NOM thinks Stephen Colbert’s parody *supports* them

By Ms Interpreted on April 18th, 2009 ·

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA! Oh my, I just don’t know how much funnier/sadder this can get. From Jason Linkins over at the Huffington Post (h/t Argon):

Anti-Gay Group Sends Letter To Colbert Thanking Him For Mocking Them
04/17/09 08:49 PM

. . .

“I’ve always thought Stephen Colbert was a double-agent, pretending to pretend to be a conservative, to pull one over Hollywood. Now I’m sure,” said Maggie Gallagher, President of the National Organization for Marriage (NOM).

“Thank you Stephen for playing our ad in full on national television–for free. HRC eat your heart out. Plus we all had a great chuckle, too!” said Brian Brown, NOM’s Executive Director. “Where can I make a donation to the National Organization for Colbert?”

Yes. NOM appears to believe that pretending to not understand the central satiric conceit of the show constitutes a witty comeback. They are also under the impression that their opponents at the Human Rights Campaign were saddened, watching Stephen Colbert rip NOM a new one. This is deeply weird! But I think what’s going on here is that NOM has embraced a tired bit of election year conventional wisdom: the belief that getting your commercial played, in any venue, even if its subjected to ruthless mocking, constitutes “winning the media cycle,” or something.

It doesn’t! But don’t tell them that! It’s high time that organizations like NOM started showing the people who point out their rampaging idiocy a little gratitude!

Really? You watched this segment and thought that supporters of gay marriage were the target??

Oh dear. I don’t know how to break it to you (or even whether I want to at this point), NOM, but Stephen’s actually very much in favor with and beloved by “teh gays”. Witness the lurid, drug-filled techno dance party he started at the GLAAD Awards in 2007:

[Editor's note: It's been far too long since I've had the excuse to post that GLAAD clip.]

“Thank you Stephen for playing our ad in full on national television–for free.”

…in front of more than a million people who think you’re idiots. You’re welcome, NOM!

Thanks for posting the GLAAD clip again, Ms. I, it’s been a while since I’ve seen it. The mini-rave at the end gets me every time.

WOW and I thought the teabagging parties were proof enough of the cognitive dissonance and blatant shameless displays of willful ignorance of intolerant people. This takes the cake.

After that GLAAD video, I’m feeling GAY GAY GAY GAY GAY!

*facepalm* I mean… first they take the acronym “NOM,” not understanding that the word already has a much-beloved definition on the internets. Then they co-opt “2M4M” apparently not having any idea what that means either. And then… “Thanks for showing our ad, in order to make fun of it”? Really? I hate to say it, but it doesn’t seem like NOM has savvy on their side.

I’m reminded for some reason of this little exchange when Amy Sedaris was the guest on TCR:

Stephen: All my gay friends love you.
Amy: You have gay friends?
Stephen: Well… know your enemy.

If this is their way of being sarcastic, they need better writers to convey exactly that. I think they only succeeded in making themselves look even more ignorant (to put it mildly) than they already are.

Now if they’re operating on the assumption that no publicity is bad publicity, the NOM ad wasn’t played because TCR or Stephen himself supports it. It was played in order for the viewers to have a context to prepare them for the Colbert Coalition ad.

I actually think that the NOM ad was pretty campy already, especially more now with the recent exposure of the fact that these people (who seem to find “pretending to be a straight person hurt by gay marriage apparently very very challenging,” as Rachel Maddow pointed out) were hired actors (who could barely pronounce or read the words in the script) set against a melodramatic background of thunder and lightning. But the brilliant writers at TCR was still able to take their ridiculousness to another level. Bravo.

This is so very, very sad. Lol. I thought the whole teabagging thing was bad, and then the “2M4M” thing came along, and now this? How stupid are these people? Someone should really buy them an urban dictionary or something. Plus, it’s just really pitiful that they thought Stephen showing their ad helped them. He was showing it to an audience who already, most likely, thinks they’re idiots and then adding his satirical spin to it! I don’t know if they’re being sarcastic or sincere – either way it’s sad.

And that ad of theirs? Really, really pitiful. Rachel Maddow showed the footage that surfaced of those actors auditioning for the part – haha. I still don’t understand how allowing people who love each other to get married signifies the coming of a “storm” or “threatens” the “sanctity” of straight marriages. It’s all a bunch of BS.

Oh! Also – thanks for posting that GLAAD clip! I’d never seen that! =D

This is kind of like when Tom DeLay thought Stephen was on his side, and posted a TCR clip on his Web site.

The Right really is irony challenged, not to mention missing a humor gene. This segment was absolutely great. It’s now even funnier knowing that NOM thinks Stephen is with them on this issue. HA!

I loved Peter Grosz going after the guy at the end, “We should get you out of these wet clothes”. Bwah.

Should someone write a book, “Irony and Satire for Dummies”?

Paired with Stephen’s expression and covering PeePop’s eyes–classic!

Seriously. I laughed until I cried. That’s the first time that’s ever happened to me.

Oh No!!! The homo storm got me. *faints*

I had to pause the video at this point. I could not breathe.

Awesome! I know we’ll enjoy Colbert’s fun with his letter from the National Organization for Morons.

The GLAAD clip is very funny. I especially liked the dancing at the end.

Although NOM’s letter amuses me, I find that whole organization pathetic. They’ve made it way to easy to mock them. The “Gathering Storm” ad is so bad, it could be a parody of an anti-gay marriage commercial. The first time I saw it, I wondered if it was real or not. And, IMHO if you’re going to use actors, you should pick people who can actually act.

Not only did NOM decide to pick-up the acronym “2M4M” without realizing what it meant, but they also didn’t think to snag the domain name http://www.2m4m.org before someone else took it and set-up an anti- NOM, pro-gay marriage web site. I was surprised they didn’t take the domain name before they advertised their new acronym.

Who knows? They may know exactly what they are doing and it’s all part of some elaborate plan that I’m not getting…

I don’t know whether to cuss or laugh at this. Perhaps both will suffice.

This is positively hilarious. Keep laughing, NOM…you’ve got a whole new audience rooting against you, and you’re even more clueless than you were before.

“There’s a storm coming…a GIANT…GAY…STORM….”

Yeah…that’s some serious support. *eyeroll*

Not everyone on the right is irony challenged or lacking a sense of humor, but for some reason the “clueless doofuses” do seem to gravitate towards each other.

I’m always tickled when conservatives fangirl/boy Stephen, completely oblivious to the fact that he is making fun of them. :D

I dont think they really think that the ad is supporting them. They’re fully aware that they’re being mocked. The true ridiculous notion that they’re subscribing to is the fact that if their ad is being replayed for free on the media, no matter what the context, that constitutes a success for them.

It’s that sort of political campaign conventional wisdom, cynically based on some psychological research, that really gets on my nerves. The theory goes that after a while, people will only remember the ad and not the contextual criticism of it. It only takes a couple logical steps to refute that notion in this case. You’re showing the ad to an audience that’s inherently skeptical of theoconservative ideas. And the immediate parody of the ad is much more memorable than the ad itself. What makes NOM think that they’re changing any minds?

well, if ur in NOMs shoes, might as well make lemonaide with lemons. if they can use it to make people watch the original AD then, its good.
