Stephen Colbert in the Zeitgeist – April 11, 2009

zeitgeist2Happy weekend, Zoners! Time for another stroll around the Colbertoverse. Here’s your zeitgeist for April 11th.

OMG! SPACE!!

  • Colbert and Congresswoman Giffords spar over space station

The sparring between Stephen and Arizona Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (aka “Miss Pink Sweater Set”), as well as the Node 3 naming contest, gets covered nicely in this video from azfamily.com. I can’t embed it here, but go have a look and watch Rep. Giffords have her say. (Mentioned in this video, but not on TCR, is the fact that Giffords is married to an astronaut.)

  • NASA to Reveal Space Module’s Name on ‘Colbert Report’ – SPACE.com

Some additional information about the impending announcement of the official name of Node 3, to be revealed on Tuesday night’s episode. Quote from NASA’s spokesperson John Yembrick: “The program is having us on knowing that we have chosen a name, but they do not know the name of the node.” So apparently this will be a surprise to Stephen as well as the rest of us. Hoo boy…

Better Know a Congressperson

There was some coverage of Rep. Dan Maffei’s BKAD segment, which was generally considered a hit.

  • ‘Evil Congressman Maffei’ appears on ‘The Colbert Report’ – The Post-Standard, Syracuse.com

Congressman Maffei says his feedback has all been positive. See, congresspeople, it doesn’t hurt. (Much…)

  • Rep. Dan Maffei on Colbert: Prostitutes, Cocaine, NAMBLA, Oh My! – Huffington Post

Another positive review for the appearance, saying that Maffei “came across as genial and game” and that his “good humor served him well.” I agree, he was a good sport. The BKAD segments are so much better when the interview subject rolls with Stephen and abandons any attempt to stay dignified.

  • Rep. Dan Maffei appears on Stephen Colbert show – WSYR-TV in Syracuse

This article has a poll asking for reactions to Maffei’s appearance on TCR. The choices are “Hilarious! Glad he had a sense of humor,” “Bad political move,” and “Whatever.” “Hilarious” is winning by a wide margin, while “Whatever” is a distant second.

Remember Rep. Bill Posey of Florida, and those rumors about his grandma and an alligator?

  • New Rep. Bill Posey gains his footing after a rough start – Orlando Sentinal (emphasis added):

“Instead, the bill fell flat — it has yet to attract a co-sponsor — and Posey took a beating from late-night comedy-show hosts and liberal media, who accused him of kowtowing to extremists in his party.

“‘I expected there would be some civil debate about it, but it wasn’t civil,’ Posey said. ‘Just a bunch of name-calling and personal denigration. … There is no reason to say that I’m the illegitimate grandson of an alligator.‘” [Hahahahaha!!--Ed.]

Not sure where this comment goes, but I think here is as good as anywhere else — Neil DeGrasse Tyson just posted a bunch of twitter updates after being at conferences for a few weeks, and he states “cage match will be scheduled”! lol! :) it-getter! (but we knew that already, obviously)

    • I was in the audience when that got mentioned (3/30). Stephen was asked which guest was his favorite (he said he couldn’t pick one) and mentioned that he had an astronomer (whose name escapes me!) on that night. Stephen then randomly suggested a cage match between them and wondered how to organize that (or something along that line), much to our amusement.

      And there you go :D

I checked out the St. Pauli Girl site, and they didn’t ask me for my ID. :-) That’s a nice thing they’re doing. Everyone should go click. I’ve tweeted it, and posted it to my blog, too.

They probably didn’t ask for your birthdate because I posted the direct link to the poster instead of the link for the home page. Go me. :-)

I didn’t see your tweet… is Twitter eating more tweets again?

i clicked thru to one of the congressman maffei articles. its strange that alot of people there are commenting that they didn’t like his appearance. bad timing with the recession, that instead of going to comedy shows, congresmen should work and all… while we should work hard to solve this thing, now is the time when we shouldn’t forget to laugh also…

I agree with you! I also think it is very important for candidates and elected officials to show how mult-faceted they can be! I would much rather elect someone with a sense of humor and humility–I think they would be much more productive overall.
