Please, Dreamworks, give us the ‘Monsters vs. Aliens’ ad libs!

Newsarama has posted an interview with Monsters vs. Aliens‘ Conrad Vernon, and he mentions some ad lib sessions that I really hope he succeeds in getting onto the DVD release. Hee!

Vernon also found that everyone he worked with, from crew to cast, had something to contribute.

“Rob Letterman and I came up with the story, then our main writers were the first ones on,” he said. “They would write pages and then the storyboard artists would tweak them. Then Rob and I would sit down and tweak the storyboards a little bit more. Then we sent it back to the writers to tighten it. It was so loose that I think we can only now type out a final script.

From there, the actors added their own personal touches, many of which were kept.

“We also found that everyone of them could ad lib like crazy,” said Vernon. “For instance, Steve Colbert would come in, read the line straight. Then he would say ‘wait a minute’ and sit there in the booth for a minute. Then he would giggle and ad lib. To top it, he would keep it on point. The whole thing where he was being carried into the helicopter shouting, ‘I’m brave! I’m a brave president!’ is a total ad lib. We are actually trying to get Dreamworks to put in all the ad libs Colbert, Rain Wilson and Will Arnett and Seth Rogen did in their sessions for the DVD. Many of it we couldn’t use in the movie, but it was incredibly funny.

Okay, giggling and ad libbing in the voiceover sessions? You better believe I’d like to see those! Are you listening, Dreamworks? Pretty please, can we see that?

I’m a huge fan of ad libs, outtakes and bloopers, so I say bring it on.

Kinda reminds me of Aladdin. Robin Williams did an INCREDIBLE amount of ad-libbing as the Genie and not all of it made it to the movie and only some of those were revealed in the behind-the-scenes.

  8. TruthPower says:

Yes I love watching ad libs and outtakes. And he really makes me laugh. I’d like to hear all the lines that he came up with. I’m sure they’re twice as funny!

    3 DAYS!!!

  9. Lisa says:

I hope they won’t be chintzy with the special features when the DVD is initially released — I’ve been noticing over the past few years that the special features have been cut waaaay down when the DVD is first released, and then a few months later, they’ll release a “collector’s edition” which has lots more, leaving folks to either go out and repurchase the DVD just for the special features, or waiting until the collector’s edition is released. I’m *very* big on special features, which is probably why this is a particular gripe of mine.

On a side note…Stephen Colbert ad libbing? Never! : P

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0
