VIDEOS: Tuesday, June 2, 2009
(Full access video)

Oh, how I adore shows where I’m wondering how long the show will go before Stephen will totally break character. From the Table of Contents, we knew it was coming. I can’t believe it took until the end of “Cheating Death” for the big one to come. It was so worth the wait, though. Stephen’s smile just lights up my world. I’m going to have to gingerly take Gaia Faye’s “Bad Pun of the Year” Award bestowed after yesterday’s show comments and gives it to whichever Colbert writer came up with the “Tyra-nol” joke. *GROAN* Man, between that line and the Trix quip, that whole segment was pun-tastic.

And yay for the Smilin’ Bob reference! That and the Bacardi Mojito commercial always make me think of Colbert. Wait, that came out wrong.

I really enjoyed the Katty Kay interview. Being a working woman in what in theory should be the prime of my career, I’ve worked in too many companies where the men are managers and engineers, and the women are admins and customer service. It’s always good to hear a woman say that we can be successful in our careers. I’m definitely going to be picking up her book. And can I just say that I would kill for that perfect flip she’s working with her hair.

Are you still smiling from those delightful character breaks? What else did you enjoy about the show? And what name might be given to the Methad-O for late night comedy, not that we’re anywhere near ready to get rid of our faux news addiction?

  • You know me, I don’t expect a lot from the rest of the world. Just keep living according to our ideals, and keep sending us cheap tube socks.
  • I mean, really, “report only on Obama”. That’s like telling journalists to devote news time to John and Kate Plus Eight – we know that!
  • I have an honorary doctorate in Fine Arts, which means that when I’m in the operating theater, I always pause mid-surgery to do a scene from “Raisin In The Sun.”
  • Cheerios are marketing themselves as a drug. And sadly, many addicts resort to turning Trix. Silly rabbit.
  • Prescott’s new Pilli-O’s – with our lovable mascot, Tony the Doctor. One spoonful, and you’ll agree with Tony’s motto “You’ve got grrrrowths!”
  • Side effects may include opposable spleen, achy breaky back, and Foghorn Leghorns.
  • Or, in the case of Mountain Dew, Xtreeeeme cases!
  • Prescott Pharmaceutical’s department of cola and industrial solvents, is proud to announce their new product, Twitch. It’s the only cola on the market that counteracts loss of motor function by producing uncontrollable muscle spasms. We can’t tell you the secret ingredient, but it rhymes with Mystal Ceth.
  • Side effects may include vigilant kidney, Pez neck, and mahmoud ahmadinejaw.
  • Next – Oprah. That new diet is really working for her.
  • Evidently, they wanted you to show them, Suzanne. She follows the Apple a day advice the same way.
  • Personally, I dispute her prescription that can cure any psychological problem through the use of a douche. [Photo of Dr. Phil]
  • Methad-O: it’s exactly like Methadone, but spelled differently. For less severe talk show dependencies, doctors recommend Tyra-nol.
  • Side effects of Methad-O may include Mock Turtleneck, Delusions of Grandma, and Marzipancreas.
  • First of all, if it lasts longer than four hours, that *is* a sporting event.
  • Oprah’s on at 4pm and that’s when most men discover they have erectile dysfunction.
  • It is perfectly natural for men to hang out playing guitars, singing about their boners.
  • Thank you for stopping by, all we have time for is the title.
  • I’ll put you down for Terrible Mother. But Terrible Mother of the Years.
  • But I’m not a woman!

“Be sure to spay and noodle your pets. No I will not apologize for that”

I was so waiting for a character break. Great one! Go noodle your pets. :-)

Normally I would have voted for Cheating Death, but I had to go for the ED ads and Moran Redux. CSN Wooden Ships, indeed.

And how many times was Oprah mentioned tonight?

    RE: “you have beautiful derricks”

Stephen! That’s not a derrick. That’s a jack pump. A derrick is the tall structure used for the actual drilling of the well. The jack pump is used to bring the oil to the surface when the well pressure is too low.

I was just talking to my sister a couple of weeks ago about how often pumps are called derricks on TV. I guess it comes from growing up around oil fields.

Did Moran really sock Stephen during BKAD?! I didn’t see the segment when it originally aired.

  4. SazzrahUK says:

It was great to see that BKAD, I haven’t seen it before. Had to vote Cheating Death though, I get so excited when I see Stephen is going to do that segment, it never fails to make me cry with laughter!

    :( D’aw, my award.

I always love Cheating Death and its side effects. I think the one was “delusions of grandma?” Haha!

  7. Ms Interpreted says:

That “Cheating Death” segment killed me. It’s always good, but … my God, I thought I was going to die laughing when he got to those final side-effects. “Mock-Turtleneck”? The Lewis Carroll flashback alone was enough to delight. And “Marzi-pancreas” just about finished me off. Seeing the character break after that was just gravy.

The Rep. Jim Moran replay and the interview were both highly enjoyable, too. All in all, a very satisfying night.

  8. Coquette says:

i loved that “always spay and noodle your pets” best character break in a while.
also, re: the site, where did the quotes at the top go? i miss those. sometimes i refresh just to see those. sad face.

  9. The side effects in “Cheating Death” really did me in this time. I loved “achy breaky back” and “mahmoud ahmadinejaw.” And who doesn’t love a good Dr. Phil joke?

  10. vigwig says:

Loved Cheating Death and the hilarious side effects but voted for the Saudi segment if it included the character breaky opener which was delightful.

I got tickets for Aug. 3 late yesterday afternoon. I should probably tell my husband that will be one of the activities during our vacation.

Had to vote for Cheating Death! I really needed those laughs. “Pez-neck” was my favorite side effect. I also enjoyed the ED ads/Moran segment and thought it was very funny. “If it lasts more than 4 hours it *is* a sporting event.” LOL! I had never seen that BKAD segment so it was new to me.

      “Noodle” your pets. Ha ha!

  12. ColbertGirl27 says:

I voted for the interview because I loved it when Katty Kay said near the end of the interview “And Stephen, even men younger than you….” and Stephen smiled and replied “You know how to talk to me.” So cute!

Poor Stephen. I think he really would like to take off Mondays to be with his wife and kids. Hopefully he’ll get a break after his trip to the place that can’t be named:)

    • In Absentia says:

He already takes Fridays off. TCR is only on 4 days a week.

However, I loved “Cheating Death” which is usually not my favorite segment.

    • luvtcr says:

You took the words right out of my mouth! I loved the episode for the same reason and I was thinking the same thing about taking off Mondays!

I know the show only airs M-Th but I am sure Fridays are busy editing and doing remote or location shooting (ex. BKADs)and meeting with producers, etc. I am sure he skips out early whenever he can to be with his family!

      • vigwig says:

He’s putting in 12-13 hours days as it is, that’s more hours than a regular full time job.

        • luvtcr says:

Amazing, isn’t it?!It is a crazy pace! Here’s to avoiding exhaustion! We love you Stephen and The Report staff!

  14. Loved the Carrie Fisher reference; “Delusions of Grandma” is one of her novels. I’m sort of surprised no one else got that! ^_^;;

Great episode. The character breaks were ADORABLE! His smile is amazing! I missed that smile!

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

  15. Tiger says:

so, like, if for some reason the Report ever ends, Stephen should probably do like a once a week show called Cheating Death. I’d watch.

  19. jentaps says:

I had to vote for Cheating Death. My all time fave segment. This one was particularly fab, w/ those side effects.

The BKAD was wonderful, too. I really don’t remember seeing Moran hit him before. Am I losing it? I haven’t missed any eps, as far as I know.

Also loved the interview w/ Katty Kay. Great dress she had on, BTW. Loved how she tweeted that she didn’t know what the he%% to wear. I may have to buy her book. She was great w/ Stephen. “You know how to talk to me.” Awwww…

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

    • ColbertGirl27 says:

I loved her dress too! I thought it was rather ironic that her dress was a bit 1950s retro(which I love!) while she was taking a progressive stance.

      Loved that last line too;)
