Klassic Kolbert: Stephen Colbert, Paul Dinello and Cagney in old WTTW Channel 11 video

Thanks to Zoner Conner who tipped me off to a video just recently posted on YouTube, featuring a VERY young Stephen Colbert, Paul Dinello and Paul’s dog Cagney in the park on a beautiful sunny day. This originally aired on WTTW Channel 11 Chicago in 1990. Stephen and Paul show up at the 0:46 mark. You’ll never guess what they’re thinking about while they sunbathe.

LOL! I love it. Thanks again! Actually, though, Stephen shows up at the 7 sec mark too .. heee :)

    Obviously scripted and hilarious.

I love that everyone else’s answer is kinda mundane and normal, but of course, they can’t give a mundane answer. Lol.

  6. Gaia Faye says:

Whoa. Was this his first ever TV appearance? lol

1990, almost twenty years ago. Man, it seems like just yesterday we weren’t even in the twenty-first century yet…

Those sunglasses need to come back in a BIG way.

Also: How badly do you want to see Character!Stephen try to explain was he was sunbathing with Tad thinking about leather masks?

    • Robotruth says:

WHY he was sunbathing with Tad…

How badly? Very badly. I see a Tip/Wag segment, perhaps.

And nice bit of yes . . . and-ing between Paul and Stephen there. Improv Chicago Style: Try to work in an S&M reference by the second beat.

Wow! What a surreal show! I think I’d steer clear of most of those characters, although the year 1990 makes it all the odder! Haha. I loved seeing Stephen and Paul. I’m afraid Stephen probably had rather pale skin like me and couldn’t stay in the sun too long:(I loved the guy who asked for a four-letter for woody pulp. I think he was serious, but it sounded wrong:P

What a fabulous find and kudos to the original YouTube poster who caught Stephen in this clip. Thanks also to Connner and DB!

Wouldn’t it be hilarious if they aired this on TCR? I guess it wouldn’t be the right venue, but oh well. I would love the see the outtakes from this segment! There’s a new archive called Chicago Film Archives which may have something. Who knows?!

OK, so I’m rambling on. My fanaticism is showing (blushing).

Oh wow, what a find! That’s really cool and random. They both look so cute!

  10. MaryLovesColbert says:

Oh my God!! Stephen is SO young! Ok, this is the crazy thing, though – I live in Chicago and I KNOW that dude who’s going around asking the questions. He’s always on PBS doing some stupid program like this! LOL. That is sooooo weird.

Anywho, what a great find! Absolutely adorable. Thanks for posting, DB! :D

  11. Tiger says:

that seemed like *such* a Colbert answer, but I couldn’t figure out why. so then I realized the syntax exactly matches the “mainly how gay it is” answer from the Prince Charles Scandal segment.

not that I expect this to be a great revelation for all. but the idea just kind of popped into my head and where else am I going to set it free?

    • wren says:

erm, I suspect you mean prosody, which is the rhythm & pitch of language. Syntax is word order. Just FYI, because I’m a language geek.

      • Tiger says:

I wasn’t even considering about that level of it, but you’re right! that why it must have struck me. I was just thinking it was cuz the words were the same.

and I had no idea a word existed for that. “prosody.” I’ve learned something new! :D

      • juice says:

So that’s what “prosody” means. Thanks, wren!

How random & adorable. I remember Wild Chicago. Other random thoughts: in 1990, he was only 26 years old (!), hadn’t even met Evie yet.

A friend recently sent me some home movies from 1989/1990 of us around town, at parties, making funny conversation at 2am outside an all night diner. I was spending a fair amount of time in the city then, come to think of it, with various friends on the fringes of the theater community there. Really entertaining (and a bit strange) to see video of myself from so long ago, especially when I’ve forgotten those moments entirely. Bet it would be fun for Stephen & Paul to see this :)

    • laughing at nothing says:

According to Evie McGee-Colbert’s Baristanet interview in 2006, she and Stephen met and began dating in May 1989. Stephen and Evie had been dating a year when this bit was filmed with Paul.

      • wren says:

Ah, good catch. I think I had 1990 in my head from an interview with his mom about the night they met at the party, so either his mom or I got the year wrong:). However, the Baristanet article also says they didn’t have their first date until December 1989 (as Stephen was on the way out of some other long term relationship when he first met Evie).

And I really really hope it doesn’t sound creepy that I know all this (or that you do, l@n). I just really like stories of how happy couples got together, so it sticks in my head.

After all, I’m half of a happy couple, and I like *our* story, too :)

        • laughing at nothing says:

The May 1989 date stuck in my head because that was an exciting and memorable spring. It was interesting to know that someone also remembered the specific time, for a completely different reason. :)

        • ColbertGirl27 says:

I love the story too. It’s just so sweet how they met and how they’ve been together since then. I have the Baristanet interview saved in my favorites:)

      • wren says:

Ah, I knew I’d seen 1990 before. Of course, I’ll take Evie’s word that it was 1989! Anyway, here’s the interview with his mom, which is pretty cute.
