Zoners! Let’s change it up and talk I Like You. Get crafty with these questions:
1. First, have you ever tried any of Amy’s recipes? Which ones do you recommend? I must say, I’ve tried her signature cupcakes and they were delicious.
2. Do you have a favorite chapter of the book? Are there any tips that she offers that you think work?
3. Amy Sedaris is a frequenter of The Late Show with David Letterman and often offers tips to Dave where hilarity ensues. Do you have any favorite moments of her interviews/craft sessions with Letterman?
As always, keep in mind the rules of the club.
Thanks for participating. See you Sunday.
i love the entertaining for lumberjacks chapter. i mean, who really would be thoughtful enough to think about catering to lumberjacks?
generally, i love the layout of her book. when i went to a book signing, i brought my recipe-bestained copy of the book, minus the jacket, and amy was impressed by that, seeing as everyone else was buying fresh copies (at cover price!)but it thought to myself, she has hand-written pages just kind of scanned in there, and those are hard to read and stained too.:)
paul D. also writes a little blurb about his calf-stretcher device. apparently the man loves to have his calves stretched? i really love anything he writes, he is so funny and sometimes the under-appreciated member of the trifecta.
i haven’t tried making anything too hard (the lady baltimore cake looks tough but yummy), but i like the fact that she just shows you how to make simple things, and when you are starting cooking, that’s all you need.

I’ve only attempted making the cupcakes, which were indeed delicious.
Has anybody tried to figure out who might have filled out the index card questionnaires on page 136? I know the one at the bottom is David’s because it mentions Hugh, but am not sure about the rest. It’s fun to speculate, though!

I think the card above David’s is one that Amy filled out herself. It’s her handwriting and she has made jokes about being allergic to shellfish before.

Amy’s recipe book is the ONLY cookbook that I use. Yes, I use some recipes handed down to me from my mom and grandma and find a few online, but up until now I’ve never found a cookbook that works for me. I love Amy’s book because:
1. The book is so fun to look at that it’s hard to resist trying a recipe.
2. She makes cooking fun rather than a chore
3. The book is incredibly user-friendly. Instead of laying things out in a stringent fashion, the layout is very casual.
4. I’m still a kid at heart and this cookbook is just so adorable between the worm popping up everywhere, the illstrations and all the colors.
5. Most of all, you can tell that his cookbook is a LABOR OF LOVE. She poured so much of herself into this book between the picture of her as a kid in the beginning, the hand-written recipe cards she scanned in and the number of friends and family who contributed to the book. She shared her world with us!

Ah, typos. I meant “this cookbook” for #5.

Ooops…I forgot to answer some of the questions:)
I’ve made the meatballs, chicken on the stove, steak diane, blueberry pie and her signature cupcakes (frosting is to die for!). All have been fabulous, but I would really recommend the meatballs! I made them for my birthday party and people were crazy about them!
I just love the picture of Amy as a kid standing by the mushroom in the beginning of the book.
Everyone knows that Colbert’s Shrimp Paste is on page 235, right? I must admit it sounds rather unappetizing and I haven’t tried it, but if anyone has, let me know;)
One of my favorite things is how the fake worm with the smiley face just keeps popping up in different food dishes! It’s sort of like an alternative version of Where’s Waldo?
As far as Letterman goes, I loved it when she asked Dave for the tassels from his shoes and returned next time wearing them as earrings:)

I’ve tried about 40 recipes from I Like You so far, and almost all of them have been real crowd pleasers. My absolute favorites–the recipes I keep making again and again–are chicken of the taverns, rum punch dazzler (except I use coconut rum and add some grenadine), long neck ritas, meatballs & marinara sauce, her cupcakes & frosting, spanakopita, pastitsio, bailiwick gingersnaps, Aunt Joyce’s brownies, Michael’s key lime pie, tiddlywinks toadstool pie, Gina’s hot nuts (what I’ve made for my mom for Mother’s Day for the past two years, and she loooooves them) and yogurt spa-ghetti. And naturally, I’m partial to the Katie’s smack snacks for rabbits since that’s my recipe (even though that’s more of my bunnies’ preference; not mine, haha).
I also really loved the Rooster’s chicken in phyllo, but I’ve only made it once so far because it was a lot of work. Amy’s preface to that recipe makes me laugh really hard (like how her brother pounds his chicken with a plastic coffee mug he bought at the beach, lol).
I have some photos of the results of a few of my recipe attempts on Flickr: http://www.flickr.com/search/?q=sedaris%20food&w=98403525%40N00
