NPR covers Operation Iraqi Stephen: Going Commando

Nancy Pelosi Radio’s ‘Morning Edition’ covered Stephen in Iraq this morning. Here’s a bit of the transcript of the report:

‘Colbert Report’ Broadcasts From Iraq

All week soldiers have been crowding into an old palace hall on a U.S. military base near Baghdad airport to catch the Colbert Report.

Most of the troops know by now that Colbert is a large donor to several charities for wounded veterans and their families. And during the first show in the series he did something to prove his commitment. By video link from Washington D.C., President Barack Obama ordered the commander of U.S. forces in Iraq, Gen. Ray Odierno, to shave off Colbert’s hair. Goodbye anchorman hairdo — hello crew cut.

“I think it’s great that he’s out here to help cheer up our troops,” said Navy commander Otto Lee, a long-time fan. “Humor is a very powerful tool to get people’s attention. With the economy in the states, the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan have taken a back seat in all of the news reporting.”

Colbert’s ridiculous stage character often disarms his guests before posing very serious questions. The first guest was Iraqi Deputy Prime Minister Barham Salih, who was there to talk about progress towards democracy.

The next guest was the head of ground operations in Iraq, Lt. Gen. Charles Jacoby. Again Colbert demonstrated the growing power and influence of news parody. It was a rare instance where Gen. Jacoby spoke to a journalist — or at least someone who plays a journalist on TV.

You can read the full piece or, better yet, listen to it by clicking the Listen Now link you find at the top of this page. (There is even a link to download it!) Besides being easier than actually reading, there’s audio from the show and a bit of Stephen harmonizing on the Star Spangled Banner as well.

Ha ha, Jennie, “Nancy Pelosi Radio” — that definitely put a smile on my face again.

Nice summary of what Stephen’s been doing over there. Too bad they didn’t have time for more of the anthem, but it’s still a good overview.

=p Did you find it by the interweb or were you listening? I heard them mention it at 15 after and I left for a bit, then came back around 50 after and they were just about to start the segment–it was doubly nice, cause I also picked up my newsweek before the segment came on :)

I live in Europe so can only listen to NPR on-line. I have a search set for certain topics (like ‘colbert’) that alert me to stories I don’t want to miss.

Is it just me, or have these been particularly strange today?

that reminds me…do we have a link to the audio/video of Colbert singing the national anthem? I thought that was going to be in the beginning of the first show. I might have missed it though.

I think he’s been doing it before the show – but I’m hoping for a bit of it tonight.

I haven’t found any yet. I’m guessing that tonight (since its the last night there) they’ll show the anthem; it would be nice. But I will keep on hunting for it. TCR allowed photographs and stuff inside the palace which was nice. I was excited when I saw all the flashes going off. We at least know NPR has a copy of the anthem, so I’m sure there are others. Its just another part of the puzzle, trying to figure out where the hell they are hiding all the “behind the scenes” stuff.
