Hello Zoners! I hope everyone is doing well on this fine day and is enjoying our current week of shows. As we know from our previous posts, Stephen gave the commencement address at MUSC today, honoring his father’s former school. Well, in honor of this event, I dug up an old 2000 clip from the Daily Show archives where Stephen first offers his commencement speech services. Between the oblique references to a certain stalk-ee and the absolutely adorable character breaks by both Jon and Stephen, this clip is a real gem.

Commencement Address – Mom and Dad’s money wasn’t wasted after all — you’ve got a reporter from the .6 Nielsen-rated basic cable fake news show speaking at your commencement.

Haha, I’ve never seen that video before. Wow, was that Bill Cosby impersonation funny, especially with the laughing.

No one well-known or memorable spoke at my graduation, sadly.

That’s was super funny and adorable. I thought the Cosby imitation was great :) Thanks for adding a little more sunshine to my Sunday.

Hahaha! Oh my God, that was hilarious! I’d never seen this, so thanks for sharing! The Cosby impression was great. :P And it’s always fun to see Stephen’s absurdity paired with Jon’s patience in dealing with the ridiculousness.

A friend of mine went to her sister’s graduation at Bradley University where the commencement speaker was better known Congressman Aaron Shock. I was told he mentioned Colbert giving him a hard time on his show.

My nephew graduated from William and Mary in 2004 and the speaker was none other than Jon Stewart. I’ve sat through a lot of graduations and it was easily the best and most entertaining speech I’ve ever seen.

Oh my god, you’re so lucky! At my graduation, we didn’t have anyone cool. We just had the president and dean speak, and they were easily the most boring and recycled speeches I’ve ever heard. =)

  7. When I graduated in 2001, Jersey’s own Jon Bon Jovi gave our commencement address. Despite the fact that some of our professors boycotted the notion of giving him an honorary doctorate, the speech was quite nice…and I got to meet him and shake his hand, which wasn’t too shabby either. : )

  8. In Absentia says:

I really like this clip. However, IMHO, the best bit Stephen ever did about graduation was on the now-defunct show “Tough Crowd with Colin Quinn” (which was ironically replaced by “The Colbert Report”). That bit was enough to get Stephen “kicked out of Thailand.”

  9. ColbertFaninChicago says:

My commencement speaker at Northwestern University in 1986 was then-Secretary-of-State George Schultz. OH WAIT! That was STEPHEN’S commencement speaker, too! Woo-hoo! :::: confetti ::::

Northwestern has done OK for itself with Senator McCain in 2005 and then-Senator Obama in 2006, but they’re still holding out for Stephen to be the commencement speaker! The students would love it. He’s the most relevant alum right now.
