Originally published 07:27 p.m., May 13, 2009BOULDER, Colo. — Stephen Colbert, host of Comedy Central’s “The Colbert Report,” received a surprise birthday present from a Boulder guitar shop Wednesday.
Colbert had a 1973 Martin D41 guitar presented to him at his “Colbert Report” staff birthday party, said Boulder musician Rob Ober, who sold the guitar to the show.
“They’re presenting it to Stephen as a surprise,” said Ober.
Ober, whose business Guitar Desires sells instruments and other music equipment online, said everyone at his company was thrilled that the show had bought the guitar for its host.

This is so sweet. Considering the price of the guitar, it’s extra sweet of his staff to get him this for his birthday! I’m just so touched that they heard him complaining about his current guitar so they decided to get him a new one. So thoughtful! :)
And, it tickles my heartstrings that Stephen plays the guitar. <3

I heard an audience member yell out “happy birthday” during the opening but he made no mention of it. I thought we’d get a balloon drop. I guess he wants to keep his real birthday away from “Stephen Colbert,” who is probably sick right now from all that caviar and Sierra Mist.
