EPISODE NUMBER: 5080 (June 15, 2009)
GUEST: Austan Goolsbee
SEGMENTS: Stephen’s Sound Advice – How To Be A Totalitarian Nutjob, CAR SHOUT!
VIDEOS: Monday, June 15, 2009
I sat there and laughed for a good solid two minutes at that horrible plastic wig. Oh my dear lord! We were hoping for a wig, but no one could have anticipated one that friggin’ bad. Kudos, ‘Colbert Report’ props department for finding that monstrosity. And jokes about Kim Jong-il just never, ever get old. Ever.
Being a rather proud user of an iPhone, I was terribly amused at all of Ed W.’s dropped calls. That being said, you will pry my iPhone out of my cold dead hand. I love how Stephen automatically assumed that Ed W. had an iPhone and starts to advise him to toggle the Airplane mode. I need to try that sometime.
And I enjoyed seeing Austen Goolsbee’s frustration at Stephen. He kept trying to hit those points like he could actually change his mind or something. My favorite part of the whole interview, though, is when Austen leaps over the table and rubs Stephen’s fuzzy head. That lucky, lucky man. His head is so rubbable right now.
How did you enjoy the episode tonight?
- Wow, everything seems so different, since I came back from war.
- I will never forget you staff of Camp Victory’s Cinnabon. Semper Frosting Guys!
- Who cares that Adam Lambert came out of the closet? NO WAY! I did not see that coming!
- Thank goodness I had such a long flight back, so I could use the time to regrow my hair.
- Ah, sweet cornea seering heat, how I’ve missed you.
- You know, I’ve always said Matt Lauer was a good looking guy.
- I’m just saying an internet sex tape would not hurt.
- We all rememeber their smash romantic comedy, “Help, We’re being Held Against Our Will in North Korea”.
- Legend holds that your father’s very first round of golf, he shot 11 holes in one. Of course, those 11 holes were shot in one caddy.
- But remember, you want to build up to albino sea cucumber. So start being hailed by something more believeable. Like [Veggie Tale's] Larry the Cucumber.
- Every dictator needs his own unique style, whether it’s moustaches, moustaches, or moustaches.
- So mix and match outfits and eras. Might I suggest a dickey, wader boots, leiderhosen, and a full Phil Spector.
- Point is, no one is going to remember that you are a madman if you shop at Talbot’s.
- I never thought I would see the day – GM is bankrupt, Chrysler was sold, and someone bought a Saturn. Jimmy, take it down!
- Car Shout is just like NPR’s Car Talk, except I know nothing about cars and I don’t broadcast in the nude. Why do you think they call them Click and Clack?
- But that goes against everything GM’s proud of. Like cars like the Escalade, whose environmental impact is so large, some blame it for the Escalade-shaped hole in the ozone layer.
- I know [Hot Wheels] are small, but I will duct tape a bunch of them together.
- Maybe you could start by describing a car.
- And wait, Ed W. from Detroit? Is this Ed Whitacre, the new chairman of GM.
- Really? We’re going to be at Disneyland?
The wig was so freakin’ funny. Wow, was that a horrible hair piece. Haha. I love that Stephen mentioned Adam Lambert. <3
The interview was great! And that guest was definitely lucky for getting to rub Stephen's head. That was too funny.

The interview was great! And the guest is definitely lucky for getting to rub Stephen head. That was too funny.
Also, I must add that The Toss was fantastic the way Jon stood up for and clapped for Stephen. He’s so proud. :D

That plastic hair piece! Seriously?! Too funny!
I didn’t think the audience was going to stop clapping for him, either! A much deserved standing ovation [I assume they were standing, I would have been! :) ]
I also found the closing oddly amusing since I had the same thought yesterday driving back from the airport…one of those “I’m home already? How did that happen?” moments.

The character break where Stephen lost control of his pen nearly had me on the floor. That must be the first time he’s had trouble handling the pen, because between the chewing and the little flippy thing he does, I’ve never seen a fumble before.
I was so proud to see Jon stand up for Stephen and yell at him to just take it. Loved that he began with a slow clap. I so wanted to be there in a standing O, myself.
It was hard to pick a favorite today, but the beginning had me laughing the most. The wig was so, so…so bad; it barely even looked like hair. I was just thinking, “This is hilarious, but you’re not allowed to wear that the whole show.” So glad it came flying off in the end. Stephen’s expressions as he heard “the voices” had me dying.
Sound Advice was hilarious as always. CAR SHOUT was equally amazing. And I thought Goolsbee did wonderfully in the interview. He was very funny in my opinion. I loved the contempt he seemed to have for Stephen’s character and those who think his way, but at the same time he seemed like he was very at home at the show. Way fun to watch.

Did Stephen steal that hair from Rod Blagojevich?

ROFL!!!

The whole time Goolsbee was being interviewed, I kept thinking, “Man, if I were him, I wouldn’t be able to stop myself from reaching across the table and rubbing his head.” And then he did it! Damn you, Austan Goolsbee, I am jealous of your head-rubbing!
The wig was a scream — I thought it looked a bit like Hannity hair.

On DB’s comment about Austan Goolsbee’s (doesn’t that name truly sound like a prof straight out of the University of Chicago?) amusedly rubbing SC’s head – that new coiffure does make even Stephen’s character seem interestingly vulnerable, and coupling that with his guests and all of us knowing what a truly nice person is behind the character, must make the rubbing of SC’s head almost too tempting to pass up, especially for someone with the verve of Austan Goolsbee. We all loved it as we watched at home.

DB, can you add the toss to the poll? That’s what I’m voting for! I just loved Jon standing up and applauding Stephen for his amazing shows in Iraq. Great moment and well-deserved. I loved that Jon demanded Stephen to just take in the applause and then Stephen dryly responded with “It’s like looking a mirror.” Oh Stephen:)

Did anyone else notice the string attached to Stephen’s wig about a minute before it flew off?

Yes, I saw it! Haha… So I wasn’t surprised when it flew off, but I still laughed. That had to be the ugliest, fakest-looking hairpiece I’ve ever seen.

I saw it too. That wig was hysterically funny! So wrong and hideously ugly, but hysterically funny. No wonder he cracked up when he first saw himself in it. The rest of the show was great too. I enjoyed every bit of it which makes it hard to vote for just one segment.

I think my inital reaction to last night’s show can be described as STEPHEN TYRONE COLBERT GET THAT THING OFF YOUR HEAD
He looked like he belonged in an oversize dollhouse (ooh, fake pundit dollhouse, I’d buy that). It’ll be interesting to watch his hair grow back, though I was thinking it could be funny if he wore a different wig every night.
I hate those moments you realize you’ve been on autopilot, especially when driving! I mean, you figure you must’ve been paying attention at the time since there are no major accidents, but I prefer my brain set to record, tyvm.

I was reading a taping report from one of last night’s attendees, and it said that Stephen cracked up when he first saw that thing on his head — so badly that he had to retape the intro. It cracks *me* up just imagining that.

I would have been very impressed if he managed not to bust up laughing when he saw himself! (Not that I’m not impressed with him normally, of course.)
And James Kyson Lee was there! :O Oh the things I would’ve wanted to ask him but wouldn’t because I’m a wuss…

Hahaha! The wig!! The wig!! I’ve gotta vote for that, it was hysterical!
Why can’t we vote for the Toss? That was awesome!

That wig was so funny! I loved when it blew off and how the audience was cheering so loud. When that pen fell out of his hand and a lovely character break happened, I was laughing so hard. That toss was great though! I would have voted for the toss, if it were up there.

AHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!…wig.

I, too, nearly sh@t myself when I saw Stephen’s wig. It looked a bit like it came off a Lego person.
I really enjoyed the interview, until the National Weather Service in Pleasant Hill killed the sound and issued the tornado and severe thunderstorm warnings, punctuated by a temporary loss of electricity that inconveniently lasted until the interview was over. Just my luck, eh? I’ll be watching that online sometime…

Oh! That wig was wonderful! I’m with Gaia Faye. I hope he wears another one tonight. A Mop-Top, a pompadour – whatever.
Austan Goolsbee seems like an interesting man, and a bit of an it-getter. Stephen’s smile at the end of that interview was radiant. If only America could harness the energy from that smile, some of its’ problems might be solved.

My mom totally hated the wig. Hahaha. I was waiting for it to be removed at some point by accident or by a character break.
I love the banter between Stephen and Austan Goolsbee.

I thought the interview was a lot of fun! I voted for it. I liked the content, the metaphors, the head-rubbing, all of it! at one point Goolsbee seemed to be especially exasperated (in a good way), and he rubbed his own head a bit in one of those classic human expressions of “omg, who am I dealing with right now?” (again, in a good way.)
the car shout was funny, the wig and its removal was great as well. a great first show back in the US!

i so loved to hate the wig. so, so happy when it came off!! and yes, i saw the string, too.
Car Shout was funny, Stephen’s Sound Advice was hilarious!! but I had to vote for the interview. that was just too good! i loved the analogy with the burning house and the child. that was really great. i’ll be watching that again soon i’m sure!!
and the toss isn’t in the poll because it’s *technically* part of TDS. yes? that’s my thought anyway. ok, off to watch the toss now, too. how amazing it must have been to be there last night. wow.
