Episode 5058 (4/29/2009)

epguideiconEPISODE NUMBER: 5058 (April 29, 2009)
GUEST: David Kessler
SEGMENTS: I’s on Edjukashun, Enemy Swine: A Pigcalypes Now: The Coming Oink-Mageddon
VIDEOS: Wednesday, April 29, 2009

I really liked the new “I’s on Edjukashun” segment. I especially loved the Pop Quizzes and the little riddles that went along with each segment. I’m glad he’s bringing to light the hypocrisy behind criticizing Americorps. I wish Americorps would have been around when I was in college – I would have been all over that opportunity.

The new Apigcalypse graphic was hysterical – I love when anything blows up in a graphic for no reason whatsoever, and exploding pigs are classic. And I’m pretty sure I’m the only person in America that’s not afraid of Swine Flu – and the first death in the country was in Texas. Now if Ebola was spreading, I’d be terrified. But flu? Um, not so much. Bring it on, bacon!

What did all of you think of the episode?

  • Thank you, I did say that well.
  • President Obama got exactly what he wanted, an adorable new senator.
  • Mahmoud Ahma-we-come-from-the-land-of-ice-and-snow-inejad
  • See me after class.
  • We all know know textbooks have a liberal bias. Why else would they insist we read from left to right?
  • This textbook actually expects you to *read* it in order to gain information! All that stuff should be in that title.
  • The American Vision Islamo-Fascist Muslims Commited 9/11 P.S. FDR Was A Jerk!
  • You know a book is left wing propaganda if it mentioned Ronald Reagan’s pregnancy.
  • Hard drugs .. I’m talking ibuprofen.
  • Mostly singles, although if he really shook it, he’d get a fiver.
  • Well that’s fine for now, but what about summer? That’s tube top season?
  • Yes, it is the new Black Death. SARS is so two years ago. I wouldn’t be caught dead with it.
  • Where’s the guy. He’s sick?! Oh my God. Fine, I’ll take questions, but not from the audience. I don’t want them to breathe on me.
  • I’m not saying that Enzyte will cure swine flu, I’m just saying your Johnson will be so mammoth, you won’t care what the hell you got.
  • DO YOU HAVE SWINE FLU? Now you are safe and can be heard.
  • One of the earliest symptoms is tasting like bacon. So if you suspect someone is infected, give them a good lick.
  • That is so beautiful. And so tragic, she has swine flu.
  • DOOOOOOMED!
  • Are you saying Bin Laden’s behind my Fry Daddy?
  • You bet, like a Christmas tree, give me some of that.
  • Really? Did you used to be the fat fat the water rat?
  • Rehab? No, no, no!

This is my favorite episode so far this week. I laughed out loud a lot during the show, which is always a good sign. I especially liked the “I’s on Edjukashun” segment and the enemy swine graphic.

I’m not afraid of the swine flu either, DB. I thought I was the only one in America who wasn’t freaking out over it.

I’m totally with you on the swine flu — the media is really sending everyone into a tizzy.

I’m not terribly concerned about it either and I’m so happy to see both TCR and TDS thoroughly skewering the media over their hysteria-inducing coverage of Swine Flu. Love it! That’s why I voted for the Pigcalyse Now segment. That was hilarious! I also enjoyed the education segment quite a bit. The interview was dry but I had just read an article on Sunday afternoon about Kessler and his book. Most of his findings didn’t get covered in the interview but from what I read the article, a lot of it rang very true for me. Interesting stuff.

I really like the new education segment. As a social studies teacher, I particularly enjoyed the textbook evaluation section. We wouldn’t want our students to actually read and piece together information, would we?!

Most teachers realize that textbooks are just a resource–not the end all be all of information for students! They need to be supplemented with outside readings, videos, primary source documents, etc. so students are presented with a variety of viewpoints and can begin to formulate and piece together history in a cognitive manner. So many of the projects on donorschoose.org for social studies include resources such as these to help students actively engage with history. Ok! I will step off my soapbox, now! :)

Great episode, I also laughed out loud several times. Loved the ending of the interview when Kessler suggested rehab and Stephen sang, “NO, no, no!”

I loved the Amy Winehouse reference too. : ) As soon as Kessler said “rehab”, I started singing that song in my head too. Hehehe…

I’s on Edjukashun gets my vote. When I entered college, our history and lit teachers immediately set us straight and debunked the long-held belief (still taught in our elementary/high schools, unfortunately) that Ferdinand Magellan “discovered” the Philippines in 1521. It’s kind of heartbreaking that we don’t know enough or a huge chunk of our own country’s history. We had to read it from mostly foreign scholars. Long story short, after graduation I taught intro to lit for a year and told my students the same thing. I also told them to research and read and ask questions. We always learn more if we learn to also look beyond the pages of anything we read, be they textbooks or fiction or poetry or a newspaper article.

The interview could have been better. David Kessler’s impassiveness was kind of weighty that it wasn’t funny, though he did make some good points. How Stephen managed to sustain the segment was incredible.

I have to give my vote to A Pigcalypes Now: The Coming Oink-Mageddon, mostly due to the throwback reference to the Democralypse Now segment that aired during the election last year. Kessler’s book sounded really interesting — I may put that on my list of “to read” library books.

Did anyone notice that Jon stole Stephen’s “Roe v. Wade” joke last night when Jon was going off on Michael Steele and making the mama jokes? I think he tweaked it a little, but it was basically the same joke. Well, at least Jon and Stephen are part of the same comedy family so it’s not that bad:)

Wow, the R.A.P.S poll pretty much captured my feeling about the best segment last night, which was that it was a darn close race between “I’s on Edjukashun” and “Enemy Swine.” I personally believe “I’s on Edjukashun” won by a hair.

I liked Edjukashun the best! it was surprisingly nice…I think it reminded me a cheating death a bit, jumping from point to point and saying funny things.

also, I noticed they spelled Britain wrong in credit area for thee Britain’s Got Talent video they used. lol, like it matters. but just had to show off how I got my I’s on the spellings.
