Episode 5044 (4/2/2009)

epguideiconEPISODE NUMBER: 5044 (April 2, 2009)
GUEST: Biz Stone
SEGMENTS: Cold War, Merriam Webster updates dictionary
VIDEOS: Thursday, April 2, 2009

I was hoping that the Twitter founder interview would be a fun one, and it was, but not in the way I was expecting. I decided that I would just post a screenshot of the fun over at @stephenathome instead of writing up comments. I hope you all were following! You also might want to check out Biz Stone’s Twitter feed – he’s got a pic of Stephen backstage.

So, fellow Twitterers, what’s your handle? (Mine’s @dbferguson.) And were you having fun with Stephen Colbert’s livetweeting his interview?

  • And hard to believe he had the time, what, with all the secret lawless torture.
  • The only thing that man [Biden] can plug is his hair.
  • You may not be able to tell, but this watch is also a gun.
  • I want the old progress, where they go bankrupt, and we watch new episodes of Cheers. I think Sam is going to kiss Diane. I think it’s going to happen this year.
  • Supra? That makes me so angra.
  • We must remain ever vigilant against this tiny, impoverished nation or it will overrun America in a ’55 Nash Rambler.
  • We’re also caving into North Korea, and its insane dictator, Rachel Maddow’s grandmother.
  • Did you hear that? Rest easy, Hawaii, you’re on Washington’s list of places we might consider saving. If you’re not sure how that works, ask New Orleans.
  • Space Reagan!
  • Ooh, I didn’t see that one coming back in M.
  • I’m beginning to suspect that Merriam and Webster were conjugating more than irregular verbs.
  • He’s strong, he’s absorbent. Take it down, Jimmy, take it down! Bring it back for a second. Take it down!
  • engayify: v. to gay it up.
  • truthiness – a word so straight that it drives men wild

I had no idea that stephen had a twitter account. Wow, it’s really him…so exhilirating! Did NFZ know about this, or did this just get found out tonight? Because he has been twatting for like 6 months.
I like his tweet, “Cadmium Yellow is the color of broken dreams.”:)
    This is so exciting!

Stephen just got so many new followers. It’s fun to watch the number grow each time I refresh the page. Haha. Currently 4,713.

I seriously missed all of this, I can see DB’s previous posts about it though. If he starts tweeting on a regular basis, it’s going to be such a blast. I know DB you mentioned before that Twitter hits you like-bam! and you’re kind of hooked. So let’s hope he gets hooked, so he can interact with his crazy fandom!

  5. eirracoes says:

It’s so awesome to know that it’s really him Twittering! The past Tweets were just lines from old episodes (I think, correct if I’m wrong), and that sort of took away the fun of it all to be honest.

I so wish he would keep up with this actually-Twittering-himself deal from now on – fingers crossed!

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

    • DB says:

We don’t know if it was definitively him – it could have been one of the writers. But it was very fun nonetheless. :)

My favorite part of that whole interview: “Is that what crashed that plane?!”

  7. forsakinghalfloves says:

@StephenAtHome now has 4, 809 followers! :) I’m excited to watch this episode tonight, even though the live tweets won’t be live anymore when I tune in. :)

  8. Jenny with a Y says:

If anyone wants to follow me, I’m “@JennywithaY” over on Twitter.

Tonight has been so much fun! I was completely in my element during the interview. I was following Summize (Twitter search engine) for mentions of Stephen and “@StephenAtHome,” watching tweets come in from “@StephenAtHome” & the other people I follow (most of whom were watching TCR), and watching the show. I can’t wait to see how many followers “@StephenAtHome” picks up tonight!

I loved the segment about the dictionary! It was hilarious. Only “Stephen” could get so angry at a dictionary. :-)

I’m @ms_treesap- Colbert fans are always good people to know :)

I really need to catch up on this week’s episodes- I didn’t realise I’d missed them all until just now. Ooops.

  11. ddags says:

wish i could have watched the episode and the twitterverse in real time.
still, i really enjoyed reading all those tweets late.
    follow me @ddags

where is the picture he make?

  13. Di says:

    I’m @di_br on Twitter. :)

Just a question, though… I haven’t seen the episode, but if Stephen was livetwitting the interview, shouldn’t the tweets have come up earlier, when they were taping the episode?

    • Jenny with a Y says:

I had the same thoughts last night and I noticed that all the tweets that posted during the show came from the web rather than an iPhone. There was one that posted a few hours before the show aired and then quickly disappeared. It was interesting to see it reappear during the interview.

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

      • Loll says:

I just love the level of detail on this show. That they went to the effort to do this, and time it to the first broadcast. Just for us :-)

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

        • Jenny with a Y says:

I agree. One of the things I appreciate about TCR is the thought and effort that is put into every detail of the show. Can you imagine what a pain it must have been to time those tweets last night? I love that they did that to make the experience even more fun for the fans.

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

      • Ann G. says:

Oh yeah, that explains the disappearing “tweet” you saw yesterday. Trial run for last night’s show!

I haven’t seen it yet, but can’t wait. Sounds like it was fun!

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

  14. MaryLovesColbert says:

Wow! So, this is definite confirmation that it’s actually him Tweeting on there! Yes! I was really hoping it wasn’t just some hoax, this is awesome. I love his updates, they’re always very interesting non sequiters. Lol.

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

  15. Gaia Faye says:

Interesting that Stone mentioned Google developing its business model last night, since I see on Google News this morning the rumor that Google’s looking to buy Twitter.

I’ve enjoyed reading some Twitter accounts, but I can’t say I really get it. It’s just like a really tiny blog, isn’t it?

  16. Cole says:

That was a great interview, and I liked the obscure but awesome segments. Cold War Update!

  17. I just finished watching TDS and TCR two hours ago. Great shows tonight! John Oliver and Wyatt Cenac were absolutely brilliant! :)

I loved the Merriam-Webster segment. Hooray for redefinition! I’ve always been fascinated how words can take on very different meanings when placed in different contexts. :) And watching Stephen tweet as he interviewed the original Twitterer was both funny and kind of surreal. Do you guys think he’ll upload the iPhone picture of Biz Stone?

  18. Mel says:

I’m @Silvarius over on Twitter. I personally love it (Twitter, I mean) cause I love writing blogs, but I never have the patience or the attention span to do it very often. But that’s just me.

I missed most of the beginning of the episode because my phone wouldn’t stop ringing, but I did enjoy the Merriam-Webster part and actually found the interview interesting, too. Stephen definately needs to post that pic he took of Biz on his iPhone.

  19. Michele says:

It was hard to pick a favorite segment from last night. I enjoyed the Merriam-Webster bit but the interview was so fun. I can’t help but love the hipster geeks! :-) I’m thinking it was either a writer or someone involved in the whole “Nation’s Home” thing making the tweets, but who really knows for sure? Nice to see StephenAtHome has gained so many new followers. I don’t have a Twitter account but I may just have to wander over and check it out.

  20. Lisa says:

It was nice to hear “truthiness” dropped on the show again — is it me or has it been forever since it was mentioned? I had to vote for the Biz Stone interview mostly because it was really interesting to see how Twitter came about. While I’m tempted to open my own Twitter account, I’m afraid of getting even more sucked in to the Internet than I already am, as I’m actually trying to put a smidgen of distance between us. But, one never knows…

  21. nerdygirl says:

@stennieville on Twitter here… Hoping to add y’all to my follow list today when I come up for air. Busy day at work!

I haven’t actually had a chance to sit down and watch the episode start to finish yet (I had it on in the background as I was doing something else and just watching with one eye… will revisit tonight), but I sure noticed my Twitter account blowing up once the interview started! Great fun, and great to see the @StephenAtHome so prolific for a change!

  22. mrtigger001 says:

I thought Biz Stone and Stephen had a really good back and forth. That was in the neighborhood of the interview Stephen had with Jimmy Wales, one of the first interviews I watched on TCR and one of my favorites.

“Supra?? That makes me so angra!” – That helped Cold War Update get my vote. Although I might reconsider switching to Biz Stone.

    • DJ Jazzy Flax says:

lol, I was going to mention the “supra/angra,” but you beat me to it :)

Kinda bummed the Biz Stone interview wasn’t what I expected; it wasn’t as fun, I guess. But I did enjoy Stephen live tweeting.

      • ColbertGirl27 says:

I thought Biz Stone was very low-key and didn’t give enough fuel for Stephen’s character. He didn’t seem to enjoy being there which bothered me, but based on his tweets, it sounds like he loves Stephen. I guess he’s just very mellow.
