epguideiconEPISODE NUMBER: 5065 (May 12, 2009)
GUESTS: Julia Sweig, Ron Howard
SEGMENTS: Ron Howard, Cuba, Stephen’s Sound Advice: Rebranding of the GOP
VIDEOS: Tuesday, May 12, 2009 (Full access video)

European viewers – remember that hack I shared on Tuesday? Yeah, I’ll be adding it to the guide every day. But let’s keep it on the down low, okay, kiddos? Shhh … moving on.

I remember the Catholic “boycott” for “The DaVinci Code”, and more importantly, I remember not wanting to see that movie was Hanks’s hair. What was up with that?! I might have to see this one though. Can’t miss something with Dave Pasquesi. Oh, and Pasquesi shout out FTW!

I loved the hypocrisy pointed out by Stephen in the travel poll. “How can you believe any pollster who gives you a 12-hour layover in Phoenix?” Tee hee! And speaking of hypocrisy, I enjoyed the Stephen’s Sound Advice. Is it wrong to enjoy the Prince shout-out as much as I did? And next time someone updates the ‘Colbert Report’ drinking game, we need to add “Drink every time Stephen mentions Twitter.” The La Cucaracha reference was deliciously politically incorrect.

I got the feeling that Ron Howard was not quite sure what was going on when the interview started. But he lightened up a bit as the interview went going. And again – PASQUESI!! Rock on.

What were some of your favorite lines that I may have missed in my summary here?

  • That boycott wasn’t just effective, it was rhythm method effective.
  • I hope I’m translating this correctly.
  • I’ve been working on that accent all day.
  • Cuba, you heard him. Stop playing Hide the Fist with Phil Gingrey.
  • All these years that we’ve been waiting for Fidel to buy the farm, he could have been buying the farm.
  • Rebranding. The GOP needs to make painful, soul-searching, superficial changes to their image without altering anything inside. In short, give the party a full Kenny Rogers.
  • That sounds painful.
  • Kentucky Fried Chicken didn’t want customers equating their product with unhealthy fried food, so they became KFC. Now who knows how they make their chicken?
  • And who can forget when Hostess cupcakes were better known as Dr. Granger’s Snacktime Asbestos Treats?
  • You don’t want to be associated with an animal that your own courageous environmental policies are driving to extinction.
  • Geico has their talking lizard. But you already tried that [John McCain]. Geico also has their talking caveman, but you’ve tried that too [Fred Thompson].
  • “Dominus vobiscum”. …. Your line is “Et cum spiritu tuo.”
  • Are there any Sudokus in this one because I love sudokus.
  • Did I just give away the ending? Is Robert Langdon ‘Jesus’?”
  • You’ve directed Apollo 13, you directed these two thrillers about the Catholic church. This one’s got the pope in it. Why not combine Apollo 13 and the pope and make a movie about the pope in space. You can call it Space Pope.

I was told by my mom I was a “rhythm baby.”

Happy Birthday, Stephen. ;D

Ha ha! I giggled at that too. I’ve known a few women who’ve tried it and they all ended up pregnant within a few years no matter how meticulous they were.

I loved the Dave Pasquesi shout out! I also agree with withe what Argon posted below that Hanks probably would have done better on TCR and Howard better on TDS.

My favorite segment was Stephen’s Sound Advice. Unfortunately, many of the ideas coming out of the GOP, aren’t much better than those offered by Stephen.

Ron Howard always seems like such a nice guy. I felt like he wasn’t sure exactly how to respond to some of Stephen’s questions/remarks but I still enjoyed the interview last night.

Happy Birthday to our fearless leader, Sir Dr. Stephen T. Colbert, DFA!

I was going to post a comment here earlier just because the reCAPTCHA read “The redeemer,” haha.

Tonight’s TDS and TCR reminded me of the time various groups here tried to have The DaVinci Code banned because aside from the film being blasphemous, they claimed it was pornographic. There were also calls to have the books destroyed. The hysteria surrounding the book and the film was really kind of strange, in that our church leaders didn’t have enough faith in us that we won’t take what we read in Dan Brown’s novel at face value and turn our back on the Church.

It’s almost the end of Stephen’s birthday here in my part of the world. Many happy returns of the day to the honorable and fabulous Sir Dr. Stephen T. Colbert, DFA. :)

It was funny that TDS had Tom Hanks on promoting A&D then TCR had Ron Howard on promoting A&D, but somehow I got the feeling that they should’ve switched interviews since Ron was stammering a lot, he probably would’ve more comfortable and done better on TDS while Tom most likely would’ve stood up better to Stephen’s onslaught and been able to give some back.

Yes! I completely agree, I love Tom Hanks so would have been great seeing him and Stephen sparring.

I voted for the Julia Sweig interview, not sure why, just really enjoyed it!

Another fun show. I voted for Stephen’s Sound Advice, but I also enjoyed the interview with Julia Sweig and the piece on Cuba (“rhythm method effective” – ha!). I wonder if she had been nervous (it didn’t show in the interview, I thought – she did well) – at the end, Stephen put his hands over hers – like he was saying “well done!”.

Ah, mention of Elian Gonzales brought back memories of the great Even Stevphen piece with Steve Carell dissolving into tears.

Speaking of Dave Pasquesi, has anyone heard about the fate of The Factory? Spike took down the show’s website so I’m guessing it doesn’t look good, but I’m just curious if anyone’s heard anything definitive.

Happy birthday, oh purple-mounted one!
Cute show…”ah giv it-ah three popes”…:D

Wheeere’s the cameraaaa…? hahaha!

But since the Mass hasn’t been done in latin since the early sixties (as far as I know…lapsed you know), I’m not sure why you’d expect Ron Howard to know the latin for ‘and with your spirit’ :P

Thanks to NFZ for the latin/engish translation of the latin bit! =D

Rhythm method effective LOL

geez…non-sequiturs much…

I loved Stephen’s Italian accent when reading the vatican review. Haha! And how he turned and was talking to the wrong camera for a few seconds lol.
