More coverage of Stephen Colbert in Iraq

The stories are coming fast and furious, and we’re going to do our best to keep up with them all.

First, the USO has posted photos of Stephen with the troops (h/t Roland). Check out the gallery here.

When you’ve had your fill of them, here’s a nice bit from the Britain’s TimesOnline:

Colbert does Baghdad
June 08, 2009

Saddam would have had a fit. Echoing through the vast marble entrance chamber of his Al Faw palace came the Star Spangled Banner, sung in harmony by Stephen Colbert – of Daily Show and Colbert Report fame – and Sergeant Adrienn Falk. They held the last note as long as they could before the crowd went wild, light thrown from a chandelier the size of Wisconsin playing over three hundred or so crew-cut heads.

Comedian and presenter Colbert was in Baghdad last night to entertain the troops at Camp Victory, the base by Baghdad airport which includes a vast Saddam-built palace complex and lake. The first of four shows was filmed in front of an audience drawn from the largely American Multinational Forces in Iraq, in an evening which featured everything from stars-and-stripes sandbags to faintly off-colour weapons of mass destruction jokes. The audience generally acknowledged it to have reached the zenith of humour possible in an ex-dictator’s palace in roasting midsummer in a city where the air is full of sand.

this is my favorite bit from that article:
“‘It was a very historic event,’ said audience member First Lieutenant Stephen Clements afterwards, ‘to watch a sitting US President order a four star general to shave the head of a TV anchor. History was made tonight.’”
I appreciate it being all summed up like that for me!

(also maybe that article would be of more interest to the Times readers if TCR were shown in that country. oh well.)
