Hello, Zoners! To do a quick test chat with other Zoners, I’ve set up a Chatzy room, and I’ll keep it open tonight for a few hours. Come and join us! The password is “sweetness”.
Come chat in the No Fact Zone chat room!
EDIT:
Well, the chat room is now closed, and we had over 50 people join us over the course of about 4 hours or so. We chatted about all kinds of things – about Sailor Moon, our other fandoms, Stephen on the ‘Today Show’, the seriously random hives on my hands, and just a ton of other Stephen and non-Stephen topics.
I’m not super happy with the chat software that we used, so I’ll keep looking. Specifically, I’m looking for a few specific capabilities. I want the program to be embeddable, have language filters, have control to check and ban IPs, and the ability to turn the room on and off. If any of you Zoners are familiar with anything that might work, please e-mail me or put something in the comments.
And thanks to all who joined us – it was lots of fun to just talk and get to know each other better!
Hey DB,
It asks for a password. Are we supposed to know what it is?

Duh! Sorry DB. I was so excited by the headline that I forgot to read the rest of the post:)

Erg, the chat site is “access denied” here at work, boo.

That was awesome. Great idea. I look forward to getting in there to chat again sometime soon. :)

in reference to your ‘tweet’. personaly, i miss 1998. :) and the chat room idea got me quite excited (even if i did get there 77 seconds before it closed). it would be nice to just shoot the breeze about things colbert and anything at all with the great community here. i know sometimes i have questions or comments about things that don’t necissarily pertain to the post topic. it’d be great to a have a place for them to somewhat belong. i vote yes.

at times it wasn’t so much shooting the breeze as it was being shot through the air wearing a jetpack– things were moving FAST!
very nice to see such a turnout, and so many interesting people! :)

We got to do this again! I can’t believe I missed it!

D’aw. I missed it. :(
Maybe you could take a look at Stickam? Although we used it at the Colboard I never looked that much into it, so I can’t say how many of the features you want it does or doesn’t have.

Great idea, DB. Looks like I missed all the fun, though. Stupid RL!

I left pretty early last night, but I do remember that the last time we had a NFZ on Chatzy, there was (at least for me) a pretty significant lag time. It seemed to get bogged down when the conversation started flowing fast – long times where it would hang, or I’d be unable to type, and then long delays between sending the comment & it showing up. So I’d second the search for another chat client.
Any thoughts about using IRC or an XMPP client like Jabber/Pidgin? (XMPP is the underlying protocol for Google Talk). On the positive side, those are really robust and scale well to large rapid conversations. The negative for IRC is that it’s a bit less user friendly for the uninitiated, and for Jabber it’s that you need to create an account (though it’s a totally open protocol, unlike AIM).
At any rate, I’m happy about the NFZ chats – I had a blast last time!

I wasn’t a fan of chatzy because you had to manually refresh all the time (was I missing some auto-refresh button?). Might I suggest meebo? Meebo has the ability to create and even embed chatrooms. The only drawback is that you have to create an account, unlike chatzy which allows you to do a guest nickname sorta thing for quick access. But I’ve used meebo since they were a small startup and they’re pretty neat. You guys should look into it to see if it fits your needs.

UGH…I hate that I missed this. When will another one be held?

That was really fun. :) I love talking to all you people. It’s not often I get to talk about Stephen with actual it-getters.
ReCaptcha: “AUTOS low.” And how!!!

that was a really fun chat session :-)
i don’t know any better chat software to use, i haven’t been in a chat room in years until last night. but i really liked it and it’d be awesome to have something like that become a part of the site. so we can chat during shows or something and all do the “OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!! Stephen looks so cute dressed in is pj’s!!!!!” kind of thing at the same time
