be seen on GQ’s website, as the third page of a slideshow here, which features up and coming comedians. Also, in case you were wondering, John said on this week’s Bugle that he did not get to keep that watch!
John Hodgman (Contributer, The Daily Show with Jon Stewart)
- Those who follow John on Twitter or keep up with the political buzz will know that John Hodgman was supposed to be the funniest thing on C-SPAN in a very long time. His speech about Nerds vs. Jocks at the Radio & TV Correspondents’ Dinner recently was indeed very funny. I allowed President Obama to demonstrate his own nerdiness, and considered which category different administrations and media sources belong to. You can watch the speech in its entirety here, where it’s on C-SPAN’s official YouTube channel.
Thanks, Tiger! What a fascinating interview with Aasif…. and I finally got to watch John Hodgman’s speech. Still need time to process both.

Hodgeman’s speech was fantastic! He totally rocked those awards. And he kept President Obama chuckling through the entire thing so I say, a job very well done, sir!

I was laughing my butt off at Hodgman’s speech throughout the weekend. I’ve never read Dune, but that did not in any way diminish my enjoyment of his routine. Hilarious!
He actually spoke a bit more about it here, acknowledging the speechmaking standard Stephen set for the Daily Show/Colbert Report families and describing how he (Hodgman) was reprimanded by the Secret Service during his rehearsal. Having been to a couple of his book signings, I couldn’t repress a giggle at his mention of his tendency to pace; he really does tend to get the fidgets when he has an audience. (It’s cute, though.)

Wow, not even John Oliver’s attractive and toned physique can make that hideous suit appealing. It’s as if they went out of their way to make the suit as unflattering to the male form as possible.

My comment doesn’t involve any of the fabulous Daily Show contributors above, but, I thought many on this site would want to know…
While listening to NPR this morning, I heard that Allison Silverman will be on Fresh Air this afternoon (or whenever it airs near you!)discussing TCR behind the scenes. So, if you missed it, subscribe to the free podcast on itunes–it should upload tomorrow sometime–or maybe it will be on NPR’s website!
I meant to post earlier but got busy at work–ugh Mondays! :)

I’m psyched about “Sakina’s Restaurant”! About 14 years ago I was working backstage on an Off-Broadway show in which Aasif had a small part as a delivery “boy” and he had just started performing “Sakina’s Restaurant”. I bunch of us from the show went to see it, and I was floored by how amazing he was. I’m definitely going to see it again. If you’re in the NY area, try not to miss it!

random 6-degrees comment here: I happened to hear Mo Rocca on NPR’s “Wait, Wait, Don’t Tell Me” this week, and he was consistently wickedly funny! I know he’s on that program often, but he just seemed to nail every single ad-lib comment he made, I was in stitches (and occasionally saying “Oh no you di-n’t!”). Yay for Mo!
Also, I will have to check out that John Hodgman speech! And the Aasif interview. And the Allison Silverman interview. :)
