Episode 5067 (5/14/2009)

epguideiconEPISODE NUMBER: 5067 (May 14, 2009)
GUEST: Yusuf
SEGMENTS: 35,000 year old statue, Yahweh or No Way, Donors Choose
VIDEOS: Thursday, May 14, 2009 (Full access video)

I enjoyed this light, fun episode. There was something about Stephen speaking caveman about the 35,000 year old “porn stash” that made me giggle.

And can I say, yet again, that I am quite proud to be a lifelong resident of the great state of Texas, but I will also state that I voted for Kinky Friedman, and I wish Governor Rick Perry would shut his friggin’ piehole and stop making my beloved and wonderful state the butt of late night pundit jokes.

I adore any episode where Stephen features drawings from children. I love how he simultaneously honors and jibes the works of art. While I felt that the interview with Yusuf was more of the same kind of “easy” interviews Stephen tends to do with musicians, I really enjoyed the musical number. Yusuf has such a soothing voice. I have a bit of a secret guilty pleasure – I love 70’s soft rock. Give me Barry Manilow, the Carpenters, Cat Stephens, Christopher Cross. I adore that sound. It was a perfectly mellow note to wind down my hectic day.

How did you all like the episode?

  • Jim, let’s protect the kids. That’s better.
  • I feel terrible for this sculpture, nobody wants their porn stash found 35,000 years after they die. I’m sure he told his caveman friends, “When me die, break porno statue in six pieces and bury in cave.”
  • Or a cocker spaniel wearing glasses, Linda says Jesus.
  • This bread is my body. Cover it with Kraft American cheese, place it in the broiler for ten minutes, and enjoy.
  • Apparently he missed the part in the bible about sparing the rod.
  • Father PILF – HAHAHAHAH!
  • Sorry, Father, but Catholics with options are Protestant.
  • You cannot blame God for chatting her up. i mean, look at his usual date [Pope Benedict]. She has a great personality.
  • Which means that somewhere out there, there’s a soldier with a pants shaped hole in his pants ..keep you cool in the desert.
  • I guess that means her father is Governor Rick Perry.
  • That’s a camel right there.
  • Once you are a receptacle of your audience’s love, that’s your job.

cute drawings! I always smile when either donorschoose or this Persian Gulf trip come up because it’s so fantastic. so that was my favorite part.

the interview was really nice too though. sometimes the musical guests don’t make for great interviews but definitely not in this case. also I liked the comments about loyalty to fans! :)

The episode was great, but what I really wanted to comment on is that at DonorsChoose.org, donations in honor of the Coast Guard have gone up from $61 to over $1,400! That, Nation, is the Colbert Bump in action… :)

Excellent! I have to point out that the coast guard was founded by Alexander Hamilton in 1790 as the “revenue cutters” cutters being a type of sailing vessel – they collected taxes for the Treasury.

Did anyone else notice the “yahweh or no way” graphics? I think they are new.

Loved the art from the kids–especially the detailed drawing from Stephen C. in NY. That drawing could raise some serious cash on ebay!

Cute drawings! Especially the scribble that’s Stephen’s hair. :) First time to hear Yusuf perform and I must agree with DB. His voice is soothing. Lovely way to end a Friday night.

Good for Stephen, bumping his DonorsChoose.org challenge like that again. In fairness to the Coasties, I’m pretty sure the projects for that branch of the service were only added a couple days ago (I’ve been eyeballing the challenge page periodically), so they’ve got a lot of catching up to do. Better late than never on adding them to the challenge, though; I’m hoping I can afford to donate again soon.

I actually felt like the show didn’t quite find its usual groove last night. There was some funny stuff, as expected, but it didn’t flow as well as usual, IMO. And did anyone see Yusuf’s subtle pointing at Stephen during Stephen’s “victory lap” over to the interview area? I got the impression he really isn’t too familiar with the show, but maybe that was just me.

I loved, LOVED the performance, though. I can’t hear him sing without thinking of Harold and Maude, which was one of my favorite movies when I was in middle school (one of the title characters hangs himself during the opening credits? HAHAHAHAHA!!!), so there was a little bit of nostalgia in there, I think. But anyhow, he has a lovely voice, and I’m glad he’s using it to perform again.

Even though the interviews with musical guests can be hit or miss, I usually enjoy them. I’m looking forward to seeing Green Day on next Thursday, that’s for sure!

Green Day will be on!
How very cool. I remember the old Cat Stephens and found this song rather blah. For “message” songs I’d rather listen to Leonard Cohen.

Green Day?! WOOT! I loved Harold and Maude too. And I’ve always loved Cat Stevens/Yusuf.

I voted for the DonorsChoose segment because the drawings were adorable and I really cracked up at “Stevie C.’s” drawing. And it’s quickly become one of my favorite charities.

Although I always find funny things in them, I’ve felt several of the shows recently have been a bit “off”. I’m hoping it’s all just due to them gearing up for the trip to the Persian Gulf.

Hmmh. Oddly enough, no sooner do I post the above about the Coast Guard than I go to the page and notice that they seem to have disappeared from the “Support Our Troops’ Children” page again. Curious.
