epguideiconEPISODE NUMBER: 5054 (April 22, 2009)
GUEST: Ira Glass
SEGMENTS: Esteban Colberto, Where in the World and When in Time is Stephen Colbert Going to Be in the Persian Gulf?
VIDEOS: Wednesday, April 22, 2009

Happy Earth Day everyone! To do my part to help with saving the earth, I recycled today’s page of my “I Am America (And So Can You!)” 2009 Calendar. I absolutely love any appearance by my favorite alternative personality of Stephen, Esteban Colberto. Love me some Esteban. I love how every time he’s on the show, his pants get tackier and tackier. It’s also hysterical how Esteban is a completely different color than Stephen.

I quite enjoyed the camaraderie, bordering on bromance, between Ira Glass and Stephen tonight. Glass is such a genuine person, and even though there wasn’t a lot of substance in the interview, it was really entertaining to see the play between the two men.

What did you all think of the show? Do you love Esteban as much as I do? And does Killer holding hands with Stephen make you as nervous as it makes me? Can’t wait to hear your comments!

EDIT:
I wanted to push out this comment from Dee, which I thought was a very interesting bit of trivia:

When I was at the taping long back, Stephen said that when he does the Esteban character, he has someone standing off camera saying those lines, which he then repeats. But he doesn’t read from the prompter, which makes it so flawless and funny…

  • Evidently I’m allergic to that much love.
  • Vomit, come on up!
  • One dollar. Is it possible to bid less than $1?
  • Barack Obama jumped aboard his smile-powered friendship train and rode the rainbow rails to Latin America. Arriba!
  • A leftist History book, and I realize I’m being triple redundant there.
  • In our defense, they had so much gold. Shiny!
  • The real question here is Did our president give Hugo Chavez a reacharound?
  • Their wildest dreams include buying a gumball.
  • But it involves the part of the pig intestine you cannot eat and a fistful of hair from the floor of a public restroom.
  • You only have one industry worth investing in. Drugs. Your demand fuels our drug trade. Watch me.
  • This map is before the continents split up. YOKO!! “I think you should be your own continent.”
  • It’s one of the few runways in the world where you can land the Air Force’s new F-88 Overcompensator.
  • But they don’t say anything about O’Douls and the Talbot’s catalog. It’s going to be a crazy week. Ooh, capri pants.
  • Thank you so much for looking like you. Cause you’ve really nailed the Ira Glass look. You could do Rachel Maddow in a pinch.
  • Do you normally run cartoons on your radio show?
  • You know, all you public radio guys, it’s all about the cash, isn’t it?
  • Ira: The problem is the thing you’re making fun of is the way I actually talk.

I realize that I may be in the minority tonight, but even though appearances by Esteban are always nice, “Where in the World…” was the best segment for me. And the Yoko line (along with the subsequent ad-lib) sealed the deal. That had me in stitches.

Shouldn’t the Ira Glass interview be in the poll?

Yes, it should. After doing guides for a few nights in a row, I get a bit sleep deprived sometimes and typos happen. Thanks for the catch – at least I was able to fix it before I went to work.

DB, you already go above and beyond the call of duty. Thanks though!

I voted for Esteban Colberto. Oh how I love him. That little clip they showed at the end was funny, when one of the chicas fell, then took down Esteban y la otra chica.

The “YOKO!!” line and Stephen’s little extra comment was really funny too.

Your sudden change to espanol (“Estaban y la otra chica”) is making me giggle nonstop.

In spite of all the other funny segments last night, I had to vote for the interview with Ira Glass. I enjoy listening to This American Life when I get the chance and it was fun seeing him on TCR. And he looks pretty much exactly like what I pictured. He and Stephen seemed to be having a lot of fun together. A close runner-up would be the Where in the Persian Gulf segment. “YOKO!!!!” LOL!

The Esteban Colberto blooper was the best part! We need more bloopers! Also, when I was at the taping long back, Stephen said that when he does the Esteban character, he has someone standing off camera saying those lines, which he then repeats. (And then of course he did the dance! And called all the ladies in the audience ‘Chicas”…)But he doesn’t read from the prompter, which makes it so flawless and funny…

That’s interesting. I would think it would be easier to just read it off a prompter, since Spanish is as phonetic a language as you can get.

True, but then the pronunciation wouldn’t be so clear and authentic…

Did anyone catch during the Persian Gulf segment, when Stephen was talking about Qwutter, the Arabic Twitter, if you looked at all the ‘death to america’ variations, one of them says “OMA America is the worst ;)” as in ‘oh my allah’. hahaha, i love those writers. You really can’t watch TDS/TCR without a pause button.

HAHAH! I totally missed it! Thanks for catching that! I love it when someone catches a joke that I miss and shares it – I get to laugh at the show all over again.

I adored the Ira Glass interview as much as all other aspects of the show tonight. I don’t know if anyone else thought this but, it seemed to me that a majority of the interview was done out of character. You could tell that Stephen really enjoyed talking with Ira since there was a huge smile on his face throughout the interview. They genuinely make each other laugh/have a nice rapport and that is nice to see–A real appreciation for each other!

I noticed that! It was a little like they were just two friends having a few beers together in a bar rather than sitting in a studio in front of an audience. It was fun to watch it!

I enjoyed the part when Stephen reassured Ira that he has trim and cut rather than old and short. Ira seemed worried that Stephen was flirting with him. Haha! It reminded me of the time that Stephen told Steve Carell that he looked buff and cut during the Get Smart interview and Steve Carell shouted “Stop that!”

Gah! I need the edit feature to return. I’m finding grammatical errors in everything I say.

I voted for the Esteban Colberto segment because I couldn’t resist his Latin lover alter-ego. How about that tie?! Woo! When he fell at the end of the segment, that wasn’t planned, right? I love it when they throw in mishaps right before they break for commercials.

Since I’m rather ignorant regarding some of the countries in the Middle East, I’m really enjoying the “Where in the World and When in Time is Stephen Colbert Going to Be in the Persian Gulf?” segment. I realize it’s not the most comprehensive coverage of each country, but it’s something!

Stephen Colbert is really good at pitching the products placed on his show, but I never got as big a desire to purchase one as I got for the F-88 Overcompensator. Does anybody knows when it comes on sale, because Googling for a sales page didn’t get me anything this morning?

Stephen’s laughter after the Rachel Maddow comment was hysterical. And hola, Esteban!

Ira Glass meeting Stephen Colbert was the pinnacle of my two greatest fandoms, the melding of my deep, deep appreciation for dark-haired, bespectacled, nerdy, slightly femme men [and mensches].

5054–never forget!

Didn’t he also want Yoko to split up the Dixie Chicks? I think I read that in the Glamour article he penned back in 2007. :)

First time to see Esteban Colberto in action. He’s so gaudy that I love him! :)

It was so hard to pick which segment I liked best! I ended up choosing Esteban, but I loved the Ira Glass interview, and the Where in the Persian Gulf part as well.

What an overall great show. And fun info about how he does his Esteban character! Thanks!
