Howdy, all, from your friendly neighborhood pinch-blogger. In the interest of getting you this guide a little sooner, I thought I’d try to handle the notable quotes, etc. So if you find yourself missing DB’s usual commentary, I do apologize and promise that you’ll be back to your regular recapper soon. Onward to the notable quotes!
- I am with Gibbs on this one. That is so rude! You never saw this kind of thing going on with the Bush Administration; the male prostitutes they planted in the press corps were very respectful.
- That is CBS’s Bill Plante balls out taking the call. Frankly, I have not seen that much bravery in front of a red-faced tank since Tiananmen Square.
- Just the idea of this soda tax makes me sick to my stomach. Well … that, and the thirty cans of soda I had today. Nobody shake me.
- It’s a one quarter percent per ounce tax on soda pop; why shouldn’t I blow my brains out? [Belch] That was one of my more articulate arguments.
- By the way, is it bad when your urine comes out carbonated? ‘Cause I have a friend who wants to know.
- Look, folks, the fact is, soft drinks don’t cause obesity. And it’s not just me saying that, it’s also soft drink lobbyists. [Clip of lobbyist saying soft drinks are just “fun” to drink] Yeah, things that are fun are never bad for you! We learned that from unprotected sex.
- Nation, we must protest this soda tax. And don’t worry, I learned something from last month’s protests. This one won’t have a name with an embarrassing double meaning like “Tea Bagging Parties”. No, I’m callin’ these “Coke Parties!”
- You see, he’s got that dollar bill rolled up his nostril because he’s paying out the nose. And he’s holding up the razor blade of small government that will cut our taxes.
- Nation, this is going to be a great protest. We’re gonna have dancers; it’s gonna be one long all-night Coke-fueled party! I’ve already signed up some big names: Mayor Marion Barry, Gary Busey, Boy George and the extras from Entourage. I’m telling you, we’re all already twitching with excitement.
- Nation, it’s no secret that we super-wealthy drive the economy. Buying just one alabaster bidet puts a hundred times more money into the market than whatever kind of bidet the rabble use.
- But we can’t just throw our money away on expensive products that we’ll pass down to our children. No! We must also throw it away on expensive products that we will flush down the toilet.
- Well, here in New York, some restaurants offer single dishes that cost $1000 apiece. But lately, the four-figure meal has hit hard times.
- For the lobster, was its family held next to the pot to watch it being boiled? … Okay, for $1000, I’d like to have that happen.
- This is the American Dream. When our ancestors were at Ellis Island – not mine, yours? – there was one thing that sustained them, and that was the thought of dropping $1000 bucks on an omelette.
- This is one of the best $1000 pizzas I’ve ever had. It’s right up there. When I think of pizza, I think “room temperature”, I think “fish roe”, and I think “cashing in the college fund”.
- To match the carbon footprint in this sundae, how many times would I have to fly a Klondike Bar around the world?
- [Reacting to the news that the restaurant hadn’t sold a $1000 sundae since November] Wow. Because the economy has gone down or because $1000 is a criminal amount to charge for a dessert?
- If I gave you another $1000, could I make someone poor watch me eat it?
- My guest tonight is the author of In Defense of Food, so I put barbed wire around his fruit plate.
- You say we make food “fake”. What’s wrong with fake food? We start with fake food, you know? Put away your breast; give the baby formula.
- Pollan: Well, there’s a great example. We have been trying to synthesize breast milk for 150 years, and we still don’t know how to do it. And babies on formula don’t do as well as babies on breast milk, and we don’t know why.
- Stephen: Were you breast-fed?
- Pollan: [searches memory] I don’t know. My mom’s here; I don’t know. We could ask her.
- Stephen: [facing audience] Was he breast-fed?
- Pollan and Stephen: No? No!
- Pollan: *grimacing*
- Stephen: [laughing] You! I demand you apologize to your mother! Apologize to your mother, sir!
- Pollan: [cracking up] It was great; it was great!
- So, as long as I cook for myself, I’m in pretty good shape?
- Pollan: Yeah. Making that one change in your diet would do so much for your health.
- Stephen: I just want to make sure that –
- Pollan: — And deal with the pasty complexion … [goes silent as audience “oohs!” and Stephen stares him, fighting a smile]
- Stephen: Mmm-hmm. You notice I do have wavy hair, Mr. Pollan!
- Pollan: [laughing]
- Stephen: This is what high-fructose corn syrup gets you. Physician, heal thyself!
- Well, that’s it for The Report, everybody. By the way, did you notice the theme running through tonight’s show? It was “Stephen Colbert is awesome.” Goodnight!

Wow! I thought I would be late in commenting! I really enjoyed the running theme(s) last night: food and Stephen is awesome. Such great comments and talking points, Ms Interpreted- Well done! I don’t know where to start!
I consider myself grad school poor and would gladly accept $1000 to watch Stephen eat–if I could ask a few questions during the meal!
Sidenote to DB- Glad you were able to see J. Coulton! I am jealous! Being relatively new to the site, I am amazed you are able to post so much, so soon, so consistently–do you plan your time off around the taping schedule? :)

So *that’s* what happened during the interview, before the “…apologize to your mother!” lol
I missed it.
Thanks for the very thorough recap, Ms I.

Look Mr. Pollan, you do not call Stephen pasty…especially on his birthday! I was so mad, but I realize he probably said it in jest and was attacking “Stephen” more than Stephen. I just get so defensive when anyone attacks him;)
Do you think the $1000 meals during Colbert Platinum were complimentary since TCR bascially provided free advertising? I know TCR could pay for it, but it makes me cringe to think of any person or entity paying that amount.
One of the most satisfying things for me on TCR is when Stephen critiques the advertisers for his show. Tonight it was his poking fun at the mega-cheeto ads during his interview with Michael Pollan. Those ads drive me up the wall and I hope they disappear in the near future!
All in all, great episode. I like it when Stephen wears lavender ties. He looked sharp!

I cringed when Stephen drank all those cans of Sierra Mist. My teeth can only take so much soda before they start to hurt, so I’m actually reducing my intake. Haha. I can’t believe soda lobbyists are using that “fun” argument.
Thousand-dollar dishes? Scary. I can never imagine dropping a thousand anything on just one thing. And all that gold on Stephen’s face! Oh my…
And yes, Stephen, you are awesome! :)

Haha. I can’t believe soda lobbyists are using that “fun” argument.
My favorite part of that clip was the bald-faced lie that sugary drinks have nothing to do with obesity. Evidently you can never have too much high-fructose corn syrup.

Between the soda and all that gratuitous caviar I was getting nauseous watching Stephen eat all that stuff. I hope he just had a few bites for the camera only. $1000 for that? Ick. I loved it when he burped, I have two older brothers and it felt like home. :)

Ha ha! Embarrassing fact about myself. My father taught me how to make myself burp when I was a little girl because he thought it was funny. I can still burp like a champ! And all that soda and caviar was making my stomach churn too. It was funny, but gross. Like when he ate the cat food.
I enjoyed the interview with Pollan and feel he has some good insights. A lot of our food is so processed it’s not really food anymore. One of my friends has read his book and I’ll have to borrow it from her and throw it on the stack of books I want to read.

I haven’t read his new one yet, but I thought The Omnivore’s Dilemma was outstanding. I remember reading it and thinking at one point, “I’m reading about the evolution of corn, and I’m finding it fascinating. How is this possible?” It really makes you stop and think about what you eat.
I still have terrible eating habits, but I think they may, just possibly, be less awful than they once were because of books like Pollan’s.

Had to watch Colbert Platinum twice trying to fathom how much money one person could spend to eat just one meal or dessert. And snorting gold…now I’ve seen it all!
Loved his ‘birthday’ suit tonight, with the violet tie, he looked really nice, and the wavy hair was perfect. Has he worn violet/purple lately?

I like soda, unfortunately.
I find it very yummy.
I like Pepsi (and Diet Pepsi, and Pepsi Max and Wild Cherry Pepsi) and Dr Pepper and Sprite and Sierra Mist and Mug Root Beer and Grape Crush and Orange Crush. oh dear.
(fortunately I don’t keep soda in the fridge. this helps prevent frequent or excessive indulgence.)
anyway I really liked Colbert Platinum. I pretty much always love when Stephen is out of the studio doing stuff like that.

Colbert Platinum totally rocked. As nauseating as it was watching him eat all that stuff, nothing was as stomach-turning as watching him eat the can of Fancy Feast. As he put the food in the glass I’m cringing behind a pillow yelling, “No, Stephen, don’t do it!” Hopefully all this show goodness will carry us all over until our boys return from break. Happy Memorial Day vaca, everyone!

I’m confused; were you thinking the break starts on Monday? Next week starts out slow (Meghan McCain, sigh), but it ends with a bang (Green Day!). New shows, through and through, at any rate.

I could have sworn they were off next week as well. I thought the calendar said so, but it’s changed now. Oh well. Glad they’re back next week!

I couldn’t vote today — I thought every segment was just great, and they worked together as a whole even more than usual. The continuing thread of Sierra Mist was just brilliant, and the pundits’ hissy-fits about the soda tax … oh my.
I really enjoyed the $1,000 food segment for some reason. Stephen is pretty nimble and quick on his feet when he wants to get away! lol. I loved the shot of him with gold all over his face. The things you get to do as a celebrity! ha!
I thought the interview was great. I’ve not read any of Pollan’s books, but every time I hear him speak I’m totally on board. I loved the easy rapport between them; and the breast-milk exchange was hilarious! Pollan seems to respond very well to Stephen’s style of interview – it works for him.
That was a really interesting concept about isolating one factor of a plant, and comparing corn –> high fructose corn syrup to coca leaves –> crack. I’m not sure it’s a perfect analogy, but it does highlight the concept quite well.
Happy (belated) Birthday Sir Dr. Colbert!

Coming in late, but I absolutely loved Wednesday’s show! I really felt Stephen was “treating” himself for his birthday with all the food and drink, though I’m sure he didn’t eat much of the mega-bucks meals and I only saw one Sierra Mist can with actual soda coming out. (Could be wrong about the latter though).
I loved the Michael Pollan interview! He & Stephen were having such a great time and I hope he returns.
