Yay! New shows! With an appearance by Sweetness! WHOO! With the drop in the Table of Contents, it was nice to see an acknowledgment of the Sarah Palin controversy from this past week.

The way that the writers are slowly developing the “character” Sweetness is so very amusing. I love that they talk, and I love that Stephen gets that soft, sweet tone when he talks to her. The tone that Stephen takes when he says “We call it that because it’s the opposite of the way you’re supposed to be a racist” really drives that whole satiric point home. Yay for the Guy Smiley/Mitt Romney reference! Jeffrey Toobin was a most welcome surprise guest. “Have you met Sweetness? It’s rude not to introduce your fiancée.” Nice! I laughed quite heartily at the paraphrased comment from Sotomayor. But my favorite pop culture reference was the Shark reference.

It absolutely blows my mind that the Colbert Nation has raised over $100K for Donors Choose. Go, Nation!

I really enjoyed tonight’s episode – it was good to be able to laugh again. What were some of your favorite moments from tonight?

  • A little over a week ago, the President signed the [credit card reform] bill, and was immediately charged $150 fee to keep it active.
  • Civil War reenactments at Gettysburg are about to get a lot more realistic.
  • What’s that? No, I’m sure they clapped for you as loud as me.
  • Next weekend Sweetness is going to force a woodchuck to finally answer that riddle about wood he can chuck. Cough it up, Chucky!
  • But [Sonia] Sotomayor isn’t just a Latina, she is also a racist. Just ask any old, white man who support a border fence.
  • That’s right, a reverse racist. We call it that because it’s the opposite of the way you’re supposed to be a racist.
  • But as bad as is, to go back to the old painful stereotypes … White men can’t be judges, Laotians don’t take care of their hubcaps … that one’s true actually.
  • Many have even asked their gardeners what their name is.
  • And [Sonia Sotomayor] said in her ruling, “I would rather have my house burn down then have the fire put out by a white firefighter.” I’m paraphrasing.
  • Let me point out something to you, sir. She’s a Puerto Rican, grew up in New York City projects in the 1950′s, and that can only mean one thing – she’s a Shark. And you know Scalia’s a jet.
  • Another woman? How many women are there out there, Jeffrey?!
  • Full disclosure: It might be Bahrain.
  • Governor Rick Perry will do anything to avoid taking stimulus money.
  • Shiek condoms, or as they they call them, penis burkas. They’re ribbed for the pleasure that she’s not legally allowed to admit experiencing. XXL – I can wear them as galoshes.
  • Now what is Dark Money, that sounds vaguely racist, sir.
  • Dorgan: We’ve already learned an $11 Trillion lesson, are you the last one to know it? Colbert: I hope so, this is a no fact zone right here.

Was the ending a ‘True Lies’ reference?

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

  2. Gaia Faye says:

He and Sweetness are engaged now? That’s a tad unorthodox… but at least it won’t be a shotgun wedding.

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

  3. jennie says:

I voted for the Sotomayor is a racist / Toobin interview segment.

I thought both guests were great tonight – they didn’t try to be funny and kept their roll of disabusing “Stephen” of his ignorance and made for segments that were both entertaining *and* informative.

And way to go Nation on Donors Choose!

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

  4. Laaaura says:

It’s amazing how many donations have already been given to donorschoose.org. Way to go Nation!

I voted for the guest interview with Sen. Byron Dorgan. I really liked the interview and thought the guest did a nice job. And I like when Stephen was like, “What ELSE do you do in North Dakota?” Haha.

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

  5. Awesome Nation! And awesome episode; the two guests were fantastic and I agree with DB regarding developing the character of Sweetness. She should make an appearance more often.

And his farewell to us all. How will he be able to keep track of the million members of the Colbert Nation dancing?

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

  6. Tiger says:

I voted for the first part, because I thought that was the Sweetness part, and she’s one of my favorite characters in a long time! :D

  7. minnie in pdx says:

I loved the ending. . and yes, it did remind me of “True Lies”

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

  8. vigwig says:

Voted for the Sotomayor/Toobin segment, so many great and funny points were made. “She’s a shark!” :)

Also, did you notice the “no fact zone” quip in the Dorgan interview?

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

  9. I had to vote for the Persian Gulf segment solely for the penis burka joke. Condom galoshes sound hilarious!

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

    • Michele says:

Ha ha! I voted for that segment as well and for the same reason. Yes, mentally I am 12 years old.

Good show! It’s always funny when Sweetness makes an appearance. I enjoyed the segment on Sotomayor and the interview with Toobin. Nice surprise. I was getting very sleepy by the Dorgan interview but I did notice the NFZ shout out! :-)

And on a completely unrelated note, I finally broke down and joined Twitter to follow Mark Malkoff and DB.

    • juice says:

      That’s why I voted for WITW… segment, too! ;)

This show was a drink of fresh water after a long looong Colbert drought. And an appearance by Sweetness? Amazing!! And he proposed! How sweet ;)

    • Erika says:

I would pay money to see Stephen get down on one knee for Sweetness.

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

    • Nukaleu says:

WStanline, I love your username. I took that concept literally once and did a few tan sessions in a tanning bed with my WS strategically placed so I would have a nice, sharp line. It’s gone now, but it was a great way to get people to laugh at me for a while.

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

  11. Nukaleu says:

Stephen and Sweetness need a celebrity couple name. Sweeten? Stephness? Sweephen? I like Sweephen.

I voted for Sotomayor because Stephen addressed so many things about this issue that I wish were being addressed more. It drives me nuts that no one can pronounce her name. Is it really that hard? Anyone with minute Spanish knowledge could pronounce it correctly, and even if you don’t have that tiny luxury, there are some stabs at it that are so wrong they’re almost offensive. Before you go on TV to talk about someone, at least learn how to say their name.

    DEF-IN-ITE-LY NOT BAH-RAIIIN!!!

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

    • vigwig says:

Really, Sotomayor is pretty easy to say. It’s not Ahmadinejad!

BTW: I just posted a youtube parody about Sonia Sotomayor you might enjoy Nukaleu. You’ll find it on my channel which is my user name, vigwig.

  12. MaryLovesColbert says:

Sweetness! YES! My laptop’s namesake! Lol. I love when she makes an appearance. And the “Where in the World…” segment was particularly funny!

I must agree with everyone else – it’s wonderful to have the show back!! :D

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

  13. In Absentia says:

I love Sweetness! I’m so happy she made an appearance. And I do like the celebrity couple name “Sweephen.” I wonder if they ever made it to Reno for that “All U Can Eat” buffet? I hope they got plenty of banana pudding. Ha!

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

  14. smithalot says:

    *is still dancing for Stephen*

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

  15. Roseha says:

Funny show and – shallow moment – Stephen’s hair looked great again.

Before the show started I thought: I hope he mentions Conan’s first Tonight show and of course he did the shout-out in the opening, with the perfect follow-up “I believe he starts at midnight!” LOL.

Amen on Donorschoose.org going over the $100,000 mark! How great that Stephen could get his audience so fired up to accomplish this?

I would love to dance for Stephen but could only do it (well)in my dreams.

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

  16. jentaps says:

Great show. And I took his goodnight statement as a personal shoutout. :-)

    Hey!

Hit pause, and dance for me. I really need to put together an instructional vid for him. Like he has time to tap dance…

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0
