Episode 5053 (4/21/2009)

epguideiconEPISODE NUMBER: 5053 (April 21, 2009)
GUEST: Coach Mike Kryzewski
SEGMENTS: The WØRD – Stressed Position, Who’s Riding My Coattails Now?
VIDEOS: Tuesday, April 21, 2009

I love it when the audience is just alive like it’s been the past couple of nights. I’m absolutely astounded at the Demon Denim story – I had no idea I was wearing Satan’s Leg Tubes.

It’s always a good show when Stephen sings, but it goes up to eleven when Stephen sings in a flag sweater in front of a green screen with hanging meat projected behind him. God bless the USA! It was really funny to hear Stephen admit to getting his backside handed to him by the ‘Daily Show’ softball team. I’d absolutely love to watch that game.

I know we had some Zoners in the audience – anything fun happen behind the scenes tonight? And how lovely was that tie?!

  • Anderson Cooper says he’s going to show us 360 degrees, but he doesn’t have the guts to do his show on a Lazy Susan. I’m sure the back of him’s very pretty.
  • Perhaps the type of deep psychic disorder that makes one blame the decline of a great nation on a style of pant.
  • HAHAH Satan’s Leg Tubes
  • What George Will is trying to say is that my flat conservative butt does not look good in Wranglers.
  • Good God, a WKRP in Cincinnati reference!!
  • Collect the whole set, and you get this free coffee mug [Mondays Are Torture]. Aw, it’s a little kitty … being tortured.
  • Ensure plus – one sip and you’ll say pretty much anything. Technically, not torture.
  • In your face, Zimbabwe!
  • That is piping hot, I’m going to put this on the chest of someone strapped to a board.
  • ["When A Problem Comes Along, You Must Whip It"]
  • It’s like shoulder pads … maybe they’re coming back.
  • He Who Felt It, Dealt It
  • The music is quite stirring, if you’re a 75-year old from Utah.
  • That’s right world, we don’t need 3 tenors.
  • Blown Away by the USA
  • Stunned by the States
  • Flabbergasted by the Flag
  • I think in this economic time of hardship for everyone, the idea that you are hoarding consonants is unconscionable.
  • What is the difference between teamwork and socialism?
  • Can you give me some pointers on how to get my softball team together so we can just once beat the ‘Daily Show’ softball team?
  • Are you accusing me of a breeding experiment?

I saw Rachel Maddow discussing that George Will article about blue jeans last night, and I was immediately reminded of Herb Tarlek’s war between the “suits and the dungarees.” I was very pleased to see the reference tonight on TCR.

I wanna play for the TCR softball team!

If you noticed the rolling finger motion near the beginning of the Orrin Hatch segment right after the little graphic galloped out.. well he was saying go on to the next cue card… he wasn’t going to say it “again” This was do to a re-do from the top of the segment.. that’s why there was the emphasis on the “again”. He said “this time let’s go with what’s on the prompter” :) and he said basically that all that extra time spent rehearsing.. (very long).. obviously wasn’t enough..

aww I would have waited another hour if necessary. :)

Let’s see.. best question was whether Beck had ever responded to his ~attacks on him…. Stephen told the story where Beck did give a shout out to him (and he quoted Beck verbatim where, regarding the Tea Party protests and the Alamo, he mentioned Colbert).. but he said of course he wasn’t watching Beck… he was listening. … he was actually on the toilet.

LOL!!!!!!!

LOL! I was thinking about you while I was watching last night and wondering if you were having fun. Sounds like you had a great time! :-)

It was a tough call for me between the Word and the singing in the flag sweater. I’m not sure I can pick between the two. And then throw in the Demon Denim with the WKRP reference and it makes it nearly impossible. LOL! I also enjoyed the interview, even though it lacked chemistry. I admire Coach K but he’s not a terribly animated person, which is odd for a college basketball coach.

Coach K has 3 daughters. He’s outnumbered at home. ;D

LOL! That’s right! I forgot he has three daughters. He’s co-written two books with his daughter Jamie.

:( I have several grammatical errors and typos, above. I blame the chocolate and alcohol thingy at Max Brennans that I had after the show before coming back to the hotel room to watch the show “again”.

The TDS/TCR softball game should at least show up on the Moment of Zen…the whole idea is too much. I’d love to see it also.

I loved the George Will to English dictionary, seeing Stephen pull it out from (where else) under his desk. Stephen didn’t even have to exaggerate that bit.

Stephen with Coach K was fun, and it was nice to hear that his daughter belongs to the Nation.

They have seriously got to film one of these games and show us AT LEAST the highlights. I’m chomping at the bit to see Stephen playing baseball (and getting whupped!).

I almost voted for “Who’s Riding My Coattails,” but Demon Denim won out. Ironically, my decision also involved pants… :D

I always surrender to any time Stephen sings…no matter how cheesy it gets…so I voted for “Who’s Riding My Coattails Now?” When WILL Stephen come out with a new album? It’s been four months;)

I really loved The Word as it really brought attention to a timely issue. Very insightful and powerful.

Did anyone notice an usual swell of applause as Stephen finished the George Will segment? Do you think he had to redo it a few times and the audience was cheering him for getting through it?

I’m not sure everyone caught it, but at the very end of the interview Coach Mike Kryzewski mentioned that his daughter is part of the Colbert Nation. Yay!

A well-written Word will almost always win my vote (as it did here). Though, the singing was lots fun, and how can you not love a well-placed WKRP reference? Once again, the show has such a mix of “serious” satire (if that is the right term) and fun, silly stuff. The interview was fun too – loved the softball team story.

Wasn’t Orrin Hatch one of the people who “roasted” Stephen at the event in DC a few months back?

That is a BRILLIANT idea, in every sense of the word. This needs to happen. Even my reCaptcha is saying DO IT. (Not really, but you know.)

Oh my gosh! Is that you and Stephen in that pic?! How adorable! Was this after a taping? Do tell:)Forgive me if you already posted a taping report at an earlier date.

Hehe yes, yes it is. I’ve yet to write a taping report about it, but let me just say for now – it was brief but glorious. GLORIOUS.

I promise to write a taping report as soon as the finals are over! I still have to post my other taping report from last September (which I wrote as an assignment for my English class haha), too. Procrasti-nation of The Nation duties. So bad, I know.

Meanwhile – getting a shot with Stephen is a surprisingly simple task, actually (provided that you can get to a taping, that is). You just have to stick around for 20, maybe 25 minutes afterward. Are you planning on making the pilgrimage anytime soon? (I want to say let me know if you do because I live in NYC and I’d love to meet you, but I just can’t find a way to say it without it sounding potentially super-creepy..)

Ahhh, so many parentheses in the space of three paragraphs and no edit function! The grammar nerd in me is freaking out.

This, of course, is an addendum just in case I didn’t sound like enough of a weirdo in that last reply.

Aww. Thanks erriacoes. Well, I went to a taping report last September with my sister, but I wasn’t sure how long I would have to wait. It’s great that you only had to wait for 20-25 minutes, but I’m wondering if it might vary from night to night.

I would love to attend a taping soon again, but I’m afraid I can’t go right now since my job situation is rather rocky and thus I can’t splurge…even for Stephen:)

However, I’d love to meet up with you next time I go! Can I take a rain check?

P.S. Don’t worry. You didn’t sound creepy:)

Robyn + The Bangles + Whip It = Great end to my Wednesday evening. :)

First time I saw the “Who’s Riding My Coattails Now?”. Cute graphic! Hooray for a singing Stephen! :)

Slightly off-topic, but I wonder if Jon will now put “Chief” in front of his name in the credits, just like Sir Dr. Stephen T. Colbert, D.F.A. :)

Stephen was exceptionally well-dressed tonight! Chef’s Hat! Patriotic Sweater! Add in the singing and references to WKRP, Alf, and The Brady Bunch!?! The writers are working overtime! Loved it!

Stephen singing always wins in my book and OMG, those hideous sweaters! But the WORD was great and needed. You can always count on Colbert to poke holes in a flawed moral argument by double talking politicians. Can’t say that I like baby blue ties on him though, the color makes him look washed out.

Stephen was wearing a “Carolina blue” tie, the color of Duke’s rival the North Carolina Tar Heels of Chapel Hill (alma mater of Michael Jordan). Coach K certainly would have noticed it.

My first thought on Stephen’s dress/appearance at the top of the show was, “Put a bow tie on him and Stephen looks right out of the 1920s.”

Didn’t know that about the color, so thanks for the backstory. He’s quite detailed minded isn’t he?

Great show. Gotta love it when a well written W0rd makes an appearance. I was surprised that Coach K is against the current NBA ban on high school players going pro – it’s good for college basketball.

THat comment about the ban really surprised me too. I love how Stephen took it even further and started discussing recruiting babies.

The ban doesn’t really make any sense – there’s no evidence that high school players gain any basketball skills or maturity for having to work without pay for a college team for a year. But I was surprised that Coach K would be willing to admit it. Kudos for him.

Also it actually makes sense to not limit the age to high school graduates either. AFAIK, in European soccer they allow under 18 players to join the league, and it seems to work out for them. In this sense Europeans are more capitalistic than Americans.

I thought the Who’s Riding My Coattails segment containing the Bangles’”Walk Like an Egyptian” reference was a clever allusion to the “Walk Like a Tarkanian” parody during Jerry Tarkanian’s years at University of Nevada Las Vegas.

Jerry Tarkanian and Mike Kryzewski wuld seem to share little except basketball coaching success at the very highest level, so it was a surprise that a lifetime college coach advocates an NBA recruiting age of 18.

I haven’t read Coach K’s reasoning, but one would certainly be economic opportunities for “kids” that turn pro. To require a young basketball star to attend college is to “force” him to play for free with all its inherent risks for injury. If an NBA team would wish to sign an 18-year-old, the immediate economic difference it can make in his and his family’s life is substantial. Why deny him that earning opportunity?

The next thing you know is that George Will is goiung to start quoting ALF in his columns also “The only good cat is a stir fried cat” at least that will gain support among the folks at the Peking Moon restaraunt where “the cat is in the kettle”

I don’t think any one segment as a whole stood out last night. Even the Word felt a little unfocused. The highlights came from individual lines from each segment. My personal favorite for the night was the “Mondays are Torture” cat torture cup.

those were fantastic songs! The Bangles, lol!

that march down the court, my basketball team (very casual) thought it would be a good idea to be a kind of human wall. and that was Monday so our coattails got ridden.
