Episode 5033 (3/9/2009)

By DB on March 9th, 2009 ·

epguideiconEPISODE NUMBER: 5033 (March 9, 2009)
GUESTS: Congresswoman Cynthia Lummis, Lisa Hannigan
SEGMENTS: The WØRD, Better Know A District
VIDEOS: Monday, March 9, 2009

Okay, seriously, is Stephen Colbert *trying* to turn us stupid with fangirl glee tonight?

I love it when Stephen combines silly and sexy, and tonight’s intro definitely combined the two. And Stephen continued his catering to the female aspect of his audience with the mental image of Stephen’s lather. Whoa. We have GOT to get a link to that shower cam on our blog. The WØRD was fantastic – I always love a visit from Sweetness. And, of course, I also love Tom Purcell getting shot.

So Stephen’s wardrobe was all over the place tonight. Good God, not a Bolo! I’ve thought those things were hideous, well, pretty much my entire life. Having to wear one during jazz band was more humiliating than those stupid marching band costumes. Colbert again teased the fangirls, along with Congresswoman Cynthia Lummis, with his numerous Cougar innuendos. The guest, folk singer Lisa Hannigan, was so sweet and shy during the interview, and her voice was haunting and beautiful. I think I’ll see if that song is on iTunes later tonight.

So go ahead. Fangirl away. You know you want to. Just … be gentle, and remember this is a family-friendly blog!

intro03092009

  • Do we have a picture of Pete and his wife? And let me tell you folks, she’s even lovelier in person.
  • Any script, teleplay, or offspring generated while an employee of ‘The Colbert Report’ shall be the intellectual property of Stephen Colbert.
  • All perfectly legal as established in the landmark case Snooze v. Lose.
  • That’s why I soap my junk with a thick lather before I step in front of my shower cam.
  • For Some, Their Only Exercise
  • Way “Puckerbutt” LaPierre
  • There’s a reason we hide our guns. [Terms Of Parole]
  • The Love that Dare Not Shoot Its Name
  • Heisenberg’s Uncertainty Pistol
  • This is a skull from a teeny tiny cow. Those are the ones they make sliders out of.
  • For eruptions lasting over 4 hours, see your geologist.
  • No, no at this particular rate. Just look up “fastest animal”. Go to Wikipedia.
  • Does [Cheney] every come to their cars and do they feed him?
  • What about cougars? Because where I’m sitting, the cougar population of Wyoming is very healthy.
  • Why do you want to beat up old people? What was the appropriation? To keep people from beating up old people.
  • So you want us to beat up old people in a fiscally responsible way?
  • Would you care to judge some meats?
  • Actually, I’ve got something else that’s a chew toy, if you’re interested later.
  • I was searching for, let’s say, Sean Hannity singing folk songs.
  • It’s like seeing the Dramatic Chipmunk right in front of me.
  • Do you sew your own instruments?

Amazing show!!! I will definitely watch this episode several more times once it’s online. I also want to check out Lisa Hannigan’s music. She has such a beautiful voice!

I honestly don’t know what to vote for tonight. The introduction was fun. I love it when the show opens in such an unexpected way. The announcement about the birth of Abraham Carter Grosz was wonderful, too! Congratulations to the Grosz family! There was also the amazingly funny BKAD segment, the appearance by Sweetness the gun, and the great interview with and performance by Lisa Hannigan… I loved it all. How will I ever choose just one poll item?!

Wow, they’re really back on point again this week… also, 2009 has been so full of great shows so far. I constantly look forward to the next episode!

Even though the entire show was great, I had to vote for the Intro with the “Soap Opera Digest”… I mean, c’mon ladies, Stephen was in shorts and a friggin’ wife beater, for crying out loud! So deliciously hilarious! ;)

The segment about the Grosz baby was adorable, BKAD had me laughing non-stop with all of the Cougar jokes, seeing Sweetness is always great, and Lisa Hannigan has a great voice… reminded me a lot of Feist. Stephen must love indie/folk-ish music! :)

Great show tonight! Can’t wait to get screen caps from Colbertpics.com as well as watch the show over and over online!

That’s exactly what I said about Lisa too. She was fantastic.

“When I give you the bump, you’ll become HUGE.”

Wow. I never realized the sexual connotations of the term “Colbert Bump” until he said that to her!

Awesome show! I loved the intro, and the Wyoming BKAD was awesome! All the flirting with the congresswoman was just the funniest.

Lisa Hannigan has a cool voice and that was an amazing song. Congratulations to the Grosz family, and BKAD was so much fun!

I was in absolute Fangirl heaven last night. I can’t believe how strong the shows have been lately (not just TCR, but TDS too). TDS was on fire last night with the Jim Cramer thing. Who ever said that they couldn’t make it after Bush? They were grossly wrong, and speaking of gross, congrats to the Grosz family!

I am a big fan of Lisa Hannigan because of her work with Damien Rice, so she was a real treat. You can always tell when it’s going to be a BKAD segment because of the set-up after commercial, and I had already thought the show couldn’t get better after the Word and Sweetness. And of course especially after the incredible opening. There is no segment more consistently great than BKAD (except for maybe Cheating Death).

A continued thank you goes out to everyone who gets that show on the air every night. What would I do without it?

haha. I enjoyed that segue in your first paragraph. :D
Cheating Death is my favorite too!

Another wonderful show. I do love the Word, but ended up voting for BKAD. I’ll have to try to catch it again later, though, since I was trying to watch one half of the screen while my husband was playing a game on the other half. Perhaps not the best set-up to appreciate the Word, but I could still appreciate all the cougar jokes. The opening, the guest, the baby – all just great!

This show just flew by it was so engaging. I agree that Lisa Hannigan does sound a lot like Feist, she even looks a bit like her. I loved the sewed on album cover and that she was discovered by Stephen via youtube. I voted for the hilarious opener, I nearly did a spit take w/ my coffee.

First off, the intro was fantastic! But I had to put my vote in for BKAD. I was laughing non-stop during that. The faces Stephen makes are absolutely priceless. Such as the face he made when the congress woman said his children would eventually learn that Wyoming was the equality states and he was like, “Not from me.” And the faces he made with all the cougar jokes. Those jokes were too funny. I also love how Stephen called her out on and was right about the cheetah being the fastest animal. What a great episode, all-around!

I had to go with BKAD but the announcement of baby Grosz was so sweet. Congratulations Grosz family!

Not gonna lie, the opening segment caught me jaw-droppingly off guard but it was awesome!

I LOVE BKAD so I was so excited to see it on again, it’s always so hilarious.

I forgot Lisa Hannigan worked with Damien Rice who I used to LOVE years ago so I’m going to be checking her out a littl more.

There was a lot to like about this episode but I went with Lisa Hannigan’s performance. Her voice is so lovely and I listened to a few of her songs on her myspace page. It’s good chill-out music. I’m so getting that CD!

BKAD came in a close second due to the usual hilarity.

And congrats to the Grosz family! That was sweet to announce the birth on the show.

I thought Lisa Hannigan was great on the show. I remember her from when she used to sing with Damien Rice, and had been wondering where she escaped to. And how about that accordian she was jammin with!?
I did some research after the show:

excellent show!!!

I loved the intro although I couldn’t figure out what was going on until it was explained! the birth announcement was also great, and I extend my congratulations! grow up good kid! during the Word, I was worried about the guy sitting the next seat over whose pants were splattered with “blood.” if anything I guess it’s a keepsake?

I had to vote for BKAD though! the congresswoman was just fantastic in the answers (that they showed, anyway.) loved it.
the song was pretty fun too. I feel like it reminds me of other songs I know, but definitely in a good way. the instrumentation was nice, and I especially liked the trumpet.

I noticed a girl got splattered with blood last time, but this time the guy to the right was the audience coordinator who gives the “be an enthusiastic guest” speech at tapings, and the other guy I noticed was one of the people in the roller coaster picture with Stephen and Sweetness. Maybe they did that since the girl last time got “blood” on her pants, unless she was an intern or something.

Lame that I noticed that stuff, I know.

oh, I’d say that’s very astute of you. I should have figured they’d be careful about people’s clothing!

Actually, I recognized that guy. He’s not the audience coordinator. He’s an intern. I met him when I went to a taping in January. He was in charge of the general audience list. Nice guy!!!

Actually, Lisa Hannigan’s voice timbre/phrasing reminds me more of an older singer– Suzanne Vega…My Name is Luka, and Blood Makes Noise

Good show, lots of laffs. I never really thought of Colbert as cougar bait, but now that he mentions it… nice to see that he’s an equal opportunity flirt. lolol

And *of course* I loved the opening! =D

I told my friends that I would feel a lot better about myself if I owned a Brooks Brothers shirt (I didn’t tell them why). They remembered and bought me one for my birthday. I love friends.

hahah, that’s awesome! Every time I’m in the men’s department, I always look around to see if they have any Brooks Brothers ties in hopes that I would recognize some from the show. Alas, I have never seen them in a store. Not even the fancy schmancy ones!!

Loved Lisa Hannigan, the Word, Sweetness and BKAD (loved her Cougar callback!). Also, Stephen sans suit made my brain explode. :-D

And congrats to the Grosz family– I’m sure Abraham will be a great “Colbert” staffer! ;)

It was a close call between the Intro and the BKAD, but I had to surrender to the Intro because my inner fangirl knew that was the way to go:) However, I loved all the cougar references during the BKAD and the fact that the Congresswoman was willing to play along! Kudos to her! I loved Lisa Hannigan except for the big red mushroom which was charmingly whimsical but unfortunately distracting.

I voted for the intro–come on, Stephen in boxers! How could I not? But really the entire show was golden. The BKAD was excellent, at least what I heard of it. I was laughing so hard I think I missed quite a bit. I’ll have to watch it again later.

How many times has Tom Purcell been shot now– 4? 5? I’ve lost count. I loved the audience’s reaction when Stephen brought Sweetness out.

I was pleasantly surprised by Lisa Hannigan. I had never heard of her before, but I enjoyed her performance very much.

Finally, congratulations to the Grosz family! What a nice gesture, to announce the baby’s birth during the show. It feels like there’s a population explosion happening around me, because one of my cousins became a dad for the first time yesterday, and the sister of a good friend of mine had her first baby over the weekend. Thankfully, neither of those two new arrivals are now Stephen’s intellectual property.

Great Show! Lisa Hannigan has posted a little bit about being on TCR on her myspace blog – http://blogs.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=blog.view&friendId=35745431&blogId=475782997 :-)

I love how she equates her hat to “sweetness.” Haha! What an it-getter. She must have taken the picture in the mirror since “The Colbert Report” reads backwards.

I finally got a chance to watch! I am on a mini vacation right now and my DVR is waiting for me when I get home! [The crazy thing is--there is so much to catch up on here and on "The Report"! as I love both so much!]

I agree with all of the above congrats to the Grosz family, cougar flirting and lovely singing…the only thing I want to add is that I loved Stephen’s hair last night–it had that nice soft wave in it! *sigh!*

DB, did you just add that pic of Stephen in boxers?! I don’t recall that being there before!
