Episode 5078 (6/10/2009)

epguideiconEPISODE NUMBER: 5078 (June 10, 2009)
GUESTS: Deputy Prime Minster Barham Saleh, Joe Biden, Tom Hanks, Sarah Palin, Lt. Gen. Charles Jacoby
SEGMENTS: The Spiderhole, Better Know a Cradle of Civilization, Tom Hanks sends USO care packages with Stephen
VIDEOS: Wednesday, June 10, 2009

Oh, this week just keeps getting better and better. I so wish I could have been in the room of the Prop department when they got the order of “put a camo body outfit on this Emmy.” I love how amused Stephen gets with the audience reactions throughout the show.

The entire Tom Hanks segment was amazingly wonderful. Tom Hanks is so good at comedy when he wants to be. The card segment was so cute, and Stephen cracking up at the end was classic. And Stephen with puppies always wins. But when I thought it couldn’t get any cuter … No! No! Bad! Bad! Off! Bad puppy! And then Stephen starts eating the ice cream? Cute overload! And that little drop of ice cream on his lip? I couldn’t hardly stand it! Stephen and Tom were having so much fun together breaking up that ice sculpture. Don’t forget to stop by USO.org, and make a donation to send a care package of your own!

Okay, since I’m still recovering from the puppy, I’ll let you guys do some of the talking. What were your favorite bits from tonight?

  • All my life, I’ve identified with strong, military role models. As a child, I ate a lot of Cap’n Crunch.
  • Of course, as an adult, I eat Admiral Crunch. It’s actually just Cap’n Crunch, but I pour rum over it for a more mature taste.
  • What happens in Babylon … stays in Babylon.
  • Finally, Saddam was, let’s say, sent to live on a farm upstate.
  • But don’t be too specific, I don’t want my staff to get too many ideas.
  • You have a PhD in Oceanography – how do you use that here?
  • You’re fantastic with accents.
  • The entire country might be Tang. Rusty Tang. By the way, that was my porn name for a while, Rusty Tang.
  • Stephen: Say something only Tom Hanks would say! Tom Hanks: WILSOOOON!
  • I’ve got two things everybody loves. Ice cream and puppies.
  • I guess we’re just going to have to teach the puppies not to eat the ice cream.
  • Tom Hanks: Always spay and neuter your pets. Stephen: Nicely done.
  • I don’t know if you heard the interview with Barham Saleh, I do the pandering around here.

Colbert/Hanks was just an enormous overload of joy. Every moment was just fabolous. Hanks was really hilarious and they seemed to be having a great time with the whole…um…project. I imagine a majority of that was improv.

And that puppy….oh Muffin! It was like they took the Bill Clifford “Dana Carvey” puppy and floofed it up by about 500%. It was soo adorable! I’m very thankful that I had my cat to cuddle and squee with the whole episode, though I must have squeezed the breath out of her I was so excited. Poor cat probably has a few ruptured organs.

Is there really only one show left?! Say it ain’t so!

This has to be the ABSOLUTE BEST show of the week. This week is EPIC. The best Colbert Report EVER!!!! The Colbert Hanks part was the best. They were having soo much fun breaking the ice sculpture. I need to watch the rerun. Will not miss. Now we know how Colbert got to Iraq. In a wooden box sent to the USO. That must have been quite a fun trip in a box. :-)

The part with Tom Hanks was so awesome! I could not stop laughing. They were just too funny together and it looked like they were having a lot of fun.

The care package segment was hilarious! They just seemed to be having so much fun, and then someone made the executive decision to throw a puppy in the mix. I wonder how much time the ice puppy took to sculpt v. how much time it took to smash it to bits.

Again, both interviews were great, both entertaining and informative. I also loved the spiderhole opening bit and the follow up tweet about a camel spider.

I can only begin to imagine what the final show from Iraq will be like, and I can’t wait to find out!

  5. Tiger says:

excellent interviews and shoutouts, but I cannot vote against a puppy, I am sorry! them shouting at the card was so fun, and smashing the ice sculpture as well.

it seems kind of related to that tweet from a few days ago about if nice guys finish last who wins in a nice guys contest or something to that effect.

  6. Dee says:

The tom hanks segment would be the most ridiculous TCR segment ever! Awesomeeee!

i like the deputy prime minister. he has a nice, easy way about him.

  8. SazzrahUK says:

The whole show was fantastic, best one so far I think, but I had to vote for the Tom Hanks segment – I’m pretty sure thats the greatest thing I’ve ever seen in my life. You know what would be awesome? If they released a DVD of all the USO shows and some form of backstage documentary, I would buy that….twice.

Also, I wonder how much of the Tom Hanks segment was written, or if most of it was ad libbed?

Stephen and a puppy: Best. Care. Package. Ever. :)

  10. In Absentia says:

This is the one episode this week that I can’t vote on anything. Everything was good. And what’s even better is what’s going to be on tomorrow’s show? All the people we knew were going to be interviewed and featured have been. So, what’s going on tomorrow? I really can’t wait.

    • Nukaleu says:

I was trying to guess who might be shouting out tonight. My first guess would be Hillary Clinton. If there’s another one I’m wondering if another president will be on, or maybe a vice. Jon, perhaps?

  11. Loll says:

Seem to be in the majority here – loved the Tom Hanks bit! Just very silly (and cute) all round. In the taped bits this week, Stephen has really played up the not-so-bright, well-intentioned part of “Stephen”, rather than the really strong, overpowering part (which can be fun too!). I think field pieces often go that way. It has really been a great week (so far).

  12. Viviane says:

OMG!I never laugh so much in my entire life,I already watched the Tom Hans segments more than 7 times.

  13. luvtcr says:

Hanks + Colbert = comedy gold! LOVED it!

Seriously, I hope someone back at Comedy Central makes the executive decision to place these eps on DVD–with outtakes and behind the scenes! Don’t you just want to see all the footage of Tom and Stephen that didn’t make it in?! [not to mention the other field pieces like "Army of Me"]. I would buy multiple copies!

  14. Puppy!!!! :) The segment with Tom Hanks was great. I love that they cradle the puppy.

“I’ll be nicest, and you’ll be guy.” Hahahaha!

Entire show was great. Entire audience wearing WristStrong bracelets! Guests were witty, and I especially enjoyed the interview with the Deputy Prime Minister, who was very positive and optimistic in the midst of complications and difficulty.

I’m sorry I can’t comment because my head exploded from puppy/Hanks/Colbert cuteness.

  16. Michele says:

The whole show was wonderful! I enjoyed both of the interviews quite a bit but that whole segment with Tom Hanks was absolutely hilarious. I would so love to see the outtakes from that!

  17. ColbertGirl27 says:

Oh my gosh. Stephen and Tom Hanks need a recurring segment on TCR. Maybe Stephen could resurrect the “nice news” segment from The Dana Carvey Show. So cute!

  18. ColbertGirl27 says:

P.S. Just thought I’d give a mention to Lt. Gen. Charles Jacoby. Loved it when Stephen began asking him about Iran and Jacoby said he’d have to ask Gen. Odierno! Ha! So funny to see a military man suddenly look like he’s in the hot seat because of Stephen.

    • morinao says:

My favorite part is at the end of the interview, when Stephen says, “I declared victory, but Gen. Odierno said not so fast, what do you think?”

Being a good soldier, Jacoby starts, “First let me say that I agree with Gen. Odierno completely,” then freezes in mortification as the audience snickers and he realizes how hilariously sycophantic that sounded.

Stephen breaks character and grins incredulously at the audience like, “I wasn’t going to call him on that, but you guys…damn.”

And the audience takes that as license to really bust out laughing and clapping as Jacoby slumps sheepishly in his chair.

Finally, Stephen rescues Jacoby by pretending nothing happened, allowing the general to finish the interview on a strong note.

  19. Teller says:

I voted for the Colbert/Hanks segment. You guys, I would watch a show with them hosting together. I would watch it all the time.

    Bad Host!
