One of my favorite things about Stephen’s willingness to attend and participate in events like yesterday’s commencement at MUSC is that we usually get a flurry of articles surrounding them, and it looks like the MUSC graduation address is no exception. Charleston’s Post and Courier did a brief write-up about the event here, but it’s their interview with Stephen (below) that really tickled me:
Satirist talks about dad’s role at MUSC
Colbert also explains why he doesn’t miss George Bush
Saturday, May 16, 2009Q: What is your father’s legacy at Medical University of South Carolina?
A: One of the great things about doing this speech is that it gave me an opportunity and a reason to find out about his career.
He was the first person who really encouraged research by the faculty and the students, who tried to turn this into a research facility.
I have been told that one of the things he gave very quickly to the university was a sense of ambition. He would not be surprised by what the university has become because he knew this was possible.
People have been kind enough to say the success of the university today is based on the foundation he laid in giving the university that ambition.
. . .
Okay, I’ve got to say it again: Stephen’s brain sounds like such a fun place to be! How many TV personalities (not named Neil deGrasse Tyson, anyway) just casually drop references to concepts like “what astrophysicists call the Schwarzschild limited radius” into their question and answer sessions? Read the rest of the article and you’ll see what I mean.
What a fun thing to wake up to on an otherwise dreary Saturday!
Wonderful interview. Whatever young Stephen may have dreamed of becoming and doing, being the speaker to the graduate class of the medical school his father helped create was probably not one of them — yet it might have been the greatest honor of all. God bless you and the Colbert family. :)

This was absolutely wonderful. I agree that it must be fun inside his brain. I love that he can make such obscure references like that. He definitely seems well read!
Anyway, thanks for posting this!

What Honorary Degree did they award Sir Stephen Colbert, DFA … can we call him Dr. Sir Stephen Colbert, DFA and ask him to diagnose our mysterious rashes at cocktail parties now??? LOL

Thanks for posting this interview. I always enjoy listening to (out-of-character) Stephen. What a full heart he must have this weekend.

… wonder what Stephen could do with this one, especially after his remarks (or lack thereof!) about Dubya.

What a great interview. Smart and serious. I love how he doesn’t miss GWB. I don’t either! So, we have that in common. :-)
