VIDEO: B-roll of Stephen Colbert in Iraq from the Multi-National Corps

By Ms Interpreted on June 11th, 2009 ·

I love it! The DVIDS site that posted the article I just blogged also included a bunch of videos of Stephen with the troops, from his arrival and taking pictures and signing autographs with the troops, to distributing care packages and yet more mingling with the troops, to B-roll from an actual taping.

Here’s a fun interview, for starters:

Stephen talking about his haircut and scary camel spiders

This was so awesome. A perfect way to start my day! Thank you, guys!! :D

Yea, but then we wouldn’t get to hear someone actually asking him if he is really going commando and if he brought baby powder!

I’m so glad you picked this one to embed – I love the camel spider talk…
And I’m loving the fan girls and guys in the photo op vids – and Stephen is really pouring on the energy for them!

Morning Edition on NPR just did a short segment at the end of their show covering Colbert in Iraq. It was at the very end of the hour. I will be looking for a link. They had a few bars of him harmonizing during the national anthem. Was pretty cool.

OMG I’ve just launched into stage 6 Fangirl overdrive! Why does he have to be so precious and lovable? If he were a total jerk, I could deal much easier with his irresistible hunkiness.

Those are cool. Thanks for posting. I love the fact that he feels the need to introduce himself so often while shaking hands with the troops – like they don’t know he is Stephen Colbert! I’m guessing that is the polite, Southern boy coming though. He always seems to listen so attentively when people talk to him.

Omg how cute is he? He’s always so polite to everyone and humble…I’m proud to be a fangirl of such a noble creature!

Awesome clips. I especially like the first one of Stephen’s arrival. It’s so great that the military is sharing with us all this great footage and tidbits.

Question: Are Stephen’s glasses a prop, because he’s not wearing them in these vids? I thought he was wearing contacts but someplace that dry wouldn’t be a comfortable place to wear contacts, at least from my experience. He is so wonderful to shake every soldier’s hand. It makes me get a little teary when I see it.

Nah–the glasses aren’t props. There’s a youtube video from 2nd city time (the clown one), and he was wearing glasses then as well.

As I’ve said before, that’s what is so charming and endearing about Stephen Colbert:
I (and all of us here, I’m sure [otherwise we wouldn’t be looking at and writing on this site all the time]) really do believe SC is a genuine, well intentioned, and lovely human being. Such a nice guy.

All these clips say it once again – it’s so nice seeing the proof over and over.

Part 2 is my favorite. I guess I’m not surprised that I find the shaved-head, make-up and glasses-free, slightly puffy version of Stephen even hotter than the shellacked, tv version

I’m so excited by the thought that moms and dads and siblings might be watching these clips and get a glimpse of “their soldier.” So not only is SC bringing America and himself to the troops, he’s bringing the troops to their families.

On a serious note – having worked with other vets and involved with suicide prevention [sorry to be a downer on this page] – I was immediately struck by the young man at point 3:37 in video #3. In contrast to the hundreds who passed by SC with huge grins on their faces, he looks like he’s developing the 1000 yard stare. Even though he’s standing right next to Colbert for the photo shoot he never makes eye contact or smiles, and turns away quickly at the end. Don’t know who he is, but I hope he’s ok.

Such great videos of Stephen interacting with the troops! I was thinking also that families at home might be searching for their relative in the audience.

I loved the “threatdown” question – Stephen hasn’t done a lot of those lately – I loved the last 2 – but what I’d really like to see is a Tip/Wag, ending with a tip for the troops – who knows?

Hope they will all be home safe soon!

Also, regarding Stephen’s glasses, he is often photographed in them in real life, so I am sure they are real. I have seen video of him on Whose Line from about ten years ago and he was wearing them then.

Thank you so much for posting these videos! I feel like I just discovered a hidden treasure! I wanted to be a fly on the wall during his visit there and this made it possible.

1. While he’s posing with the soldiers outside of the palace, was it just me or did I hear a gunshot just as Stephen was holding up the USO flag? Don’t mean to be an alarmist, but I though I heard something.

2. I LOVED how humble and pensive Stephen became during the interview segment when asked what Bob Hope would think of his shows.

3. Stephen is just giving so much of himself as he shakes hand after hand for the photo ops. I love the one girl with glasses near the end of the segment who is jumping and down for joy that she is meeting and standing next to Stephen Colbert. I don’t blame her at all:) Um, was Stephen wearing sweatpants during that entire segment? Haha!

4. I wish Private Moldan did have a chance to chit-chit with Stephen:(

Ah, Stephen. I love you so much it hurts.
